Thou hast accepted the tears of Peter and the Harlot, and Thou hast justified the Publican when he groaned from the depths of his heart. My sins have brought me to despair, O Saviour: take pity on me also and save me. [KW]

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. Look upon Your world with mercy and compassion. Raise the Orthodox Christians in glory, and send down upon us Your rich mercies:

Πρόσεχε οὐρανέ, καὶ λαλήσω, καὶ ἀκουέτω ἡ γῆ ρήματα ἐκ στόματός μου.	Take heed, O heaven, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth. [SAAS]
Προσδοκάσθω ὡς ὑετὸς τὸ ἀπόφθεγμά μου, καὶ καταβήτω ὡς δρόσος τὰ ρήματά μου, ὡς ὄμβρος ἐπ᾿ ἄγρωστιν καὶ ὡσεὶ νιφετὸς ἐπὶ χόρτον.	Let my proverbial saying be awaited as the rain, and let my words come down as raindrops on the wild grass, and as snowfall on the sown grass.

Θεός, ἀληθινὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ, καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτοῦ κρίσεις.	He is God, His works are true; and all His ways are judgment.
Θεὸς πιστός, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀδικία, δίκαιος καὶ ὅσιος Κύριος.	A faithful God and without injustice; righteous and holy is the Lord.
Ἡμάρτοσαν οὐκ αὐτῷ τέκνα μωμητά, γενεὰ σκολιὰ καὶ διεστραμμένη. Ταῦτα Κυρίῳ ἀνταποδίδοτε;	They sinned; the blameworthy children are not His, a generation twisted and perverse. Is this how you repay the Lord?
Οὗτος λαὸς μωρὸς καὶ οὐχὶ σοφός; οὐκ αὐτὸς οὗτός σου πατὴρ ἐκτήσατό σε καὶ ἐποίησέ σε καὶ ἔπλασέ σε;	O foolish and unwise people, is He not your Father, who acquired you? Has He not made and created you?
Μνήσθητε ἡμέρας αἰῶνος, σύνετε ἔτη γενεᾶς γενεῶν.	Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations.
Ἐπερώτησον τὸν πατέρα σου, καὶ ἀναγγελεῖ σοι, τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους σου, καὶ ἐροῦσί σοι.	Ask your father, and he will tell you; your elders, and they will tell you:
Ὅτε διεμέριζεν ὁ Ὕψιστος ἔθνη, ὡς διέσπειρεν υἱοὺς ᾿Αδάμ, ἔστησεν ὅρια ἐθνῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ἀγγέλων Θεοῦ,	When the Most High divided the nations, when He scattered the sons of Adam, He set the boundaries of the nations by the number of God’s angels.
Καὶ ἐγενήθη μερίς Κυρίου λαὸς αὐτοῦ Ἰακώβ, σχοίνισμα κληρονομίας αὐτοῦ Ἰσραήλ.	For the Lord’s portion became the people of Jacob; the allotment of His inheritance is Israel.
Αὐτάρκησεν αὐτὸν ἐν γῇ ἐρήμῳ, ἐν δίψει καύματος ἐν γῇ ἀνύδρῳ· ἐκύκλωσεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐπαίδευσεν αὐτὸν καὶ διεφύλαξεν αὐτὸν ὡς κόρην ὀφθαλμοῦ.	He provided for him in the desert, in thirst of heat in a waterless place. He encircled him; He instructed him; He guarded him carefully as the apple of His eye.
Ὡς ἀετὸς σκεπάσαι νοσσιὰν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς νεοσσοῖς αὐτοῦ ἐπεπόθησε· διεὶς τὰς πτέρυγας αὐτοῦ ἐδέξατο αὐτοὺς καὶ ἀνέλαβεν αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν μεταφρένων αὐτοῦ.	As an eagle covers its nest, yearns after its young, spreading out its wings, taking them up, carrying them on its back.
Κύριος μόνος ἦγεν αὐτοὺς καὶ οὐκ ἦν μετ᾿ αὐτῶν θεὸς ἀλλότριος.	So the Lord alone led them, and there was no foreign god with them.
Ἀνεβίβασεν αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ τὴν ἰσχὺν τῆς γῆς, ἐψώμισεν αὐτοὺς γενήματα ἀγρῶν.	He raised them on the strength of the land; He fed them on the produce of the fields.
Ἐθήλασαν μέλι ἐκ πέτρας καὶ ἔλαιον ἐκ στερεᾶς πέτρας,	He suckled them on honey from the rock and oil from the solid rock.
Βούτυρον βοῶν καὶ γάλα προβάτων μετὰ στέατος ἀρνῶν καὶ κριῶν, υἱῶν ταύρων καὶ τράγων, μετὰ στέατος νεφρῶν πυροῦ, καὶ αἷμα σταφυλῆς ἔπιον οἶνον.	Butter of oxen and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs and goats, of sons of bulls and goats, with the choicest wheat; and you drank wine, the blood of grapes.
Καὶ ἔφαγεν Ἰακὼβ καὶ ἐνεπλήσθη, καὶ ἀπελάκτισεν ὁ ἠγαπημένος, ἐλιπάνθη, ἐπαχύνθη, ἐπλατύνθη· καὶ ἐγκατέλιπε τὸν Θεὸν τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπέστη ἀπὸ Θεοῦ σωτῆρος αὐτοῦ.	So Jacob ate and was filled, and the beloved kicked; he grew fat, he grew thick, he is obese. Then he forsook God who made him and stood back from God his Savior.
Παρώξυνάν με ἐπ᾿ ἀλλοτρίοις, ἐν βδελύγμασιν αὐτῶν ἐξεπίκρανάν με.	They provoked Me to wrath against foreign gods; with their abominations they embittered Me.
Ἔθυσαν δαιμονίοις καὶ οὐ Θεῷ, θεοῖς, οἷς οὐκ ᾔδεισαν· καινοὶ καὶ πρόσφατοι ἥκασιν, οὓς οὐκ ᾔδεισαν οἱ πατέρες αὐτῶν.	They sacrificed to demons, and not to God, to gods they did not know; new ones, recent gods arrived, which their fathers did not know.
Θεὸν τὸν γεννήσαντά σε ἐγκατέλιπες καὶ ἐπελάθου Θεοῦ τοῦ τρέφοντός σε.	You abandoned the God who begot you, and forgot the God who nourished you.
Καὶ εἶδε Κύριος καὶ ἐζήλωσε καὶ παρωξύνθη δι᾿ ὀργὴν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ θυγατέρων.	So the Lord saw it, and was jealous; and He was provoked to anger by His sons and daughters.
Καὶ εἶπεν· Ἀποστρέψω τὸ πρόσωπόν μου ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν καὶ δείξω τί ἔσται αὐτοῖς ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτων ἡμερῶν· ὅτι γενεὰ ἐξεστραμμένη ἐστίν, υἱοί, οἷς οὐκ ἔστι πίστις ἐν αὐτοῖς.	Then He said, I will turn My face from them, and I will make known what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation, sons in whom is no faith.
Αὐτοὶ παρεζήλωσάν με ἐπ᾿ οὐ Θεῷ, παρώργισάν με ἐν τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῶν· κἀγὼ παραζηλώσω αὐτοὺς ἐπ᾿ οὐκ ἔθνει, ἐπὶ ἔθνει ἀσυνέτῳ παροργιῶ αὐτούς.	They provoked Me to jealousy by what is not God; they moved Me to anger by their idols; but I will provoke them to jealousy by those who are not a nation; I will move them to anger by a foolish nation.
Ὅτι πῦρ ἐκκέκαυται ἐκ τοῦ θυμοῦ μου, καυθήσεται ἕως ᾅδου κατωτάτου, καταφάγεται γῆν καὶ τὰ γενήματα αὐτῆς, φλέξει θεμέλια ὀρέων.	For a fire is kindled in My anger, and shall burn to the lowest Hades; it shall consume the land with its produce And set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
Συνάξω εἰς αὐτοὺς κακὰ καὶ τὰ βέλη μου συντελέσω εἰς αὐτούς.	I will gather evils on them; I will spend My arrows on them.
Τηκόμενοι λιμῷ καὶ βρώσει ὀρνέων καὶ ὀπισθότονος ἀνίατος· ὀδόντας θηρίων ἐξαποστελῶ εἰς αὐτοὺς μετὰ θυμοῦ συρόντων ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.	They shall be wasted with hunger, devoured by birds and incurable disease; I will also send against them the teeth of wild animals With the anger of things crawling on the earth.
Ἔξωθεν ἀτεκνώσει αὐτοὺς μάχαιρα καὶ ἐκ τῶν ταμιείων φόβος· νεανίσκος σὺν παρθένῳ, θηλάζων μετὰ καθεστηκότος πρεσβυτέρου.	The sword shall make them childless outside, and fear from the inner chambers, for the young man and virgin, the nursing child with the elder of gray hairs.
Εἶπα· Διασπερῶ αὐτούς, παύσω δὲ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων τὸ μνημόσυνον αὐτῶν.	I said, I will scatter them; I will make their memory cease from among men.
Εἰ μὴ δι᾿ ὀργὴν ἐχθρῶν, ἵνα μὴ μακροχρονίσωσι, καὶ ἵνα μὴ συνεπιθῶνται οἱ ὑπεναντίοι.	But for the wrath of the enemy, lest they live long, lest their adversary make a joint attack.
Μὴ εἴπωσιν· Ἡ χεὶρ ἡμῶν ἡ ὑψηλὴ καὶ οὐχὶ Κύριος ἐποίησε ταῦτα πάντα.	Lest they should say, “Our hand is high; and it is not the Lord who did all this.”
Ὅτι ἔθνος ἀπολωλεκὸς βουλήν ἐστι, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐπιστήμη καὶ οὐκ ἐφρόνησαν συνιέναι.	For they are a nation void of counsel, nor is there understanding in them. They were not wise to understand these things.
Ταῦτα πάντα καταδεξάσθωσαν εἰς τὸν ἐπιόντα χρόνον.	Let them be concerned for the coming time.
Πῶς διώξεται εἷς χιλίους καὶ δύο μετακινήσουσι μυριάδας, εἰ μὴ ὁ Θεὸς ἀπέδοτο αὐτοὺς καὶ Κύριος παρέδωκεν αὐτούς;	How could one chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight unless God had sold them, and the Lord delivered them up?
Οὐ γὰρ εἰσὶν οἱ θεοὶ αὐτῶν ὡς ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν· οἱ δὲ ἐχθροὶ ἡμῶν ἀνόητοι.	For our God is not like their gods, but our enemies are foolish.
Ἐκ γὰρ ἀμπέλων Σοδόμων ἡ ἄμπελος αὐτῶν, καὶ ἡ κληματίς αὐτῶν ἐκ Γομόῤῥας· ἡ σταφυλὴ αὐτῶν σταφυλὴ χολῆς, βότρυς πικρίας αὐτοῖς.	For their vineyard is of the vineyard of Sodom, and their vine is of Gomorrah. Their grapes are grapes of gall; their clusters are bitter.
Θυμὸς δρακόντων ὁ οἶνος αὐτῶν καὶ θυμὸς ἀσπίδων ἀνίατος.	Their wine is the wrath of serpents, and the incurable wrath of asps.
Οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα συνῆκται παρ᾿ ἐμοὶ καὶ ἐσφράγισται ἐν τοῖς θησαυροῖς μου;	Behold, is this not laid up in store with Me, sealed up among My treasures?
Ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐκδικήσεως ἀνταποδώσω, ἐν καιρῷ, ὅταν σφαλῇ ὁ ποῦς αὐτῶν, ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἡμέρα ἀπωλείας αὐτοῖς, καὶ πάρεστιν ἕτοιμα ὑμῖν.	I shall repay on the day of vengeance; in time, when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and is waiting, ready for them.
Ὅτι κρινεῖ Κύριος τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ παρακληθήσεται.	For the Lord will judge His people, and have compassion on His servants.
Εἶδε γὰρ παραλελυμένους αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐκλελοιπότας ἐν ἐπαγωγῇ καὶ παρειμένους.	For He sees them disabled and left in distress and weakened.
Καὶ εἶπε Κύριος· Ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ θεοὶ αὐτῶν, ἐφ᾿ οἷς ἐπεποίθεισαν ἐπ᾿ αὐτοῖς;	The Lord said, ‘Where are their gods in which they trusted?’
Ὧν τὸ στέαρ τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν ἠσθίετε καὶ ἐπίνετε τὸν οἶνον τῶν σπονδῶν αὐτῶν; Ἀναστήτωσαν καὶ βοηθησάτωσαν ὑμῖν καὶ γενηθήτωσαν ὑμῖν σκεπασταί.	Who ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise and help you and be your defender.
Ἴδετε ἴδετε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι Θεὸς πλὴν ἐμοῦ· ἐγὼ ἀποκτενῶ καὶ ζῆν ποιήσω, πατάξω κἀγὼ ἰάσομαι, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ὃς ἐξελεῖται ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν μου.	Now see, I, even I, am He, and there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; nor is there any who can deliver from My hands.

Ἐπουράνιε βασιλεῦ, τοὺς πιστοὺς βασιλεῖς ἡμῶν στερέωσον· τὴν πίστιν στήριξον· τὰ ἔθνη πράυνον· τὸν κόσμον εἰρήνευσον· τὴν ἁγίαν ἐκκλησίαν καὶ τὴν πόλιν (ἢ τὴν ἁγίαν μονὴν) ταύτην καλῶς διαφύλαξον· τοὺς προαπελθόντας πατέρας καὶ ἀδελφοὺς ἡμῶν ἐν σκηναῖς δικαίων τάξον· καὶ ἡμᾶς ἐν μετανοίᾳ καὶ ἐξομολογήσει παράλαβε ὡς ἀγαθὸς καὶ φιλάνθρωπος.	O heavenly King, uphold our rulers, strengthen the Faith, calm the nations, give peace to the world. Protect this holy Church (or, Monastery); grant our departed fathers and brethren that they may dwell with the righteous, and accept us in repentance and confession; for You are good and benevolent.
Καὶ ποιοῦμεν Μετανοίας τρεῖς μεγάλας, λέγοντες μυστικῶς ἐν ἑκάστῃ Μετανοίᾳ ἀνὰ Στίχον τῆς ἑπομένης Εὐχῆς τοῦ Ὁσίου Ἐφραίμ.	We now make three prostrations: i.e. we recite the Prayer of St. Ephrem (quietly or mentally), and with each verse we make a bow or prostration.
Ἄν καὶ συνηθίζεται ἡ εὐχὴ αὕτη νὰ λέγεται ἐκφώνως, ὅμως ἡ ὀρθὴ πράξις εἶναι νὰ λέγεται μυστικῶς καὶ νοερῶς ὑπὸ πάντων, κλήρου τε καὶ λαοῦ, ποιούντων τῶν μετανοιῶν κτλ.	While it has become customary for this prayer to be recited by someone aloud, nevertheless the indicated practice is that it be recited inaudibly and mentally by everyone, clergy and congregants alike, with the accompanying bows etc.
Εὐχὴ τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἐφραίμ	Prayer of St. Ephrem
Κύριε καὶ Δέσποτα τῆς ζωῆς μου, πνεῦμα ἀργίας, περιεργίας, φιλαρχίας καὶ ἀργολογίας μή μοι δῷς.	O Lord and Master of my life, do not permit the spirit of laziness and meddling, the lust for power and idle talk to come into me.
Πνεῦμα δὲ σωφροσύνης, ταπεινοφροσύνης, ὑπομονῆς καὶ ἀγάπης χάρισαί μοι τῷ σῷ δούλῳ.	Instead, grant me, Your servant, the spirit of prudence, humility, patience and love.
Ναί, Κύριε βασιλεῦ, δώρησαί μοι τοῦ ὁρᾶν τὰ ἐμὰ πταίσματα, καὶ μὴ κατακρίνειν τὸν ἀδελφόν μου. Ὅτι εὐλογητὸς εἶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.	Yes, Lord and King, give me the power to see my own faults and not to judge my brother. For You are blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Μετὰ δὲ ταύτας, ἑτέρας μικρὰς ιβ Μετανοίας, λέγοντες καθʼ ἑκάστην, «Ὁ Θεός, ἱλάσθητί μοι τῷ ἁμαρτωλῷ, καὶ ἐλέησόν με». Εἶ αὖθις Μετάνοιαν μεγάλην μίαν, λέγοντες πάλιν τὸν τελευταῖον στίχον τῆς ἀνωτέρω Εὐχῆς.	Then we make the sign of the cross 12 times, each time saying, “God, be gracious to me a sinner and have mercy on me.” Then we repeat the third verse of the Prayer (quietly or mentally) and make a final bow or prostration.
