God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. [SAAS]

Στίχ. αʹ. Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ.

Verse 1: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

Στίχ. βʹ. Πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐκύκλωσάν με, καὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου ἠμυνάμην αὐτούς.

Verse 2: All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.

Στίχ. γʹ. Παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν.

Verse 3: And this came about from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes.

Στῦλος γέγονας ὀρθοδοξίας, θείοις δόγμασιν ὑποστηρίζων, τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν Ἱεράρχα Ἀθανάσιε· τῷ γὰρ Πατρὶ τὸν Υἱὸν ὁμοούσιον, ἀνακηρύξας κατῄσχυνας Ἄρειον· Πάτερ Ὅσιε, Χριστὸν τὸν Θεὸν ἱκέτευε, δωρήσασθαι ἡμῖν, τὸ μέγα ἔλεος.

You were Orthodoxy’s sturdy pillar; * you held up the Church with godly dogmas, * St. Athanasius, devout and great Hierarch. * For by preaching that the Son is homoousios * with the Father, you humiliated Arius. * Holy Father, pray to Christ our God fervently, * entreating Him to grant us His great mercy. [SD]

Ἐσφραγισμένου τοῦ μνήματος, ἡ ζωὴ ἐκ τάφου ἀνέτειλας Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός· καὶ τῶν θυρῶν κεκλεισμένων, τοῖς Μαθηταῖς ἐπέστης, ἡ πάντων ἀνάστασις· Πνεῦμα εὐθὲς διʼ αὐτῶν ἐγκαινίζων ἡμῖν, κατὰ τὸ μέγα σου ἔλεος.

The tomb being sealed, You rose from the sepulcher, O Christ God, the Life. And the doors being shut, You came to the disciples, O resurrection of all. Through them You renew a right spirit within us, according to Your great mercy. [GOASD]

Remembering our all-holy, immaculate, most blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

When you armed the Church with godly dogmas * that were Orthodox, O holy Father, * by your teachings you eradicated heresies. * Then you finished the race of true piety, * and like Paul the Apostle you kept the faith. * Henceforth the crown of righteousness is laid up for you as well, * for you labors, O all-blessed Athanasios. For fear of the Jews, the Disciples were in hiding,* having congregated in Zion. You came to them, O Good One,* the doors being shut, and You stood * among them, and You caused them to rejoice.* And You showed them the wounds on Your hands* and immaculate side, saying* unto the disbelieving Disciple,* “Put out your hand and examine Me,* for it is I, who for you became passible.” [SD]

You forever lead to light Orthodox Christians, * like a star that never sets, with your true dogmas’ shining light, * initiator in sacred things, * even since dying, O wise Athanasios. [SD]

The doors were shut and locked. You appeared to Your hiding * Disciples, as the Life, O my Christ, and You showed them * Your wounded side and hands and feet, * thus confirming Your resurrection* from the sepulcher. However Thomas was absent; * hence he said to them, “If I myself do not see Him, * I will not believe your words.” [SD]

Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. Your Cross, O Christ, we venerate, and Your holy Resurrection we praise and glorify. For You are our God; apart from You we know no other; we call upon Your name. Come, all faithful, let us venerate the holy Resurrection of Christ; for behold, through the Cross, joy has come to the whole world. Τῇ φιλοπράγμονι δεξιᾷ, τὴν ζωοπάροχόν σου πλευράν, ὁ Θωμᾶς ἐξηρεύνησε Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός· συγκεκλεισμένων γὰρ τῶν θυρῶν ὡς εἰσῆλθες, σὺν τοῖς λοιποῖς Ἀποστόλοις ἐβόα σοι· Κύριος ὑπάρχεις καὶ Θεός μου.

With his scrutinizing right hand, Thomas examined Your life-bestowing side, O Christ God. When You entered while the doors were shut, he cried out to You with the rest of the Apostles, “You are my Lord and my God.” [SD]

Ὀρθοδοξίας φυτεύσας τὰ δόγματα, κακοδοξίας ἀκάνθας ἐξέτεμες, καὶ τὸν τῆς πίστεως σπόρον ἐπλήθυνας, τῇ ἐπομβρίᾳ τοῦ Πνεύματος Ὅσιε· διὸ εὐφημοῦμεν τὴν μνήμην σου.

You planted the dogmas of Orthodoxy, * and you cut down the briars of heresy, * and thus you increased the seed of Faith, * with the rain of the Spirit, O holy one. * And therefore we hymn your memorial. [SD]

Ἀθανασίου τὴν πανέορτον μνήμην, ἐν ᾠδαῖς οἱ πιστοὶ ἀνευφημήσωμεν σήμερον· οὗτος γὰρ Ἄρειον τὸν πλάνον, καὶ Εὐνόμιον ἅμα σὺν Σαβελλίῳ, τοῖς τῆς ἀληθείας κατέβαλε δόγμασι, πυρὶ τῷ αἰωνίῳ παραδοὺς αὐτοὺς κατακαίεσθαι, ὡς βλασφημήσαντας ἄδικα κατὰ τῆς τοῦ Σωτῆρος σαρκώσεως, ἣν πάντες Προφῆται προκατήγγειλαν· διὸ εὐφημοῦμεν τὴν μνήμην αὐτοῦ.

Let us believers extol today the most festive memorial of Athanasios. He brought down the errant Arius, Eunomius and Sabellius, by means of true dogmas; and he delivered them to burn in everlasting fire, for they had wrongly blasphemed against the Savior’s incarnation, which all the Prophets had announced. Therefore we hymn his memorial. [SD]

Τῇ Βʹ τοῦ αὐτοῦ μηνός μνήμη τῆς ἀνακομιδῆς τοῦ λειψάνου τοῦ ἐν Ἁγίοις Πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἀθανασίου τοῦ Μεγάλου Πατριάρχου Ἀλεξανδρείας.

On May 2 we commemorate the recovery of the holy relics of our Father among the Saints Athanasius the Great, Patriarch of Alexandria.

Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ, μνήμη τῶν Ἁγίων Μαρτύρων Ἑσπέρου καὶ Ζωῆς τῆς συμβίου αὐτοῦ, καὶ τῶν τέκνων αὐτῶν Κυριακοῦ καὶ Θεοδούλου.

On this day we also commemorate the holy Martyrs Hesperos and his wife Zoe and their children Kyriacos and Theodulos.

Ὁ ὅσιος Ἰορδάνης ὁ θαυματουργὸς ἐν εἰρήνῃ τελειοῦται.

Arising at dawn very early, * instead of ointment, a hymn let us offer unto the Master, * and then we shall clearly see* Christ, the Sun of Righteousness, * causing true life to arise for all. [GOASD]

Κατῆλθες ἐν τοῖς κατωτάτοις τῆς γῆς, καὶ συνέτριψας μοχλοὺς αἰωνίους, κατόχους πεπεδημένων Χριστέ, καὶ τριήμερος, ὡς ἐκ κήτους Ἰωνᾶς, ἐξανέστης τοῦ τάφου.

You went down to the nether regions of earth, * and You broke apart the bars that forever * were closed on those who were held there, O Christ. * From the sepulcher, * as did Jonah from the whale, * You arose on the third day. [GOASD]

Ὁ Παῖδας ἐκ καμίνου ῥυσάμενος, γενόμενος ἄνθρωπος, πάσχει ὡς θνητός, καὶ διὰ πάθους τὸ θνητόν, ἀφθαρσίας ἐνδύει εὐπρέπειαν, ὁ μόνος εὐλογητὸς τῶν Πατέρων, Θεὸς καὶ ὑπερένδοξος.

The same One who delivered the Lads from fire, becoming a mortal man, * suffers in the flesh; and by His Passion He arrays * mortal nature with majesty, free of all * corruption, the only God of the fathers, * blessed and supremely glorious. [GOASD]

Αἰνοῦμεν, εὐλογοῦμεν καὶ προσκυνοῦμεν τὸν Κύριον.

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

Αὔτη ἡ κλητὴ καὶ ἁγία ἡμέρα, ἡ μία τῶν Σαββάτῳν, ἡ βασιλὶς καὶ κυρία, ἑορτῶν ἑορτή, καὶ πανήγυρίς ἐστι πανηγύρεων, ἐν ᾗ εὐλογοῦμεν Χριστὸν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.

This is it, the Day which is chosen and holy, * Day One of the Sabbaths. * It is the queen-day, the Lord’s Day, * and the Feast of all feasts, * and the Festival above every festival, * on which we extol Christ and bless Him to the ages. [GOASD]

Ὁ Ἀγγελος ἐβόα τῇ κεχαριτωμένῃ, Ἁγνὴ Παρθένε, χαῖρε, καὶ πάλιν ἐρῶ, χαῖρε, ὁ σὸς Υἱὸς ἀνέστη τριήμερος ἐκ τάφου.

The Angel cried aloud to the Lady full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin; and again I say Rejoice. Your Son has truly risen from the grave on the third day.

Young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord’s name, for His name alone is exalted.

His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people.

A hymn for all His saints, for the children of Israel, a people who draw near to Him.

Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His holy ones.

Εὐφρανθήτω Ἰσραὴλ ἐπὶ τῷ ποιήσαντι αὐτόν, καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Σιὼν ἀγαλλιάσθωσαν ἐπὶ τῷ βασιλεῖ αὐτῶν.

Let Israel be glad in Him who made him, and let the children of Zion greatly rejoice in their King.

Let them praise His name with dance; with tambourine and harp let them sing to Him.

For the Lord is pleased with His people, and He shall exalt the gentle with salvation.

The holy ones shall boast in glory, and they shall greatly rejoice on their beds.

Αἱ ὑψώσεις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῷ λάρυγγι αὐτῶν, καὶ ῥομφαῖαι δίστομοι ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν.

The high praise of God shall be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand.

Τοῦ ποιῆσαι ἐκδίκησιν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, ἐλεγμοὺς ἐν τοῖς λαοῖς.

To deal retribution to the nations, reproving among the peoples.

Τοῦ δῆσαι τοὺς βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν ἐν πέδαις καὶ τοὺς ἐνδόξους αὐτῶν ἐν χειροπέδαις σιδηραῖς.

To shackle their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.

Τοῦ ποιῆσαι ἐν αὐτοῖς κρῖμα ἔγγραπτον· δόξα αὕτη ἔσται πᾶσι τοῖς ὁσίοις αὐτοῦ.

To fulfill among them the written judgment: this glory have all His holy ones.

With sacred hymns let us extol that great glory of priests, Athanasius, the invincible hero. By the power of the Spirit, he cut down the ranks of the heresies, and he raised the trophies of Orthodoxy throughout the world. He correctly expounded on the mystery of the Trinity, speaking of three because of the attributes of each Person, and then speaking of one because of the unconfused identity of essence.
