For the Martyrs.

Mode pl. 2. When the angelic powers.

Ἀγγελικαὶ Δυνάμεις.

The martyr athletes offered resistance in the ring, * contesting for the faith, and the tyrants tortured them. * The hosts of Incorporeals observed and were holding the victory medals. * The truly wise contestants amazed the tyrants and kings. * They overturned the devil by their confession of Christ. * O Lord, who strengthened them, glory to You. [SD]

Verse: God is wondrous in His saints. [SAAS]

The holy athletes endured the contest, and they received from You the medals of victory. They destroyed the machinations of the lawless, and they received the crowns of incorruption. Through them, O God, save our souls. [SD]

Verse: To the saints on His earth, in them He magnified all His will. [SAAS]

O Lord, the memory of Your Saints is like the Garden of Eden, for all creation greatly rejoices in it. Grant us peace and great mercy, by their intercessions. [SD]

O Lord, who called the blessed Maid Your Mother, You came to the Passion of Your own will and intent. Adam You wished to seek; You therefore shone upon the Cross, saying to the Angels, “Rejoice with me together, for I have found the coin that was lost.” O Lord, You have disposed all things wisely. Light always dawns for the righteous. The saints were illumined in You, and they shine like stars forever, and they extinguish the lamp of the impious. By their prayers, You will light my lamp, O Lord, and save me. [SD]

Everything is truly vanity, and earthly life is a shadow and a dream. Every man stirs himself up in vain, as the Scripture says. Once we gain the world, then we attain the grave, where kings and poor dwell together. Therefore, O Christ God, grant rest to those who have passed away, since You are benevolent. [SD]

Ἐλπὶς τοῦ κόσμου ἀγαθή.

You are for us who are on earth * a powerful protection, * as the one who in time gave birth * in the flesh to the timeless * Son and Logos of God, O Mary Mother of God. * Now as His Mother pray * to Him in earnest with the saints, * the Martyrs and the Prophets * and the ascetic Saints, * to save those who have departed. Saint Philip, Your disciple and Your friend and imitator of Your Passion, proclaimed to the whole world that You are God. At his earnest entreaties, keep Your Church from assaults of lawless enemies, through the Theotokos, O Lord abundantly merciful. [SD]

Give me a river of speech, O Lord, who made the nature of water. Steady my heart, O Master, who established the earth by Your word. And illumine my mind, You who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, so that I may say what is fitting, and worthily extol your Disciple, O Lord abundantly merciful. [SD]

From the Menaion.

On November 14, we commemorate the holy, glorious and all-lauded Apostle Philip, one of the first group of Twelve.

On this day we also commemorate our father among the saints Gregory Palamas, the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Thessaloniki, who flourished around 1340.

On this day the holy Neo-martyr Constantine, who was born in Hydra, but witnesed in Rhodes in the year 1800, died by hanging.

By their holy intercessions, O God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Your cheeks were like bowls of sweet beverage in the world, O wise Apostle Philip. To the faithful they offered the life-giving drink. You had the active life as an entry to contemplation, and you became a follower of Christ. By your teachings, you adorned the barren and childless Church of the Gentiles, which in Christ has produced many offspring. Pray now for that Church to be delivered from distress and need. For you are able to do much, since you are near to God. [SD]
