In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Μακάριοι οἱ πενθοῦντες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ παρακληθήσονται.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Τὴν φωνήν σοι προσάγομεν, τοῦ Λῃστοῦ, καὶ βοῶμέν σοι· Μνήσθητι ἡμῶν Σωτήρ, ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ σου.

We present You the robber’s words and we prayerfully echo them; and like him we cry out, O Savior: In Your kingdom remember us. [SD]

Μακάριοι οἱ καθαροὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ, ὅτι αὐτοὶ τὸν Θεὸν ὄψονται.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [RSV]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

Lord, we honor Your burial and Your rising, by which You freed * the world from corruption, O God, in Your benevolence. [SD]

We salute you and say, Rejoice, fiery throne and unwedded Bride. Rejoice, holy Virgin, for you gave birth to God for humanity. [SD]

Σπλάγχνων Ἰωνᾶν.

Μακάριοι ἐστὲ ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς, καὶ διώξωσι, καὶ εἴπωσι πᾶν πονηρὸν ῥῆμα καθʼ ὑμῶν, ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Νέος Ἀβραάμ, ἐδείχθης Νικόλαε, ὡς μονογενῆ υἱὸν προσάξας τὸν νοῦν, τῷ Δεσπότῃ σου, ἀναιμάκτους θυσίας προσφέρων ἀεί, κἀντεῦθεν εὐλογήθης ὡς φιλόξενος, Πάτερ, καὶ Τριάδος γέγονας, οἰκητήριον θεῖον καὶ ἄμωμον.

Holy Nicholas, you are revealed as a new Abraham, ⁄ for you brought your mind to your Master ⁄ as an only-begotten son for sacrifice, ⁄ continually offering a bloodless holocaust. ⁄ And as Abraham, you were blessed for your hospitality, ⁄ becoming the divine dwelling of the Holy Trinity, ⁄⁄ all-immaculate Father! Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Nicholas, you have wrought strange and fearful wonders ⁄ throughout the world and far off upon the sea, ⁄ protecting those in danger with your swift prayers, ⁄ healing the sick and feeding the poor! ⁄ You were a worthy bearer of your name, ⁄⁄ showing the holy people to be victorious against their enemies! Prophesying clearly with the eye of your mind, ⁄ you filled the world with true doctrine. ⁄ You proclaimed to us that the Son is of one essence with the Father; ⁄ you utterly destroyed the folly of Arius, ⁄⁄ as a pillar of the Church, laying down your own perfect teachings. [OCA]

Κλίνας οὐρανούς, ἐν μήτρᾳ σου Πάναγνε, Χριστὸς βουληθείς, ὅλος ἐσκήνωσεν· οὐ γὰρ ἔφερε, τῶν ἰδίων χειρῶν τὸ πλαστούργημα, καθορᾶν ὑπὸ τοῦ πλάνου τυραννούμενον, ἦλθε δὲ ἐν δούλου σχήματι, τὸ ἀνθρώπινον γένος λυτρώσασθαι.

Christ bowed the heavens by His Own will, ⁄ and came to dwell entirely in your womb, all-holy Virgin! ⁄ For He could not bear to look upon the work of His Own hands ⁄ held under the rule of the deceiver. ⁄⁄ Therefore He came in the form of a Servant to save mankind. [OCA]

Ὅτε κατῆλθες πρὸς τὸν θάνατον, ἡ ζωὴ ἡ ἀθάνατος, τότε τὸν ᾅδην ἐνέκρωσας, τῇ ἀστραπῇ τῆς θεότητος· ὅτε δὲ καὶ τοὺς τεθνεῶτας, ἐκ τῶν καταχθονίων ἀνέστησας, πᾶσαι αἱ δυνάμεις τῶν ἐπουρανίων ἐκραύγαζον· Ζωοδότα Χριστέ, ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν δόξα σοι.

When You descended unto Death, O Lord, You who are immortal Life put Hades to death, by the lightning of Your divinity. And when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the hosts of heaven sang aloud to You, “O Christ God, Giver of life, glory to You!” [GOASD]

A rule of faith are you, and an icon of gentleness, and a teacher of self-control. And to your flock this was evident, by the truth of your life and deeds. You were humble and therefore you acquired exalted gifts, treasure in heaven for being poor. O Father and Hierarch St. Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, and entreat Him to save our souls. [SD]

Ἡ Παρθένος σήμερον, τὸν προαιώνιον Λόγον, ἐν Σπηλαίῳ ἔρχεται, ἀποτεκεῖν ἀποῤῥήτως. Χόρευε, ἡ οἰκουμένη ἀκουτισθεῖσα, δόξασον, μετὰ Ἀγγέλων καὶ τῶν Ποιμένων, βουληθέντα ἐποφθῆναι, Παιδίον νέον, τὸν πρὸ αἰώνων Θεόν.

On this day the Virgin Maid * goes to the grotto to give birth * to the pre-eternal Word * in an ineffable manner. * Dance for joy, all the inhabited earth, on hearing. * Glorify along with Angels and with the shepherds * Him who willed that He appear as * a newborn Child, * the pre-eternal God. I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you the sooner. At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.” And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.” Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?” As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him. Ὕμνος εἰς τὴν Θεοτόκον.

Hymn to the Theotokos.

Ἄξιόν ἐστιν ὡς ἀληθῶς μακαρίζειν σε τὴν Θεοτόκον, τὴν ἀειμακάριστον καὶ παναμώμητον καὶ μητέρα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Τὴν τιμιωτέραν τῶν Χερουβεὶμ καὶ ἐνδοξοτέραν ἀσυγκρίτως τῶν Σεραφείμ, τὴν ἀδιαφθόρως Θεὸν Λόγον τεκοῦσαν, τὴν ὄντως Θεοτόκον, σὲ μεγαλύνομεν.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

May He who rose from the dead, Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, our Father among the Saints Nicholas the Wonder-worker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, whose memory we celebrate; and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.

Κατάλυσις ἰχθύος.

Fish: fish, oil and wine are allowed. Refrain from meat, dairy and eggs.

Εἶναι ἡ νηστεία πρὸ τῶν Χριστουγέννων.
