Δικαίων ψυχαὶ ἐν χειρὶ Θεοῦ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἅψηται αὐτῶν βάσανος. Ἔδοξαν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἀφρόνων τεθνάναι. Καὶ ἐλογίσθη κάκωσις ἡ ἔξοδος αὐτῶν, καὶ ἡ ἀφʼ ἡμῶν πορεία σύντριμμα, οἱ δὲ εἰσιν ἐν εἰρήνῃ. Καὶ γὰρ ἐν ὄψει ἀνθρώπων ἐὰν κολασθῶσιν, ἡ ἐλπὶς αὐτῶν ἀθανασίας πλήρης. Καὶ ὀλίγα παιδευθέντες, μεγάλα εὐεργετηθήσονται, ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς ἐπείρασεν αὐτούς, καὶ εὗρεν αὐτοὺς ἀξίους ἑαυτοῦ. Ὡς χρυσὸν ἐν χωνευτηρίῳ ἐδοκίμασεν αὐτούς, καὶ ὡς ὁλοκάρπωμα θυσίας προσεδέξατο αὐτούς. Καὶ ἐν καιρῷ ἐπισκοπῆς αὐτῶν ἀναλάμψουσι, καὶ ὡς σπινθῆρες ἐν καλάμῃ διαδραμοῦνται. Κρινοῦσιν ἔθνη, καὶ κρατήσουσι λαῶν καὶ βασιλεύσει αὐτῶν Κύριος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας, οἱ πεποιθότες ἐπʼ αὐτόν, συνήσουσιν ἀλήθειαν, καὶ οἱ πιστοὶ ἐν ἀγάπῃ προσμενοῦσιν αὐτῷ, ὅτι χάρις καὶ ἔλεος ἐν τοῖς ὁσίοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπισκοπὴ ἐν τοῖς ἐκλεκτοῖς αὐτοῦ.	The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torture will ever touch them. In the eyes of the undiscerning they seemed to have died, and their departure was considered to be misfortune, and their passage from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in man’s view they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Though chastened in a few things, great kindness will be shown them, for God tested them and found them worthy of Himself. He tested them like gold in a furnace and accepted them as a whole burnt offering. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and they will run about like sparks through straw. They will judge nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord shall reign over them unto the ages. Those who trust in Him will understand truth, and the faithful shall continue with Him in love, because grace and mercy are upon His elect [and He watches over His holy ones]. [SAAS]

Δίκαιοι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ζῶσι, καὶ ἐν Κυρίῳ ὁ μισθὸς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἡ φροντίς αὐτῶν παρὰ Ὑψίστῳ. Διὰ τοῦτο λήψονται τὸ βασίλειον τῆς εὐπρεπείας, καὶ τὸ διάδημα τοῦ κάλλους ἐκ χειρὸς Κυρίου, ὅτι τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ σκεπάσει αὐτούς, καὶ τῷ βραχίονι ὑπερασπιεῖ αὐτῶν. Λήψεται πανοπλίαν, τὸν ζῆλον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὁπλοποιήσει τὴν κτίσιν εἰς ἄμυναν ἐχθρῶν. Ἐνδύσεται θώρακα, δικαιοσύνην, καὶ περιθήσεται κόρυθα, κρίσιν ἀνυπόκριτον. Λήψεται ἀσπίδα ἀκαταμάχητον, ὁσιότητα, ὀξυνεῖ δὲ ἀπότομον ὀργὴν εἰς ῥομφαίαν. Συνεκπολεμήσει αὐτῷ ὁ κόσμος ἐπὶ τοὺς παράφρονας, πορεύσονται εὔστοχοι βολίδες ἀστραπῶν, καὶ ὡς ἀπὸ εὐκύκλου τόξου τῶν νεφῶν, ἐπὶ σκοπὸν ἁλοῦνται, καὶ ἐκ πετροβόλου θυμοῦ πλήρεις ῥιφήσονται χάλαζαι. Ἀγανακτήσει κατʼ αὐτῶν ὕδωρ θαλάσσης, ποταμοὶ δὲ συγκλύσουσιν ἀποτόμως. Ἀντιστήσεται αὐτοῖς πνεῦμα δυνάμεως, καὶ ὡς λαῖλαψ ἐκλικμήσει αὐτούς, καὶ ἐρημώσει πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἀνομία, καὶ ἡ κακοπραγία περιτρέψει θρόνους δυναστῶν. Ἀκούσατε οὖν, Βασιλεῖς, καὶ σύνετε, μάθετε, δικασταὶ περάτων γῆς, ἐνωτίσασθε οἱ κρατοῦντες πλήθους, καὶ γεγαυρωμένοι ἐπὶ ὄχλοις ἐθνῶν, ὅτι ἐδόθη παρὰ Κυρίου ἡ κράτησις ὑμῖν, καὶ ἡ δυναστεία παρὰ Ὑψίστου.	The righteous live forever, and their reward is with the Lord; and their care is by the Most High. Therefore they shall receive a kingly dwelling of dignity and a crown of beauty from the hand of the Lord, because He will shelter them with His right hand and protect them with His arm. He will take His zeal as His full armor and will turn His creation into weapons against His enemies. He will wear righteousness as a breastplate and put on impartial judgment as a helmet. He will take holiness as an unconquerable shield and sharpen His relentless wrath for a sword; and creation will fight with Him against the senseless. Well-aimed flashes of lightning will strike and leap to their object as from a well-drawn bow of clouds; and hailstones full of anger will be hurled as from an engine of war. The water of the sea will be vexed with them, and the rivers will wash over them severely. A powerful wind will oppose them, and like a storm it will winnow them away. Lawlessness will lay waste all the earth, and wrongdoing will overturn the thrones of rulers. Listen therefore, O kings, and understand; learn, O judges of the ends of the earth. Give ear, you that rule over multitudes, and take pride in yourself over a multitude of nations. For power was given to you from the Lord, and your lordship from the Most High. [SAAS]

Εὐάρεστος Θεῷ γενόμενος, ἠγαπήθη, καὶ ζῶν μεταξὺ ἁμαρτωλῶν, μετετέθη. Ἡρπάγη, μὴ κακία ἀλλάξῃ σύνεσιν αὐτοῦ, ἢ δόλος ἀπατήσῃ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ. Βασκανία γὰρ φαυλότητος ἀμαυροῖ τὰ καλά, καὶ ῥεμβασμὸς ἐπιθυμίας μεταλλεύει νοῦν ἄκακον. Τελειωθεὶς ἐν ὀλίγῳ, ἐπλήρωσε χρόνους μακρούς· ἀρεστὴ γὰρ ἦν Κυρίῳ ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ· διὰ τοῦτο ἔσπευσεν ἐκ μέσου πονηρίας. Οἱ δὲ λαοὶ ἰδόντες καὶ μὴ νοήσαντες, μηδὲ θέντες ἐπὶ διανοίᾳ τὸ τοιοῦτον, ὅτι χάρις καὶ ἔλεος ἐν τοῖς ὁσίοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπισκοπὴ ἐν τοῖς ἐκλεκτοῖς αὐτοῦ.	Though a righteous man may die before his time, he shall be at rest. For old age is not honored for its length of existence, nor measured by its number of years; but discernment is gray hair for mankind, and a spotless life is the maturity of old age. There was once a man pleasing to God and loved by Him, and while living among sinners he was taken up. He was caught up lest evil change his understanding or deceit deceive his soul. For envy arising from lack of judgment obscures what is good, and a whirling of desire undermines an innocent heart. He was made perfect, for in a short time he fulfilled long years, for his soul was pleasing to the Lord; therefore, He took him early from the midst of evil. Yet peoples saw this but did not understand, nor take such a thing to heart, that the Lord’s grace and mercy are with His elect and that He watches over His holy ones. [SAAS]

Brethren, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἀκούσας ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Ἰωάννης παρεδόθη, ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν, καὶ καταλιπὼν τὴν Ναζαρὲτ ἐλθὼν κατῴκησεν εἰς Καπερναοὺμ τὴν παραθαλασσίαν ἐν ὁρίοις Ζαβουλὼν καὶ Νεφθαλείμ, ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος· γῆ Ζαβουλὼν καὶ γῆ Νεφθαλείμ, ὁδὸν θαλάσσης, πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, Γαλιλαία τῶν ἐθνῶν, ὁ λαὸς ὁ καθήμενος ἐν σκότει εἶδε φῶς μέγα, καὶ τοῖς καθημένοις ἐν χώρᾳ καὶ σκιᾷ θανάτου φῶς ἀνέτειλεν αὐτοῖς. At that time, Jesus when heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles — the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” [RSV]

Τῇ ΙΑʹ τοῦ αὐτοῦ μηνός, μνήμη τοῦ Ὁσίου Πατρὸς ἡμῶν Θεοδοσίου τοῦ Κοινοβιάρχου καὶ Καθηγητοῦ τῆς Ἐρήμου.	On January 11 we commemorate our devout father Theodosius, the Cenobiarch and Mentor of the Wilderness.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ, ἡ Σύναξις τῶν μυρίων Ἁγίων Ἀγγέλων. Τελεῖται δὲ ἔνδον τοῦ Μαρτυρίου τῆς Ἁγίας Ἀναστασίας ἐν τοῖς Δομνίνου ἐμβόλοις.	On this day is the Synaxis in honor of the myriads of holy Angels. It was held in the Martyrium of St. Anastasia at the Colonnade of Domninus.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ, μνήμη τοῦ Ἁγίου Στεφάνου, τοῦ ἐν Πλακιδιαναῖς, καὶ τῶν Ἁγίων Θεοδώρου καὶ Ἀγαπίου τοῦ Ἀρχιμανδρίτου.	On this day we also commemorate St. Stephen in Placidiane, and St. Theodore and St. Agapios the Archimandrite.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ, ὁ Ἅγιος Μάϊρος αἰκιζόμενος τελειοῦται.	On this day St. Major died by torture.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ, ὁ Ὅσιος Βιτάλιος ἐν εἰρήνῃ τελειοῦται.	On this day devout St. Vitalius reposed in peace.
Ὁ Ὅσιος Θεοδόσιος, ἡγούμενος τῆς ἐν Ἄθῳ ἱερᾶς Μονῆς τοῦ Φιλοθέου καὶ ἐπίσκοπος Τραπεζοῦντος χρηματίσας, ἐν εἰρήνῃ τελειοῦται.	Devout St. Theodosius, Abbot of Philotheou Monastery on Athos, who also became Bishop of Trebizond, reposed in peace.
