From Octoechos - - -

In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [RSV]

Then the foe used eating from the tree * to get Adam banished from Paradise. * Now crucified upon a tree, * Christ allowed the Robber enter it, * when he said: Remember me * when You come in Your kingdom, O Lord. [SD]

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. [RSV]

I revere and honor and extol * Your holy Passion, and I glorify * Your resurrection, and I sing * joining Adam and the Robber and say * joyfully: Remember me * when You come in Your kingdom, O Lord. [SD]

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. [RSV]

Sinless Savior, You were crucified * and laid in a tomb voluntarily. * But then, as God, You arose, * resurrecting Adam with yourself. * He cried out: Remember me * when You come in Your kingdom, O Lord. [SD]

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. [RSV]

We Your people now invoke the name * of Your holy Mother entreating for us. * O Good One, at her fervent prayers, * send Your mercies to us, Christ, as we sing * glorifying You who rose * from the sepulcher, like a sun for us. [SD]

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. [RSV]

The humble is lifted up on high ⁄ from the dung-hill of the passions, ⁄ while the proudhearted suffers a great: fall from the height of the virtues. ⁄ Let us flee from his evil ways. [OCA]

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [RSV]

Vainglory disperses the treasures of righteousness, ⁄ but humility scatters the multitude of passions. ⁄ Then grant that we may seek humility, O Savior, ⁄ and bestow on us the portion of the Publican. [OCA]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

As the Publican, let us beat our breasts, ⁄ crying out in compunction: ⁄ O God, be merciful to us sinners, ⁄ that like him, we may receive forgiveness. [OCA]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

I have set my trust in you, my only refuge: ⁄ Do not let me fall away from my good hope, ⁄ but grant me your protection, pure Virgin, ⁄ and deliver me from every assault by my enemies! [OCA]

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

For the Martyr.

The reading is from Paul’s Letter to the Romans.

Ρωμ 8:28 – 39

Rom. 8:28 – 39

Brethren, we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things with him? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies; who is to condemn? Is it Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. [RSV]

The Gospel

16th Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

Λκ 18:9 – 14

Lk. 18:10 – 14

The Lord said this parable, “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.
