The Isle of Evia today rejoices, * for it has you as its new protector. * And the holy monastery of St. David is glad, * for it possesses your tomb, O Iakovos, * our holy father. And filled with grace of God, * like a channel of the Spirit that is unstoppable, * you pour out gifts of grace every day for us. [SD] |

Today is the prelude of God’s good pleasure, and the proclamation of humanity’s salvation. In the temple of God, the Virgin is presented openly, and in herself she announces Christ to all. Let us, then, with a great voice cry aloud to her: “Rejoice, you are the fulfillment of the Creator’s dispensation.” [SD] |

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.” |

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went out and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen. [RSV] |

We fans of the saints now venerate the tomb of devout * Iakovos, the new and wonderful ascetic and Saint, * extolling him worthily. * For from his early childhood he had truly devoted * himself as a precious gift to Christ the Lord and Master, * becoming for the faithful a teacher inspired by God. |
Shout, O David, and declare: * What is this present feast? * Here is she, whom you extolled * in the inspired book of Psalms, * as a daughter and child of God and Virgin, * saying that virgins shall be brought * to the King mystically, * her neighbors shall be led * with joy and gladness to Him. * Now with your words add to the splendor of this feast day, * which is observed throughout the world by those who cry: * The Theotokos, who brought salvation, * has come to us in the Temple. Wanting the nations to be assured * that they could have salvation, the Lord chose one * unwedded who belonged * to the poor race of humanity * to signify renewal, and reconcile us all. [RB] |

You are a dwelling for God’s good grace, * O undefiled Lady, a treasure house * that stores mercy divine, * and that is most inexpressible. * Now you share in the temple’s joy, boundless for all time. [RB] |

Anna cries out on this day as she leads * the all-pure Temple to the house * of God, and she says most faithfully to the priest: * “This child giv’n to me by God receive from me, * lead her now into the Temple of the Maker of all things and sing * to him with joy and cry out with a loud voice: * O all you works of the Lord, bless the Lord your God!” [RB] |

When he saw Anna with Spirit well-filled, * priest Zachariah said to her: * “You bring to us the true Mother of Life, the one * whom prophets of God have called the Mother of God. * And how shall the Temple hold her in its walls? I am now stricken with awe. I sing with wonder and shout with a loud voice: * O all you works of the Lord, bless the Lord your God!” [RB] |

Anna replied to him with a clear voice: * “I stand, beseeching the true God; * I call on him with my faith and my fervent pray’r * to take now the fruit of my travail joyfully. * I vowed after birth I would give her to him who gave her to me. * So therefore, joyfully leaping, I cry out: * O all you works of the Lord, bless the Lord your God!” [RB] |

The heavens were astounded because of this, * and the ends of the earth were astonished, because God himself * bodily appeared to the human race, * O Theotokos, coming forth * from your virgin womb, which indeed became * more spacious than the heavens. * And therefore by the orders * of men and angels you are magnified. You are, O Word of God, simple in divine, * unoriginate nature, and now composite in the flesh, * which You have assumed and have made Your own. * You suffered as a man, and yet * You remained without suffering as God. * We therefore magnify You * in two distinctive natures, * without dividing or confusing them. O pure Mother of God, since you have * the beauty of your soul clear and resplendent, * and since you are full of the Grace of God from heaven, * you ever illumine with eternal light * those who cry aloud with a glad heart: * You, O pure and virgin Maiden, are truly superior to all. [SD] |
When they saw the Entry of the all-pure one the Angels were astonished how paradoxically she entered into the Holy of Holies. |

Soaring higher than the power of speech * is your miracle, O pure Theotokos. * For beyond all reason I perceive in you a body * that in no way admitted the flow of sin. * Therefore with thanksgiving I cry out: * You, O pure and virgin Maiden, are truly superior to all. [SD] |

Paradoxally the Law prefigured you, * O pure one, as a jar and tabernacle, * spiritual ark and rod of Aaron and the curtain, * indestructible Temple and the gate of God. * Thus it teaches us all to cry out: * You, O pure and virgin Maiden, are truly superior to all. [SD] |

Let no one doubt or disbelieve * that Christ has truly risen. * For first to Mary Magdalene * He appeared, then to others, * as they walked into the country, * later, to the eleven * disciples, as they ate a meal. * He sent them out to baptize throughout the world. * Then He ascended into heaven, from which * He had come down. And He confirmed * by many signs the message. [GOASD] |

When Mary Magdalene brought the good news, that You, the Savior, had risen from the dead, and had appeared to her, the disciples did not believe her. So You upbraided them for their hardness of heart. But once they were fully equipped with the signs and miracles, You sent them out to preach the gospel. Then You, O Lord, were taken up to Your Father, the Source of Light; and they went forth and preached everywhere, and the message was confirmed by the miracles. And now we, who through them have been enlightened, glorify Your resurrection from the dead, O benevolent Lord. [GOASD] |
