Τόπος Κρανίου Παράδεισος γέγονε· μόνον γὰρ ἐπάγη τὸ ξύλον τοῦ Σταυροῦ, εὐθὺς ἐβλάστησε τὸν βότρυν τῆς ζωῆς, σὲ Σωτήρ, εἰς ἡμῶν εὐφροσύνην· Δόξα σοι.	The Place of the Skull became Paradise; for once the tree of the Cross was planted there, immediately it blossomed the grape cluster of life, namely You, O Savior, to gladden our hearts. As Your Mother was watching You, voluntarily * crucified with the robbers on either side, O Christ, * she was cut to the quick, and as a mother and she said, * “O my sinless Son, alas, You were nailed to the Cross, unjustly, as if a convict, * O most benevolent Savior, in order to give life to humanity.” [GOASD]

Τί τὸ καινὸν καὶ ξένον τοῦτο Υἱέ μου θαῦμα; πῶς σε ἄνομος δῆμος, τῷ σταυρῷ προσπηγνύει, τὴν τῶν ἁπάντων ζωήν, φῶς μου γλυκύτατον;	When she beheld Thee hanging on the Cross, Thy Virgin Mother lamented bitterly and cried to Thee: ‘What is this new and strange wonder, O my Son? Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Στίχ. Τῶν Πατέρων καὶ ἡμῶν Θεός, εὐλογητὸς εἶ.	Verse: Blessed are You, the God of our fathers.
Δροσοβόλον μὲν τὴν κάμινον εἰργάσατο, Ἄγγελος τοῖς ὁσίοις παισί· τοὺς Χαλδαίους δὲ καταφλέγον, πρόσταγμα Θεοῦ, τὸν τύραννον ἔπεισε βοᾷν· Εὐλογητὸς εἶ ὁ Θεός, ὁ τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν.	In the furnace the Lord’s Angel saved the pious men, * blowing through it a dew-laden breeze, * while Chaldean men were completely burned, at God’s command, * persuading the tyrant to confess * and cry aloud, “O God of our fathers, blessed are You.” [SD]

Μετὰ χρόνιον εἱρκτὴν οἱ τεσσαράκοντα, καὶ δύο Χριστοῦ Μάρτυρες, τῆς τοῦ σώματος φυλακῆς λυθέντες ὡς αὐτοῦ, φυλάξαντες νόμους ἀληθεῖς, φύλακες ὤφθησαν ἡμῶν, οἰκοῦντες τοὺς οὐρανούς.	After being incarcerated for many years, the Forty-two Martyrs of Christ, who had held to His true statutes, were freed from the prison of the flesh and became our custodians, while living in the Heavens. Στίχ. Εὐλογημένος εἶ ὁ ἐπὶ θρόνου δόξης τῆς βασιλείας σου, ὁ ὑπερύμνητος καὶ ὑπερυψούμενος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.	Verse: Blessed are You on the throne of Your kingdom, and You are praised and exalted beyond measure unto the ages. [SAAS]

Αἰχμαλώτους θείους παῖδας ἐμιμήσασθε, τρεῖς τοὺς ἐν Βαβυλῶνι ποτέ, ὡς αἰχμάλωτοι ἀπαχθέντες, χώραν εἰς μακράν, καλλίνικοι Μάρτυρες, ἐν ᾗ τὸν πολυτάραχον ἐχθρὸν ἠχμαλωτεύσατε.	As captives taken away into a far away country, you imitated the three godly Youths who were prisoners in ancient Babylon, O righteous and victorious Martyrs; and therefore you defeated the most hostile adversary. Ῥείθροις αἵματος ὑμῶν τῆς ματαιότητος, χειμάῤῥους ἐξηράνατε, ποταμίοις δὲ ἐμβληθέντες ῥεύμασι Σοφοί, πρὸς ὕδωρ μετέβητε ζωῆς, ἐποχετεύοντες ἡμῖν, ἀθανασίας κρουνούς.	O prudent Saints, by the trickling of your blood, you made the rivers of conceit go dry; and thrown into the currents of the river, you came into the water of life, causing springs of immortality to spurt forth for our sake. Τόμος Ἄχραντε καινότατος ὑπάρχουσα, τὸν Λόγον ἐγγραφόμενον, ἐν σοὶ ἔσχηκας, τὸν ἐν βίβλῳ ζώντων τοὺς αὐτοῦ, ἐγγράψαντα θείους Ἀθλητάς, τὰ γεγραμμένα ἐμμελῶς ἀποπληρώσαντα.	You, O pure one, are the tome of a new book having inscribed in you the Word, Who has etched into the Book of Life the divine athletes who conscientiously completed what He has written. [un]

Ἐκ φλογὸς τοῖς ὁσίοις, δρόσον ἐπήγασας, καὶ δικαίου θυσίαν, ὕδατι ἔφλεξας· ἅπαντα γὰρ δρᾷς, Χριστὲ μόνῳ τῷ βούλεσθαι· σὲ ὑπερυψοῦμεν, εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας.	From the flame You refreshed pious Servants as with dew * and with water consumed the righteous Prophet’s sacrifice. * You accomplish all, O Christ, simply by willing it. * We exalt You beyond measure, unto all the ages. O athlete Constantine, with strength you endured the empty-headed men who coerced you to detach yourself from the love of Christ; and you were added to the list of Martyrs. [un]

Ὥσπερ ἄκακοι ἄρνες ὁμοῦ θυόμενοι, πρὸς δυσὶν Ἀθλοφόροι οἱ τεσσαράκοντα, πάθος τὸ σεπτόν, τοῦ τυθέντος ὡς πρόβατον, χαίροντες μιμοῦνται, πολλῇ σὺν παῤῥησίᾳ.	Like innocent lambs sacrificed with each other, the Forty-two champions with magnificent bravery gladly imitated the eminent sufferings of Him who was sacrificed as though He were a sheep. [un]

Νυμφοστόλιστος φανείς σοι θεῖος Ἀρχάγγελος, Χαῖρε πύρινε θρόνε Θεοῦ ἐβόα σοι, Ἄχραντε Ἁγνή, ἀθλοφόρων κραταίωμα, ὁμολογησάντων Θεὸν σαρκὶ φανέντα.	The holy Archangel appeared to you as a bridegroom, saying to you: Rejoice, O throne of God in fire, pure and unblemished Virgin, anchor of the champions who confessed God incarnate. [un]

Εὐλογεῖτε, πάχναι καὶ χιόνες, ἀστραπαὶ καὶ νεφέλαι τὸν Κύριον· ὑμνεῖτε καὶ ὑπερυψοῦτε αὐτὸν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.	Bless the Lord, you hoarfrosts and snows, you lightning and clouds, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages.
Εὐλογεῖτε, φῶς καὶ σκότος, νύκτες καὶ ἡμέραι, τὸν Κύριον· ὑμνεῖτε καὶ ὑπερυψοῦτε αὐτὸν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.	Bless the Lord, you light and darkness, you night and day, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages.
Εὐλογεῖτε, γῆ, ὄρη καὶ βουνοί, καὶ πάντα τὰ φυόμενα ἐν αὐτῇ, τὸν Κύριον· ὑμνεῖτε καὶ ὑπερυψοῦτε αὐτὸν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.	Bless the Lord, you earth, you mountains and hills, and all you things growing on the earth, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages.

Nailed to the Cross in Thy compassion, Thou hast opened Paradise to the Thief. I have fallen among thieves through the cunning of the devil; my soul and my whole body have been wounded. Through fasting let us glorify our flesh and enrich our souls with virtues. Τῷ Πάθει σου Κτίσις ἐκλονήθη, σταυρῷ σε θεασαμένη καθηλούμενον, Σῶτερ ὑπεράγαθε· ὅθεν ἱκετεύω σε, ταῖς προσβολαῖς κλονούμενον, ἀεὶ τοῦ ὄφεως, στερέωσον τὸν νοῦν μου, Οἰκτίρμον, σοῦ τῶν θελημάτων, ἐν ἀῤῥαγεῖ τῇ πέτρᾳ.	O Saviour, supreme in love, at Thy Passion the creation shook with fear, seeing Thee nailed upon the Cross. My mind is always shaken by the assaults of the serpent: I pray Thee, merciful Lord, establish it firmly on the unbroken rock of Thine own will. [KW]

Ἡ πύλη Θεοῦ ἡ κεκλεισμένη, ἣν μόνος διώδευσεν ὁ Κύριος, ἴθυνον πρὸς τρίβους με, θείας καὶ διάνοιξον, τῆς σωτηρίας πύλας μοι θεοχαρίτωτε! πρὸς σὲ γὰρ καταφεύγω Παρθένε, μόνη προστασία, τοῦ γένους τῶν ἀνθρώπων.	Thou art the Gate of God that is closed, through which the Lord alone has passed: direct me on the paths of God and open unto me the gates of salvation, O Virgin full of grace. Thou art the only Protection of mankind, and to thee I flee for refuge. [KW]

Στίχ. Εὐλογεῖτε, Ἀνανία, Ἀζαρία, καὶ Μισαήλ, τὸν Κύριον· ὑμνεῖτε καὶ ὑπερυψοῦτε αὐτὸν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.	Verse: Bless the Lord, O Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [SAAS]
Τὸ Ξύλον τὸ πανάγιον, ἐν ᾧ σὺ Χριστέ μου ἐσταυρώθης ὑμνῶν, ὑπερευλογῶ σε, εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας.	I sing the praises of the holy Wood on which Thou, my Christ, wast crucified, and I bless Thee above all for ever. [KW]

Ἐν Γολγοθᾷ οἱ ἄνομοι, σὲ Χριστὲ σταυρώσαντες ἀπέκτειναν, ἀλλὰ ζῇς καὶ σῴζεις, ἡμᾶς εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας. Εὐλογοῦμεν Πατέρα, Υἱόν, καὶ ἅγιον Πνεῦμα.	The transgressors crucified and killed Thee on Golgotha, O Christ: but Thou dost live and save us for ever. [KW]

Τριαδικόν.	For the Trinity.
Ξενοπρεπῶς μερίζεται, ἡ Τριάς, καὶ μένει ἀμερὴς ὡς Θεός, ὃν ὑπερυψοῦμεν, εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας.	In a strange manner the Trinity is divided, while yet remaining undivided as God. Him do we exalt above all for ever. [KW]

Ἱκετηρίαν ποίησον, ὑπὲρ τῶν ὑμνούντων σε Πανάχραντε, ῥυσθῆναι παντοίων, πειρασμῶν καὶ κινδύνων.	Intercede for those who sing thy praises, O All-Undefiled, that they may be delivered from every danger and temptation. [KW]
Δόξα σοι ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν, δόξα σοι.	Glory to You, our God, glory to You.
Τῇ τοῦ Σταυροῦ σου Κύριε, δυνάμει νευρώσας με ἀξίωσον, εὐψύχως ἀνύσαι, τὸν τῆς Νηστείας δρόμον.	Strengthening me by the power of the Cross, O Lord, grant me with good courage to complete the course of the Fast. [KW]

Killing the passions, the present Fast brings promise of healing to those wounded by sin. God has given us this Fast to help us: let us honour and accept it as the divinely-written tables of the Law, given through Moses. Let us not choose wanton self-indulgence, because of which the tables once were broken; let us not perish with those whose carcasses fell in the wilderness. Let us not be like the Jews, of a sad countenance, but let us rejoice with the Church. Let us not be hypocrites like the Pharisees, but in the spirit of the Gospels let us put on the beauty of holiness, glorying in the Cross of Christ the Deliverer of our souls. [KW]

Killing the passions, the present Fast brings promise of healing to those wounded by sin. God has given us this Fast to help us: let us honour and accept it as the divinely-written tables of the Law, given through Moses. Let us not choose wanton self-indulgence, because of which the tables once were broken; let us not perish with those whose carcasses fell in the wilderness. Let us not be like the Jews, of a sad countenance, but let us rejoice with the Church. Let us not be hypocrites like the Pharisees, but in the spirit of the Gospels let us put on the beauty of holiness, glorying in the Cross of Christ the Deliverer of our souls. [KW]

O heavenly King, uphold our rulers, strengthen the Faith, calm the nations, give peace to the world. Καὶ ποιοῦμεν Μετανοίας τρεῖς μεγάλας, λέγοντες μυστικῶς ἐν ἑκάστῃ Μετανοίᾳ ἀνὰ Στίχον τῆς ἑπομένης Εὐχῆς τοῦ Ὁσίου Ἐφραίμ.	We now make three prostrations: i.e. we recite the Prayer of St. Ephrem (quietly or mentally), and with each verse we make a bow or prostration.
Ἄν καὶ συνηθίζεται ἡ εὐχὴ αὕτη νὰ λέγεται ἐκφώνως, ὅμως ἡ ὀρθὴ πράξις εἶναι νὰ λέγεται μυστικῶς καὶ νοερῶς ὑπὸ πάντων, κλήρου τε καὶ λαοῦ, ποιούντων τῶν μετανοιῶν κτλ.	While it has become customary for this prayer to be recited by someone aloud, nevertheless the indicated practice is that it be recited inaudibly and mentally by everyone, clergy and congregants alike, with the accompanying bows etc.
Εὐχὴ τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἐφραίμ	Prayer of St. Ephrem
Κύριε καὶ Δέσποτα τῆς ζωῆς μου, πνεῦμα ἀργίας, περιεργίας, φιλαρχίας καὶ ἀργολογίας μή μοι δῷς.	O Lord and Master of my life, do not permit the spirit of laziness and meddling, the lust for power and idle talk to come into me.
Πνεῦμα δὲ σωφροσύνης, ταπεινοφροσύνης, ὑπομονῆς καὶ ἀγάπης χάρισαί μοι τῷ σῷ δούλῳ.	Instead, grant me, Your servant, the spirit of prudence, humility, patience and love.
