Virgin Theotokos, we sing hymns extolling you, through whom came humanity’s salvation. For your Son and our God, who is benevolent, accepted the Passion and the crucifixion, in the flesh that He assumed from you, and thus from destruction He rescued us. [GOASD] |

Christ has been raised from the dead; He is the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. As the first-born of all creation and maker of all things that were made, in himself He renewed our human nature that had been ravaged. O Death, you no longer have dominion, for the Master of all has destroyed your power. [GOASD] |

You tasted death in the flesh, O Lord. But by Your resurrection, You cut off its bitterness and strengthened humanity against it, by reversing the failure that resulted in the ancient curse. O Defender of our life, glory to You, O Lord! [GOASD] |

You were so beautiful in your virginity. * Archangel Gabriel admired your purity, * which was resplendent; and amazed, he said to you, Theotokos, * “As there are no accolades that can worthily honor you, * I am at a loss for words to address you, so awed am I. * But I will say what I was commanded: * Rejoice, O favored Maiden full of grace!” [GOASD] |

You voluntarily endured Your suffering, * and Your divinity remained unchanged, O Lord. * Hades was terrified by this; and lamenting, it said to itself, * “I fear Him whose physical constitution is not destroyed. * I see the invisible One mystically waging war on me. * Now those whom I am holding are crying out, * ‘Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ!’” [GOASD] |

When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. [SD] |

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.” |

Very early in the morning, the myrrh-bearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, “The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.” |

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went out and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen. [RSV] |

Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. Your Cross, O Christ, we venerate, and Your holy Resurrection we praise and glorify. For You are our God; apart from You we know no other; we call upon Your name. Come, all faithful, let us venerate the holy Resurrection of Christ; for behold, through the Cross, joy has come to the whole world. Ever blessing the Lord, let us praise His Resurrection; for having endured the Cross for us, He destroyed death by death. [GOA] |

Mode 2. (or the Mode of the week) |
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. |
Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. |
For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. |
Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. |
For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. |
Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. |
You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. |
You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. |
Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. |
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. |
Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. |
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. |
I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. |
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. |
O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. |
For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. |
A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. |
Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. |
Then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings. |
Then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. And have mercy on me, O God. [SAAS] |

From the tomb You rose today, O Lord of tender compassion, also from the gates of death You led us out, O our Savior. On this day Adam is dancing and Eve rejoices, and with them the holy Patriarchs and the Prophets are unceasingly extolling the divine power of Your authority. [GOASD] |

Let heaven and earth join in dance today and in harmony extol Christ our God, for He raised the prisoners from their tombs. All creation celebrates together, offering worthy songs to our Redeemer, the Creator of all. For today, with himself as the Giver of Life, He raises people from the netherworld and lifts them up to heaven. He quashes the enemy’s haughtiness and smashes the gates of Hades, by the divine power of His authority. [GOASD] |

Adam was cast out from the delight of Paradise: ⁄ when he broke the commandment of the Master in uncontrolled desire, ⁄ his taking of food became bitter, ⁄ and he was condemned to work the earth ⁄ from which he himself was taken. ⁄ He ate his bread in toil and sweat: ⁄ therefore let us love abstinence, ⁄ that we may enter through the gate, ⁄⁄ and not weep as he did outside of Paradise. Let heaven and earth join in dance today and in harmony extol Christ our God, for He raised the prisoners from their tombs. All creation celebrates together, offering worthy songs to our Redeemer, the Creator of all. The holy Church of God exclaims befittingly, * “Christ is God and my Lord, and He is my strength.” * She is celebrating in the Lord and sings to Him * from a mind that has been purified. [GOASD] |

With Your divine light illumine souls, * who with yearning early in the morning rise to You, O good Lord, I pray, * so that they may know You, Word of God, as truly God, * who calls them back from darkness and from the night of sin. [GOASD] |

I see when my life becomes rough and stormy like the sea; * temptations feel like turbulence. * So I turn to the safe harbor of Your Church, * and calmly I pray to You: * Raise my life from corruption, very merciful Lord. [GOASD] |

In the furnace the Lord’s Angel saved the pious men, * blowing through it a dew-laden breeze, * while Chaldean men were completely burned, at God’s command, * persuading the tyrant to confess * and cry aloud, “O God of our fathers, blessed are You.” [GOASD] |
ᾨδὴ ηʹ. |
Ode viii. |
We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord. |
From the flame You refreshed pious Servants as with dew * and with water consumed the righteous Prophet’s sacrifice. * You accomplish all, O Christ, simply by willing it. * We exalt You beyond measure, unto all the ages. [GOASD] |

Amen. [RSV] |

O novel wonder, so befitting God! * For the Lord himself has manifestly passed through * the gate of the Virgin, which was shut. * Naked God, He entered, and He appeared wearing flesh when He exited, * the gate remaining shut notwithstanding. * We magnify her who is ineffably the Mother of God. |
Glory to You, our God, glory to You. |
When I took my fill of eating, ⁄ the taste of the fruit of knowledge in Eden seemed sweet, ⁄ but its end was gall. ⁄ Woe to you, wretched soul! ⁄ See how uncontrolled desire has made you an exile from Paradise! [OCA] |
Glory to You, our God, glory to You. |
God of all and Lord of mercy: ⁄ Look in compassion on my lowliness ⁄ and do not send me far away from Eden; ⁄ but may I see the glory from which I fell. [OCA] |
Glory. |
I weep, groan and lament ⁄ as I look upon the cherubim with the sword of flame ⁄ set to guard the gate of Eden against all transgressors. ⁄ Woe is me! I cannot enter, ⁄ unless You grant me freedom to approach, O Savior. [OCA] |

Virgin Theotokos, you did not know man. ⁄ You are the spiritual gate of life through which none may pass: ⁄ By your prayers, open to me the gates of Paradise that were closed long ago ⁄ that I may glorify you, ⁄ for after God, you are my helper and strong refuge! [OCA] |

Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with triumphant cymbals; let everything that breathes praise the Lord. [SAAS] |
“Woe is me!” cried Adam in lament, “that a serpent and a woman have deprived me of intimate communion with God; and eating from the tree has estranged me from the Paradise of delight. Woe is me, for I cannot bear the disgrace! Once the king of all God’s creatures on the earth, I am now viewed as a hostage because of one piece of illicit advice; and though once vested with the glory of immortality, I, as mortal, carry about the skin of deadness lamentably. Woe is me! Which lamentation shall I enlist to collaborate with me? But You, Friend of man, who fashioned me from the earth, and who donned compassion; recall me from servitude to the enemy and save me.” [GKD] |

The stadium of virtue is now open; those who wish to compete, enter therein, girded for the good contest of Lent, for those who compete according to the rules shall receive their laurels rightfully. Taking up the full armor of the Cross, let us do battle against the Enemy. As an impregnable wall, we have the Faith, prayer as our breastplate, and acts of mercy as our helmet. Instead of sword, there is fasting, which cuts every evil from the heart. He who does this shall attain a true crown from Christ, the King of all, on Judgment Day. [GKD] |

Adam was evicted from Paradise as one disobedient, after partaking of its luxury. Moses saw God, after cleansing the eyes of his soul by fasting. Hence if we desire to become residents of Paradise, let us divorce ourselves from baleful delights, and desiring to see God, as did Moses let us fast the Four Times Ten. By sincerely persevering in prayer and supplication, let us suppress the passions of our souls; let us avert the swellings of the flesh; thus lightened, let us set off on the journey to things above, where the choirs of angels in unbroken song sing praise to the undivided Trinity, to see the irresistible beauty of the Master. O Son of God and Giver of Life, we who set our hope on You entreat: Make us worthy of dancing with the armies of angels, O Christ, at the intercession of Your Mother, the Apostles, Martyrs and all the Saints. |
The time has come - the start of our spiritual contests, the victory over demons, the full armor of self-control, the angels’ dignity, the confidence before God. Thereby did Moses become conversant with the Creator, and heard the invisible voice. Lord, through fasting make us worthy to worship Your Passion and holy Resurrection, as You love humanity. [GKD] |

Again we pray for the blessed and ever-memorable founders of this holy church, and for all our fathers and brethren who have fallen asleep before us, who here have been piously laid to their rest, as well as the Orthodox everywhere. |
Again we pray for those who bear fruit and do good works in this holy and all-venerable church, for those who labor and those who sing, and for the people here present who await Your great and rich mercy. |
