God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. [SAAS]

Στίχ. αʹ. Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ.

Verse 1: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

Στίχ. βʹ. Πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐκύκλωσάν με, καὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου ἠμυνάμην αὐτούς.

Verse 2: All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.

Στίχ. γʹ. Παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν.

Verse 3: And this came about from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes.

Ὡς τοῦ Κυρίου μαθητής, ἀνεδέξω Δίκαιε τὸ Εὐαγγέλιον· ὡς Μάρτυς ἔχεις τὸ ἀπαράτρεπτον· τὴν παῤῥησίαν ὡς Ἀδελφόθεος, τὸ πρεσβεύειν ὡς Ἱεράρχης. Ἱκέτευε Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ, σωθῆναι τὰς ψυχὰς ἠμών.

As a disciple of the Lord, you accepted the Gospel, O James the Just. As a Martyr you have unchangeability; as the Brother of the Lord you have confidence; and you can intercede as a hierarch. Intercede with Christ our God, entreating Him to save our souls. [SD]

Τὸν Λόγον τοῦ Πατρός, Χριστὸν τὸν Θεὸν ἡμῶν, ἐκ σοῦ σαρκωθέντα ἔγνωμεν, Θεοτόκε Παρθένε, μόνη ἁγνή, μόνη εὐλογημένη· διὸ ἀπαύστως σὲ ἀνυμνοῦντες μεγαλύνομεν.

We have come to know that the Word of the Father, Christ our God, became incarnate from you, O Virgin Theotokos, only pure, only blessed. Therefore we never cease to extol and magnify you. [SD]

Ἀναγινώσκεται τὸ οἰκεῖον Κάθισμα τοῦ Ψαλτηρίου, ἤτοι Κάθισμα 13. Μεθʼ ὃ ἡ μικρὰ Συναπτή.

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 13. Then the short litany.

Remembering our all-holy, immaculate, most blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

Ὁ σοφίσας ὑπὲρ ῥήτορας τοὺς ἁλιεῖς, καὶ ἐκπέμψας ὥσπερ κήρυκας πάσῃ τῇ γῇ, ἀφάτῳ φιλανθρωπίᾳ, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός, διʼ αὐτῶν κραταίωσον τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν σου, καὶ τοῖς πιστοῖς κατάπεμψον τὴν εὐλογίαν σου, ὁ μόνος ἐλεήμων καὶ φιλάνθρωπος.

You made the Fishermen wiser than orators, and sent them as preachers over all the earth, in Your ineffable benevolence, O Christ our God. Confirm Your Church through them, and send down Your blessing on the faithful, O only merciful benevolent Lord. [SD]

Verse: Their proclamation went forth into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.

Σαγηνεύσαντες τὰ ἔθνη οἱ ἁλιεῖς, καὶ διδάξαντες τὰ πέρατά σε προσκυνεῖν, σὺν Πατρὶ καὶ Πνεύματι, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός, διʼ αὐτῶν στερέωσον πίστιν τὴν ἔνθεον, καὶ τοῖς λαοῖς κατάπεμψον νῦν τὰ ἐλέη σου, ὁ μόνος ἐν Ἁγίοις ἀναπαυόμενος.

The Fishermen caught the nations in their nets, and they instructed the ends of the earth to worship You with the Father and the Spirit, O Christ our God. Through them establish the divine Faith, and send down Your mercies upon the peoples, O only Lord who repose in the holy. [SD]

Θείας γεγόναμεν κοινωνοὶ φύσεως, διὰ σοῦ Ἀειπάρθενε· Θεὸν γὰρ ἡμῖν σεσαρκωμένον ἔτεκες· διὸ κατὰ χρέος σε, πάντες εὐσεβῶς μεγαλύνομεν.

We have become partakers of divine nature through you, O ever-virgin Maid, since for us you gave birth unto God become incarnate. Therefore we all dutifully magnify you piously. [SD]

Εὐσπλαγχνίᾳ πτωχεύσας ὁ Θεός, πλουτιστὰς ἐξαπέστειλεν ὑμᾶς ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ, φαίνοντας πτωχείᾳ τοῦ κηρύγματος, πλοῦτον τὸν οὐράνιον τοῖς πέρασι, διʼ ὧν καὶ πλουτήσαντες, τὴν πίστιν τὴν ἔνθεον, ἀνυμνοῦμεν εὐσεβῶς, τὴν θείαν ὑμῶν μνήμην Ἀπόστολοι.

When for mercy’s sake God made himself poor, * the Savior sent you out into the world to enrich it. * Preaching in your poverty, you showed to all * that heavenly riches are available. * Through you, O Apostles, we became rich in godly faith; * and with joy we sing your praise * and solemnly keep your sacred memory. The inspired Apostles of the Lord, * as Disciple and the eyewitnesses of God’s Wisdom, * by the simplicity of their preaching style * disparaged the fallacious philosophies * of sages and orators, while wisely enlightening * all the nations to extol * the Creator and only Master of all. [GOASD]

Βοηθὸς τοῖς ἐν θλίψει Θεοκυῆτορ, καὶ προστάτις ὑπάρχεις τοῖς ἐν ἀνάγκαις, ἀπεγνωσμένοις ἐλπίδα παρέχουσα, καὶ ἀνιάτων τὰς νόσους καθαίρουσα, Θεοτόκε Πανύμνητε· διὸ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν δυσώπει τὸν Κύριον.

O Mother of God, you are the helper of those in trouble, the defender of the oppressed. You give hope to those in despair, and you cure incurable diseases, O all-lauded Theotokos. We pray you implore the Lord on our behalf. [GOASD]

Ταῖς τῶν θαυμάτων ἀκτῖσι Νικόλαε, καταφαιδρύνεις ὑφήλιον ἅπασαν, καὶ λύεις τὸν ζόφον τῶν θλίψεων, καὶ τῶν κινδύνων ἐλαύνεις τὴν ἔφοδον, προστάτης ὑπάρχων θερμότατος.

You, O Saint Nicholas, fully illuminate * all of the earth with the rays of your miracles. * The gloom of afflictions you terminate, * driving away the attacks that endanger us. * For you are a most ardent guardian. [SD]

O Immaculate, you alone bore God without seed, and after the amazing childbirth you continued in chastity. I fall down before you and cry out with fear and faith: Save me from passions and grievous illnesses and from all necessity. [SD]

Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. With hymns of praise we piously extol you, the son of Joseph and the first hierarch of Jerusalem, and we cry to you, O James the seer of God and Brother of the Lord: Give to us a perfect gift from the Father of lights, and drive away the coming and present tribulation brought on by our many sins; for the enemies have raised their heel against us, and Ishmaelites have surrounded us. Smash their arrows quickly, O Hierophant and Apostle, that we may honor your memory. [SD]

On October 23, we commemorate the holy Hieromartyr and Apostle James, the Brother of the Lord.

Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ μνήμη τοῦ ὁσίου Πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰγνατίου, Πατριάρχου Κωνσταντινουπόλεως.

On this day we also commemorate our devout father Ignatius, Patriarch of Constantinople.

Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ μνήμη τοῦ ὁσίου Πατρὸς ἡμῶν Μακαρίου τοῦ Ῥωμαίου.

On this day we also commemorate our devout father Makarios the Roman.

Ὁ ὅσιος Πατὴρ ἡμῶν Νικηφόρος, ὁ ἱδρυτὴς τῆς ἐν Χαρσιανῷ Μονῆς, ἐν εἰρήνῃ τελειοῦται.

Our devout father Nikephoros, the founder of the Monastery of Charsianos, died in peace.

A cornerstone was cut out without hands from a never-quarried mountain, * which prefigured you, holy Virgin. * The stone is Christ, who joined the disparate natures. * As we rejoice because of this, O Theotokos, we magnify you. [SD]

Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth.

Νεανίσκοι καὶ παρθένοι, πρεσβύτεροι μετὰ νεωτέρων· αἰνεσάτωσαν τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου, ὅτι ὑψώθη τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ μόνου.

Young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord’s name, for His name alone is exalted.

His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people.

To deal retribution to the nations, reproving among the peoples.

To shackle their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.

To fulfill among them the written judgment: this glory have all His holy ones.
