Λκ 21:12 – 19

Lk. 21:12 – 19

The Lord said to his disciples, “Beware of men; for they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. This will be a time for you to bear testimony. Settle it therefore in your minds, not to meditate beforehand how to answer; for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and some of you they will put to death; you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.” [RSV]

Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. Your Cross, O Christ, we venerate, and Your holy Resurrection we praise and glorify. For You are our God; apart from You we know no other; we call upon Your name. Come, all faithful, let us venerate the holy Resurrection of Christ; for behold, through the Cross, joy has come to the whole world. Ever blessing the Lord, let us praise His Resurrection; for having endured the Cross for us, He destroyed death by death. [GOA]

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. Through your Orthodox manner did you defy * and lay low the deceit of impiety; * O Martyr, you trampled on the enemy’s arrogance. * For as you were internally on fire with godly zeal, * you extinguished idolatry’s ungodly insolence. * Therefore you have rightly been awarded the crown for * the tortures that you endured, * O victorious Martyr George. * And you therefore grant cures to all. * Intercede with Christ our God, * that He grant forgiveness of offenses * to those who with longing observe your holy memory.

The sound of the music called the peoples to worship the golden image of old. * The Servants, scions of David, sang * a song of Zion in defiance of the despicable decree of the tyrant, * and the flame in the furnace became for them dewy, as they sang the hymn, * “Exalted beyond measure are You, O God of our fathers. Blessed are You, our God!” [SD]

Glory to Your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

Today is the foremost -- yea the Mistress -- of feast days, * in splendor fitly arrayed; * today rejoicing and merriment * well befit the people of God; * for this, the Eighth of Days, * bears eternity’s image, * being figure and type of the age to come. * Brethren, let us cry to Him, * “God exalted over all, * You, our fathers’ God and ours, for evermore are blessed.” [TC]

Glory to Your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

Alone in his boldness, in his faithless believing * our benefactor and friend, * the daring Didymus dissipates * error’s gloomy ignorance quite * for all the ends of earth * by his trusting suspicion; * for himself, though, he weaves a celestial crown, * saying, “Jesus, You are Lord, * God exalted over all; * You, our fathers’ God and ours for evermore are blessed.” [TC]

Glory to Your holy Resurrection, O Lord.

Not idly did Thomas disbelieve Your arising, * nor did he fruitlessly doubt, * but boldly strove to substantiate * this incontrovertible truth * for every tribe on earth; * thus by doubting he proved Your Resurrection and taught all the world to cry, * singing, “Jesus, You are Lord, * God exalted over all; * You, our fathers’ God and ours, for evermore are blessed.” [TC]

Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to the abundance of His greatness. [SAAS]

Come all, having celebrated Christ’s * glorious and bright Resurrection, the joyous feast of feasts, * let us once again observe the sacred festival * of the glorious Martyr George, * and crown him with vernal * blossoms as is due to one who is invincible, * so that by his fervent entreaties * we might be absolved of transgressions * and also be delivered from adversities. [SD]

Praise Him with the sound of trumpet; praise Him with the harp and lyre. [SAAS]

As a whole burnt offering, O Saint, * animate and live, did you offer yourself entirely * and as an acceptable and most clean sacrifice, O all-blessed one, unto Him * who gave you His whole life. * Therefore you became an earnest intercessor for us, * rescuing all those who extol you * and with ardent faith call upon you * from the storms of life, all- holy Martyr George. [SD]

When you conscientiously had tilled * the seed of the word that was planted within your purest soul, * you increased it through the labors of your martyrdom. * Having wisely stowed it away * in heavenly storage, * blessed one, you therefore gained the undefiled reward. * Hence, now as you fully enjoy this, * by your intercessions with Christ God * save the lives of those who laud you faithfully. Martyr who received the prize from Christ, * by your intercessions preserve us who are diversely distressed; * rescue us from every dire and painful circumstance; * drive away terrible and soul–destroying depression. * Earnestly beseech that grace and mercy come to us, * so that being saved by your prayers * we might all rejoicingly honor * the contests you won by faith, O Martyr George. Spring is here: come, let us be merry. And Christ’s resurrection has shone brightly: come, let us be joyous. The memory of the prize-winning Martyr has come upon us, gladdening the faithful. Therefore, come all who are fond of feasts, let us celebrate it mystically. For as a good soldier, he stood up manfully against the tyrants and put them utterly to shame, and thus emulated the Passion of Christ the Savior. He had no mercy on the clay vessel of his own body, but rather taking it naked he reforged and exchanged it by means of tortures. Unto him let us cry aloud: O victorious Martyr, earnestly entreat for the salvation of our souls. [SD]

O Lord who loves humanity, great and incomparable is the abundance of Your compassion. You endured with such forbearance, as You were struck by Jews, as You were touched by Your Apostle, and as those who rejected You were obsessed with You. How did You become incarnate? How could You, the sinless One, be crucified? But we pray You give us the sense to join Thomas in saying to You, “My Lord and my God, glory to You!” [SD]

Holy Lord, who dwell in the highest and look upon the humble and observe all creation with Your all-seeing eye, to You we bow the neck of soul and body, and we pray You, Holy of holies: Extend Your invisible hand from Your holy heavens and bless us all. And as good and benevolent God, forgive us any misdeeds we committed voluntarily or involuntarily, and grant us Your blessings in this world and in the next.
