Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. [SAAS]

Be glad in the Lord, O Island of Cephalonia, for in your bosom you possess Gerasimos the new ascetic, as God-given treasure. He came to you by divine summons, and shined resplendently in ascetic struggles. Having transcended earthly limits, he became an abode of grace, through his union with the divine. And his earthly body was rendered incorruptible by the Holy Spirit, and it has been given to you as a fountain of miracles. For it delivers you from pestilence, and it drives out demons, and provides every good thing to those who cry: “Glory be to You, O Lord!” [SD]

From an early age you dedicated yourself to the Savior. And therefore you overlooked your prestige in the world and became poor in spirit, O devout Gerasimos. Having died to the world, through asceticism you cultivated the gifts of the incorruptible life. Floating on divine love, you moved from place to place, hastening as a thirsty deer to perfection in virtue. And when you obtained what you desired, you were filled with many blessings from on high. Hence you gladden the Church with your many gifts of grace. And with the radiant beams of your miracles, you bring light to those who cry: “Glory be to You, O Lord!” [SD]

The feats of your ascetic life transcended nature; and thus they shined more brightly than the sun, O God-bearing father Gerasimos. You lived as though you had no flesh, and you triumphed over the might of the fleshless demons. You emaciated the flesh by persistent fasting, all-night standing, and the torrent of your tears; while you brightened your soul through perpetual prayer, ascetic discipline, and contemplation, ever imagining the beauty of the divine. And when you became a living house of the Holy Trinity, you built a divine Monastery, where the choirs of nuns undeviatingly follow you, crying out to God: “Glory be to You, O Lord!” [SD]

Moved by the divine Spirit, you went to Kefallinía, O holy one, and you hallowed it with your presence and by the sweat of your holy labors. You became a trainer of nuns, a divine guide and a model of virtue. You finished the course of ascetic discipline, and found rest in the eternal mansions. From that time, your divine body, which was rendered incorruptible by divine grace, has been given to us whole and fragrant, emitting the sweet scent of eternal life. It dispels the stench of the unclean spirits, and it sanctifies and gladdens those who cry: “Glory be to You, O Lord!” [SD]

O God-bearing St. Gerasimos, the glory and support and great boast of Cephalonians, you glorified God through your labors, and from Him you richly received the gift to do miracles. Cease not from looking after your Island, and preserve it unharmed from every wrath. The Monastery of Omalon is proud of your relic. Under your invisible supervision, show it to be a fruitful vine. And for all who honor you, request the salvation of their souls and the healing of their bodies, so that we may ever cry to God: “Glory be to You, O Lord!” [SD]

O heavenly King, I know how many wonders You can perform, for I have seen how you made your divine and godly-minded Gerasimos very rich. He was planted in Your house, and he flourished in righteousness. He increased the spiritual seeds of Cephalonia, where he was a model and example of divine virtues for us. Therefore, by the entreaties of Your holy one, whose confidence before You is great, account us worthy of Your kingdom, as we with faith and longing celebrate his every-venerable memory. [SD]

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us.

READER: Amen.
