In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [RSV]

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. [RSV]

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. [RSV]

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. [RSV]

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. [RSV]

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [RSV]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

Adam fell by a tree, and he was evicted from Paradise. * By the tree of the Cross the Robber gained entrance to Paradise. * The former, by tasting fruit, disobeyed his Maker’s commandment not to eat. * The latter was crucified with Him, whom though hidden he confessed to be God. * Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior. [SD]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

O compassionate Christ, * You accepted Peter who wept in grief; * You received the harlot’s tears, * and You granted mercy to the Publican, * O God, when he merely sighed. * O Word most benevolent, now I entreat and pray * that You in Your tender love will grant me forgiveness of all my trespasses, * and rescue me from the fire * of perdition, O gracious Lord. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Holy Forerunner, you broke * the bonds of your mother’s infertility. * I entreat you now to break * the infertility of my humble heart, * and pray for me so that I may bring forth the good fruits of virtuous deeds, * through which I may also attain everlasting life, and cry aloud to Christ, * “Remember me as well in Your kingdom, O Savior.” [SD]

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

For the Martyrs.

You were brutally condemned * to submit to torture and punishment: * you were flayed, you were crushed, * you were given over to wild beasts; * your bodies were cut apart; * you were burnt in fire, you were thrown into the sea, * O Martyrs, and you did not renounce Christ our God. Now entreat Him that peace, * enlightenment, and His great mercy be granted us. [SD]

Glory.

Having purified our minds, * let us cry aloud to the Trinity: * “Father, only-begotten Son, * and Holy Spirit, in honor equal to them, * preserve us Your servants who with genuine love worship You our only God * in single Divinity, Kingdom, Rule and glory, as we cry out and say: * Remember me as well in Your heavenly kingdom.” [SD]

You received Him in your womb, * in a way surpassing both thought and speech, * and you carried Him to term, * who with the Father is unoriginate, * and with the Holy Spirit shares the throne, and became man to benefit mankind, * O Mary the Bride of God, He made you a spacious receptacle of God. * Now earnestly pray to Him to save us your servants. Come, let us worship and bow down before Christ. Save us, O Son of God, who are wondrous in the saints. We sing to You, Alleluia.

Apolytikion. For the Martyr.

Mode 4. Come quickly.

Your Martyr, O Lord, was worthily awarded by You * the crown of incorruption, in that he contested for You our immortal God. * Since he possessed Your power, he defeated the tyrants, * dashing the demons’ powerless displays of defiance. * O Christ God, at his fervent entreaties, save our souls. [SD]

The Apolytikion of the parish church is sung. Then:

Kontakion. Mode 2.

O Protection of Christians that never falls, intercession with the Creator that never fails, we sinners beg you, do not ignore the voices of our prayers. O good Lady, we implore you, quickly come unto our aid, when we cry out to you with faith. Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who protect now and ever those who honor you. [SD]

Trisagios Hymn

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

The Epistle

Tuesday of the 22nd Week

The reading is from Paul’s Letter to the Colossians.

Col. 2:20 – 23; 3:1 – 3

Brethren, if with Christ you died to the elemental principles of the world, why do you live as if you still belonged to the world? Why do you submit to regulations, “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” (referring to things which all perish as they are used), according to human precepts and doctrines? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting rigor of devotion and self-abasement and severity to the body, but not honor, in checking the indulgence of the flesh. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hid with Christ in God. [RSV]

The Gospel

Tuesday of the 6th Week of Luke

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

Lk. 11:1 – 10

At that time, Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us each day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’” And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything’? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

Glory to You, our God, glory to You.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
