In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Μνήσθητί μου, ὁ Θεὸς ὁ Σωτήρ μου, ὅταν ἔλθῃς ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ σου, καὶ σῶσόν με, ὡς μόνος φιλάνθρωπος.

Like the robber I entreat You, O my Savior, * when You come in Your kingdom, remember me, * O Lord, and save me, O only benevolent God. [SD]

Μακάριοι οἱ καθαροὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ, ὅτι αὐτοὶ τὸν Θεὸν ὄψονται.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [RSV]

Διὰ ξύλου, τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἀπατηθέντα, διὰ ξύλου Σταυροῦ πάλιν ἔσωσας, Λῃστὴν βοῶντα· Μνήσθητί μου, Κύριε, ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου.

Through a tree was Adam tricked, but You saved him * through a tree, and You saved the robber as well * who cried to You, Lord: In Your kingdom remember me. [SD]

Μακάριοι οἱ εἰρηνοποιοί, ὅτι αὐτοὶ Υἱοὶ Θεοῦ κληθήσονται.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

ᾍδου πύλας, καὶ μοχλοὺς συντρίψας Ζωοδότα, νεκροὺς ἀνέστησας ἅπαντας, Σωτὴρ βοῶντας· Δόξα τῇ ἐγέρσει σου.

After smashing Hades’ bars and gates, O Savior, * as the Giver of life You raised all the dead, * who shouted: Glory to Your resurrection, O Lord. [SD]

Μακάριοι οἱ δεδιωγμένοι ἕνεκεν δικαιοσύνης, ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ Βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

Ἡ ἀῤῥήτως, ἐπʼ ἐσχάτων συλλαβοῦσα, καὶ τεκοῦσα τὸν Κτίστην τὸν ἴδιον, Παρθένε σῷζε, τοὺς σὲ μεγαλύνοντας.

In the latter days, ineffably conceiving, * you gave birth to the Lord who created you. * O Virgin, save us who magnify you in song. [SD]

Μακάριοι ἐστὲ ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς, καὶ διώξωσι, καὶ εἴπωσι πᾶν πονηρὸν ῥῆμα καθʼ ὑμῶν, ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Τοῦ κάλλους, ὁ Βασιλεὺς Χριστὸς ἐπεθύμησε, νῦν τῆς σεπτῆς Ἐκκλησίας, καὶ ἐθνῶν μητέρα ἀπέδειξεν, ἐκ δουλείας, υἱοθετουμένων διὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος.

Christ the King as Lord has now desired the beauty of the holy Church that He founded. * He has made her mother of all the nations * He adopted by the Spirit and rescued from slavery. [GOASD]

Χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὅτι ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Φρίττουσι, τῶν δυσμενῶν δαιμόνων αἱ φάλαγγες, τὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ Ἐκκλησίαν, τοῦ Σταυροῦ τῷ τύπῳ σημειουμένην, καὶ σκιάζει, ἁγιαστικὴ τοῦ Πνεύματος ἔλλαμψις.

Battalions of wicked demons shudder before the Church of Christ and fearfully tremble, * for the holy sign of the Cross is marked there; * and the Spirit’s illumination covers and hallows it. [GOASD]

Οὐ ψάμμον, ἀλλὰ Χριστὸν θεμέλιον ἔχουσα, ἡ ἐξ ἐθνῶν Ἐκκλησία, στεφανοῦται κάλλει τῷ ἀπροσίτῳ, καὶ διαδήματι, τῆς βασιλείας ἐγκαλλωπίζεται.

Having her foundation not on sand but the rock of Christ, the holy Church of the Gentiles * is adorned with unapproachable beauty, * with the symbols of the eternal kingdom bedecking her. [GOASD]

Ὢ θαῦμα, τῶν ἁπάντων θαυμάτων καινότερον! ὅτι Παρθένος ἐν μήτρᾳ, τὸν τὰ σύμπαντα περιέποντα, ἀπειράνδρως συλλαβοῦσα, οὐκ ἐστενοχώρησεν.

O miracle, more novel than all other miracles! * Behold, without man a Virgin * in her body conceived the One who holds * in His hands the universe, and He was not confined by her. [SD]

Τὸν ζωοποιὸν Σταυρὸν τῆς σῆς ἀγαθότητος, ὃν ἐδωρήσω ἡμῖν τοῖς ἀναξίοις Κύριε, σοὶ προσάγομεν εἰς πρεσβείαν. Σῷζε τοὺς βασιλεῖς καὶ τὴν πόλιν σου, εἰρηνεύοντας διὰ τῆς Θεοτόκου, μόνε φιλάνθρωπε.

O benevolent Lord, as an intercessor we we present to You the life-giving Cross of Your goodness, which we the unworthy have as a gift from You. Save our leaders and our nation and keep them in peace, through the Theotokos. [SD]

Ὡς τοῦ ἄνω στερεώματος τὴν εὐπρέπειαν καὶ τὴν κάτω συναπέδειξας ὡραιότητα, τοῦ ἁγίου σκηνώματος τῆς δόξης σου Κύριε. Κραταίωσον αὐτὸ εἰς αἰῶνα αἰῶνος, καὶ πρόσδεξαι ἡμῶν, τὰς ἐν αὐτῷ ἀπαύστως προσαγομένας σοι δεήσεις, πρεσβείαις τῆς Θεοτόκου, ἡ πάντων ζωὴ καὶ ἀνάστασις.

You have made the earthly beauty of the holy tabernacle of Your glory to be like the majesty of the firmament on high, O Lord. Make it strong forever and ever, and accept our supplications that we unceasingly bring to You there, at the intercession of the Theotokos. For You are the life and resurrection of all. [SD]

Οὐρανὸς πολύφωτος ἡ Ἐκκλησία, ἀνεδείχθη ἅπαντας, φωταγωγοῦσα τοὺς πιστούς· ἐν ᾧ ἑστῶτες κραυγάζομεν· Τοῦτον τὸν οἶκον στερέωσον Κύριε.

Lord, Your Church appears to us * to be like heaven * full of light, and guides with light * all who believe in You, O Christ. * And we who stand in it cry to You: * Savior, establish forever this holy house. [SD]

But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Sunday Before the Elevation of the Cross

Ἐκ τοῦ κατὰ Ἰωάννην ἁγίου Εὐαγγελίου τὸ ἀνάγνωσμα.

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to John.

The Lord said, “No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

Ἄξιόν ἐστιν ὡς ἀληθῶς μακαρίζειν σε τὴν Θεοτόκον, τὴν ἀειμακάριστον καὶ παναμώμητον καὶ μητέρα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Τὴν τιμιωτέραν τῶν Χερουβεὶμ καὶ ἐνδοξοτέραν ἀσυγκρίτως τῶν Σεραφείμ, τὴν ἀδιαφθόρως Θεὸν Λόγον τεκοῦσαν, τὴν ὄντως Θεοτόκον, σὲ μεγαλύνομεν.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Εἴδομεν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν, ἐλάβομεν Πνεῦμα ἐπουράνιον, εὕρομεν πίστιν ἀληθῆ, ἀδιαίρετον Τριάδα προσκυνοῦντες· αὕτη γὰρ ἡμᾶς ἔσωσεν.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.
