Apolytikion. For the Saint. |

A rule of faith are you, and an icon of gentleness, and a teacher of self-control. And to your flock this was evident, by the truth of your life and deeds. You were humble and therefore you acquired exalted gifts, treasure in heaven for being poor. Father holy hierarch Abercius, intercede with Christ our God, and entreat Him to save our souls. [SD] |
Glory. For the Martyrs. |

O Mother of Christ our God, all-blameless Virgin most pure, * as Symeon told, a sword pierced through your all-holy soul * when you saw your Son and God * crucified by transgressors of His own will, O Lady. * Cease not to importune Him, * that He grant the forgiveness * of failings to us your servants, * O only most-blessed one. For the Cross. |
Mode 2. |
You worked salvation in the midst of the earth, O Christ our God. You stretched out your immaculate hands on the Cross, and gathered all the nations, who cry to You: “Lord, glory to You!” [SD] |
Verse: Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at the footstool of His feet; for He is holy. |
O benevolent Lord, as an intercessor we we present to You the life-giving Cross of Your goodness, which we the unworthy have as a gift from You. Save our leaders and our nation and keep them in peace, through the Theotokos. [SD] |
Glory. Both now. Stavrotheotokion. |
O Christ, Your virgin Mother saw You stretched out on the Cross, and she cried bitterly and said, “O my Son, what is this awful mystery? You who give life eternal to all, how is it that You voluntarily die a painful death on a cross?” [SD] |
The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 11. There is no litany, but immediately the following: |

For the Cross. |
Mode 2. |
We venerate Your immaculate icon, O good Lord, and entreat You to forgive our offenses, O Christ our God. By Your own choice you were pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, to deliver us, whom You created, from our slavery to the foe. Therefore we cry to You with gratitude: You have filled all things with joy, O our Savior, by coming to save the world. [SD] |
Verse: God is our King before the ages; He worked salvation in the midst of the earth. |
O Savior, you illumined the earth by Your Cross, and You called all sinners to repentance. I pray You do not separate me from Your flock, O Good Shepherd. But rather look for me, the lost sheep, and include me in Your holy flock, O only good and benevolent Master. [SD] |
Glory. Both now. Stavrotheotokion. |
When Your Mother, who gave birth to You without seed, was standing near Your Cross, she could not bear to watch You suffer unjustly. She lamented and wept and cried out to You, “O sweetest Son of mine, how do You suffer, since You are by nature impassible? I extol Your extreme goodness.” [SD] |
From Octoechos - - - |
Kathisma III. |
For the Cross. |
Mode 2. |
Like the Robber, I confess, and I cry to You who are good: “Remember me, O Lord, in Your kingdom.” Number me with him, O Savior who voluntarily accepted to suffer on our behalf. [SD] |
Verse: God is wondrous in His saints. |
For the Martyrs. |
O victorious Athletes of the Lord, blessed is the ground that was watered with your blood, and holy are the dwellings that received your spirits. You prevailed over the enemy in the stadium, and you openly proclaimed Christ. We pray you will earnestly entreat Him for us, that He save our souls, since He is good. [SD] |
Glory. Both now. Stavrotheotokion. |

Τὰ ἄνω ζητῶν. |
The all-blameless Maid * cried out when she beheld her Son * be nailed to the Cross, * “How new is this miracle! * He who holds the universe * in His hand is undergoing suffering, * and He who grants forgiveness to all * is judged and condemned like a criminal.” [SD] |

Psalm 50 (51). |
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar.
