For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less shall we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. His voice then shook the earth; but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven.” This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of what is shaken, as of what has been made, in order that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore I appeal to you, brethren, bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly. You should understand that our brother Timothy has been released, with whom I shall see you if he comes soon. Greet all your leaders and all the saints. Those who come from Italy send you greetings. On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it. And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he over turned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons; and he would not allow any one to carry anything through the temple. And he taught, and said to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.” And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and sought a way to destroy him; for they feared him, because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching. And when evening came he went out of the city. As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. And Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which you cursed has withered.” And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.” [RSV]

Brethren, he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, “I will proclaim your name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.” And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.” Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted. [RSV]

This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt have I called my son.” Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the magi, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the magi. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more.” But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” And he rose and took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, “He shall be called a Nazarene.” [RSV]

Τῇ ΚΘʹ τοῦ αὐτοῦ μηνὸς μνήμη τῶν Ἁγίων Νηπίων, τῶν ὑπὸ Ἡρῴδου ἀναιρεθέντων, χιλιάδων δεκατεσσάρων.	On December 29, we commemorate the Holy Innocents, the 14,000 infants slaughtered by Herod.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ μνήμη πάντων τῶν Χριστιανῶν, καὶ ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν, τῶν ἐν λιμῷ καὶ δίψῃ καὶ μαχαίρᾳ καὶ κρύει τελειωθέντων. Τελεῖται δὲ ἡ αὐτῶν Σύναξις ἐν τοῖς Χαλκοπρατείοις εἰς τὸν Ναὸν τῆς Ὑπεραγίας Θεοτόκου, ἔνθα ἡ ἁγία σορός.	On this day we also commemorate all our Christian brethren who have died by starvation and thirst, or by the sword, or from exposure. The Synaxis in their honor was held at the church of the Most-holy Theotokos in Chalcoprateia, where her holy shrine was.

Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ μνήμη τοῦ ὁσίου Πατρὸς ἡμῶν Θαδδαίου τοῦ Ὁμολογητοῦ.	On this day we also commemorate our devout father Thaddaeus the Confessor.
Μνήμη τοῦ ὁσίου Πατρὸς ἡμῶν Γεωργίου, Ἐπισκόπου Νικομηδείας, τοῦ ποιητοῦ ᾀσματικῶν τινων Κανόνων καὶ Τροπαρίων.	We also commemorate our devout father George, Bishop of Nicomedia, the composer of various hymnographic Canons and Troparia.
Καὶ τὰ Ἐγκαίνια τοῦ Ναοῦ τῶν ἁγίων μʹ Μαρτύρων, πλησίον τοῦ Χαλκοῦ Τετραπύλου.	We also commemorate the Consecration of the Church of the Forty Martyrs, near the Bronze Tetrapylon.
