When he took down Your immaculate Body from the Cross, the honorable Joseph wrapped it in a clean linen shroud with spices and laid it for burial in a new tomb. But on the third day You rose, O Lord, and granted to the world the great mercy. [GOASD]

You were Orthodoxy’s sturdy pillar; * you held up the Church with godly dogmas, * St. Athanasius, devout and great Hierarch. * For by preaching that the Son is homoousios * with the Father, you humiliated Arius. * Holy Father, pray to Christ our God fervently, * entreating Him to grant us His great mercy. Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. Your Cross, O Christ, we venerate, and Your holy Resurrection we praise and glorify. For You are our God; apart from You we know no other; we call upon Your name. Come, all faithful, let us venerate the holy Resurrection of Christ; for behold, through the Cross, joy has come to the whole world. Mode 2.

In saying Rejoice to the myrrh-bearers, You allayed the lament of the first mother Eve, at Your Resurrection, O Christ our God. And You ordered Your Apostles to proclaim, * “The Savior has risen from the sepulcher.” [SD]

Oikos.

O Savior, as the myrrh-bearing women were on their way to Your sepulcher, they mentally wondered to themselves and said, “Who will roll the stone away from the tomb for us?” And looking up, they see that the stone has been rolled away. They were amazed by the look of the Angel and his robe. Trembling came upon them, and they considered fleeing. Then the young man said to them, “Do not you be afraid. The One you seek has risen. Come, see the place where the body of Jesus lay. Then go quickly and tell the Disciples, * ‘The Savior has risen from the sepulcher.’” [SD]

Mode 2. In the pools of your blood.

Τοῖς τῶν αἱμάτων σου.

You planted the dogmas of Orthodoxy, * and you cut down the briars of heresy, * and thus you increased the seed of Faith, * with the rain of the Spirit, O holy one. * And therefore we hymn your memorial. [SD]

Oikos.

Let us believers extol today the most festive memorial of Athanasios. He brought down the errant Arius, Eunomius and Sabellius, by means of true dogmas; and he delivered them to burn in everlasting fire, for they had wrongly blasphemed against the Savior’s incarnation, which all the Prophets had announced. Therefore we hymn his memorial. [SD]

On May 2 we commemorate the recovery of the holy relics of our Father among the Saints Athanasius the Great, Patriarch of Alexandria.

On this day we also commemorate the holy Martyrs Hesperos and his wife Zoe and their children Kyriacos and Theodulos.

Devout Saint Jordan the Wonder-worker reposed in peace.

By their holy intercessions, O Christ God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Ode i. Mode 1.

Resurrection Day! O peoples, let us brilliantly shine! * Pascha, the Lord’s Pascha! * For Christ our God has out of death * passed us over into life, * and likewise from earth * to heaven, as we now sing * unto Him a triumphal hymn. [GOASD]

Ode iii.

Come and let us drink a new drink, * not one marvelously issuing from a barren rock, * but one that Christ from the tomb * pours out, incorruption’s very source. * For we are established in Him. [GOASD]

Now let Habakkuk as a God-inspired prophet stand with us, * keeping his divine watch, and show us * the angelic messenger, who, shining, utters glowingly, * “Today, for the world is salvation,* because arisen is Christ, being omnipotent.” [GOASD]

Arising at dawn very early, * instead of ointment, a hymn let us offer unto the Master, * and then we shall clearly see* Christ, the Sun of Righteousness, * causing true life to arise for all. [GOASD]

To fulfill among them the written judgment: this glory have all His holy ones. [SAAS]

Let the Jewish leaders explain it. How did the soldiers lose the King, whom they were guarding? Why couldn’t the stone secure the rock of life? Either produce Him who was buried, or else worship Him as risen from the dead, then join us and say, “Glory to the abundance of Your tender mercies, our Savior, glory to You!” [GOASD]

By your fiery dogmas is * all the tinder of heresy * utterly consumed, O all-glorious and wise. * The insubordinate army of the heretics founders in * your profundity of thought, * O devout Athanasios; and from day to day * the assembly of faithful prides itself in your theology and doctrines, * and with a loud voice it honors you. [SD]

Praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with strings and flute. [SAAS]

O devout Athanasios, by the splendor of your divine * discourses the whole Church is nobly beautified; * and she adorns herself piously with beautiful ornaments; * and she dutifully keeps * your most festive memorial, and she honors you, * the illustrious glory of the priesthood and the universal preacher * in the defense of the Trinity. Mode 3.

With sacred hymns let us extol that great glory of priests, Athanasius, the invincible hero. By the power of the Spirit, he cut down the ranks of the heresies, and he raised the trophies of Orthodoxy throughout the world. He correctly expounded on the mystery of the Trinity, speaking of three because of the attributes of each Person, and then speaking of one because of the unconfused identity of essence. He theologized like the cherubim, and he intercedes for our souls. [SD]

To the tomb came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, seeking the Lord. They saw the Angel like lightning sitting on the stone, and he said to them, “Why do you seek among the dead Him who is alive? Glory be to You who showed the light. Glory in the highest to God. His peace is on earth, His good pleasure in mankind. [SD]
