Ἤ, ἀντὶ τῶν Ἀντιφώνων, κατὰ τὸ τυπικόν, ψάλλονται τὰ Τυπικὰ καὶ οἱ Μακαρισμοί.

An optional alternative to the Antiphons are the Typika (Psalms 102 and 145), and the Beatitudes with the appointed troparia, which are provided here.

Ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ σου μνήσθητι ἡμῶν Κύριε, ὅταν ἔλθῃς ἐν τῇ Βασιλείᾳ σου. Μακάριοι οἱ πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι, ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ Βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.

In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [RSV]

Μακάριοι οἱ πενθοῦντες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ παρακληθήσονται.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. [RSV]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

Ἐπονείδιστον ὑπέμεινας, πάθος, Χριστέ, καὶ τὰ ὀνείδη ἡμῶν, πάντα ἀφείλω ἀγαθέ, καὶ τῆς ἄνω Βασιλείας ἡμᾶς, κοινωνοὺς ἀνέδειξας, προσκυνοῦντας τὴν σήν συγκατάβασιν.

O Christ, the Passion You suffered for our sake * was shameful, and thus You took away our shame, * O most benevolent Lord, * and You granted Your heavenly * Kingdom and rule to us * who extol Your condescension to us. [SD]

Μακάριοι ἐστὲ ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς, καὶ διώξωσι, καὶ εἴπωσι πᾶν πονηρὸν ῥῆμα καθʼ ὑμῶν, ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Τοῦ Ἀδὰμ Χριστὲ τὴν γύμνωσιν, σὺ περιστέλλων ἐγυμνώθης σαρκί, καὶ ἀνυψώθης ἐν σταυρῷ, ἀνυψῶν ἡμᾶς ἐκ βάθους κακῶν· ὅθεν σου δοξάζομεν, τὴν ἁγίαν, Λόγε, συγκατάβασιν.

You wrapped yourself in Adam’s nakedness, * and in the flesh You were stripped naked, O Christ, * and You were lifted on the Cross * and from the depth of evils lifted us. * And therefore we glorify * Your holy condescension, O Word. [SD]

Χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὅτι ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Τοῖς ἁγίοις ὑμῶν τραύμασι, πληθὺν δαιμόνων τραυματίσαντες, πάντων ἀνθρώπων τὰς πληγάς, καὶ τὰ τραύματα πανεύφημοι μάρτυρες, ἐν χάριτι, καθʼ ἑκάστην ἀεὶ θεραπεύετε.

All-lauded Martyrs, each day you ever cure * the wounds and the injuries of all mankind, * by grace divine that you have, * for by the wounds and the injuries * you endured in martyrdom * you wounded the demonic hosts. [SD]

Τὸν Πατέρα προσκυνήσωμεν, καὶ τὸν Υἱὸν δοξολογήσωμεν, καὶ τὸ Πανάγιον ὁμοῦ, πάντες Πνεῦμα ἀνυμνήσωμεν, κράζοντες καὶ λέγοντες· Παναγία Τριάς, σῶσον πάντας ἡμᾶς.

All-blameless Lady, standing by the Cross, * you watched as your Son and God was crucified, * physically nailed to the Cross, * and you wept aloud and cried to Him, * “Where has Your ineffable * gracious beauty set, O merciful Christ?” [SD]

Διʼ ἐγκρατείας τῶν παθῶν, τὰς πυριφλέκτους, ἀπονεκρώσαντες ὁρμάς, καὶ τὰς κινήσεις, τοῦ Χριστοῦ οἱ Μάρτυρες, ἔλαβον τὴν χάριν, τὰς νόσους ἀποδιώκειν, τῶν ἀσθενῶν, καὶ ζῶντες καὶ μετὰ τέλος, θαυματουργεῖν, ὄντως θαῦμα παράδοξον! ὅτι ὀστέα γυμνά, ἐκβλύζουσιν ἰάματα. Δόξα τῷ μόνῳ Θεῷ ἡμῶν.

When they had deadened burning impulses and movements * of sinful passions by their self-control and virtue, * then the Martyrs of Christ were given the divine grace * of driving away the illnesses of the sick * and working wonders, alive and after their death. * Paradoxical miracle it is indeed, that naked bones * should pour out cures abundantly. * Glory be to our only God. [SD]

Timothy, my son, do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor participate in another man’s sins; keep yourself pure. No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. The sins of some men are conspicuous, pointing to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. So also good deeds are conspicuous; and even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden. Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be defamed. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brethren; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these duties. If any one teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching which accords with godliness, he is puffed up with conceit, he knows nothing; he has a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions, and wrangling among men who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such people. There is great gain in godliness with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, and it is certain that we cannot take anything out of the world; but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs. But as for you, man of God, shun all this. [RSV]

At that time, as some spoke to Jesus about the temple how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, “As for these things, which you see, the days will come when there shall not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” And they asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign when this is about to take place?” And he said, “Take heed that you are not led astray. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it; for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. Alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days! For great distress shall be upon the earth and wrath upon this people; they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” [RSV]

   

   

Ὕμνος εἰς τὴν Θεοτόκον.

Hymn to the Theotokos.

Ἄξιόν ἐστιν ὡς ἀληθῶς μακαρίζειν σε τὴν Θεοτόκον, τὴν ἀειμακάριστον καὶ παναμώμητον καὶ μητέρα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Τὴν τιμιωτέραν τῶν Χερουβεὶμ καὶ ἐνδοξοτέραν ἀσυγκρίτως τῶν Σεραφείμ, τὴν ἀδιαφθόρως Θεὸν Λόγον τεκοῦσαν, τὴν ὄντως Θεοτόκον, σὲ μεγαλύνομεν.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Εἴδομεν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν, ἐλάβομεν Πνεῦμα ἐπουράνιον, εὕρομεν πίστιν ἀληθῆ, ἀδιαίρετον Τριάδα προσκυνοῦντες· αὕτη γὰρ ἡμᾶς ἔσωσεν.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
