Μακάριοι οἱ ἐλεήμονες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ ἐλεηθήσονται.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. [RSV]

Ἀμέμπτως τῷ Θεῷ πολιτευσάμενοι, τὴν πάντων ἐκύησαν σωτηρίαν, οἱ θεόφρονες γεννήτορες, τῆς τὸν Κτίστην τεκούσης καὶ Θεὸν ἡμῶν.

The holy parents, who had lived before the Lord without reproach ⁄ brought forth the salvation of all, ⁄ giving birth to the one who bore our Creator and our God. [OCA]

The Lord, Who is a spring of life to all, ⁄ led forth the Virgin from a barren womb. ⁄ He was well pleased to enter into her, ⁄ preserving her virginity inviolate after childbirth. [OCA]

Μακάριοι οἱ δεδιωγμένοι ἕνεκεν δικαιοσύνης, ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ Βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

Τῆς Ἄννης τὸν καρπὸν Μαρίαν σήμερον, τὴν βότρυν κυήσασαν ζωηφόρον, ὡς Θεοτόκον ἀνυμνήσωμεν, προστασίαν τε πάντων καὶ βοήθειαν.

Let us exalt Mary today: ⁄ the fruit of Anna who brought forth the Life-giving cluster. ⁄ Let us sing her praises as the Theotokos, ⁄ protector and helper of us all. [OCA]

Ἐν ἀβύσσῳ πταισμάτων.

Μακάριοι ἐστὲ ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς, καὶ διώξωσι, καὶ εἴπωσι πᾶν πονηρὸν ῥῆμα καθʼ ὑμῶν, ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Γονιμώτατον σπόρον ἡ στεῖρα τὸ πρίν, Ἄννα δεξαμένη ἐκ θείας ἐλλάμψεως, παῖδα τεκεῖν ἠξίωται, τὴν τῶν πάντων κτισμάτων δεσποζουσαν.

Anna, who had been barren, having received from divine illumination a most fruitful seed, was made worthy to bear a maiden, the mistress of all things created. [VPA]

Χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὅτι ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Νῦν ἡ στεῖρα γεννῶσα βουλήσει Θεοῦ, πείθει παραδέχεσθαι Παρθένον τίκτουσαν, ἄνευ σαρκὸς θελήματος, τοῦ αὐτοῦ βουληθέντος Θεοῦ προφανῶς.

Now the barren one, giving birth by the will of God persuades us to accept the Virgin conspicuously conceiving God Himself by His own will, without the will of the flesh. [VPA]

Ἐλλαμφθεὶς Ἠσαΐας τῷ Πνεύματι, τοῦ Ἰωακεὶμ καὶ τῆς Ἄννης τὸ κύημα, τόμον καινὸν ἑώρακεν, ᾧ ἐγράφη ὁ Λόγος σαρκούμενος.

Isaiah, having been illumined by the Spirit, saw the child of Joachim and Anna as a new book in which the incarnate Logos was written. [VPA]

Μυστηρίου προτρέχει μυστήριον· πρὶν γὰρ ἡ στειρεύουσα, χάρις γεγέννηκε, τῆς σωτηρίας πρόξενον, παρθενίας γεννήσει φανεῖσαν ἡμῖν.

Mystery goes before mystery, for Anna, meaning grace, who was formerly barren, has given birth to the cause of salvation, who was revealed to us by her giving birth in virginity. [VPA]

Come, let us worship and bow down before Christ. Save us, O Son of God, who are wondrous in the saints. We sing to You, Alleluia.

Ἡ γέννησίς σου Θεοτόκε, χαρὰν ἐμήνυσε πάσῃ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ· ἐκ σοῦ γὰρ ἀνέτειλεν ὁ ἥλιος τῆς δικαιοσύνης, Χριστὸς ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν, καὶ λύσας τὴν κατάραν, ἔδωκε τὴν εὐλογίαν· καὶ καταργήσας τὸν θάνατον, ἐδωρήσατο ἡμῖν ζωὴν τὴν αἰώνιον.

Your Nativity, O Theotokos, imparted joy to the entire earth, for out of you has risen the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God. He nullified the curse and instead gave His blessing; and causing death to be neutralized, He granted us eternal life. [SD]

As we celebrate the memory of Your righteous Ancestors, through them we importune You, O Lord, that You save our souls [SD]

Ἰωακεὶμ καὶ Ἄννα ὀνειδισμοῦ ἀτεκνίας, καὶ Ἀδὰμ καὶ Εὔα, ἐκ τῆς φθορᾶς τοῦ θανάτου, ἠλευθερώθησαν, Ἄχραντε, ἐν τῇ ἁγίᾳ γεννήσει σου· αὐτὴν ἑορτάζει καὶ ὁ λαός σου, ἐνοχῆς τῶν πταισμάτων, λυτρωθεὶς ἐν τῷ κράζειν σοι· Ἡ στεῖρα τίκτει τὴν Θεοτόκον, καὶ τροφὸν τῆς ζωῆς ἡμῶν.

Both Joachim and Anna from their sterility’s stigma, and Adam and Eve from their mortality’s ruin have been set free, O immaculate Maid, by your holy nativity. For this do your people hold celebration, redeemed from the guilt of transgression as they cry to you, “The barren one bears the Theotokos, the nourisher of our Life.” [GKD]

Brethren, Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married.” [RSV]

Take heed then how you hear; for to him who has will more be given, and from him who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him for the crowd. And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” But he said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

Ἄξιόν ἐστιν ὡς ἀληθῶς μακαρίζειν σε τὴν Θεοτόκον, τὴν ἀειμακάριστον καὶ παναμώμητον καὶ μητέρα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Τὴν τιμιωτέραν τῶν Χερουβεὶμ καὶ ἐνδοξοτέραν ἀσυγκρίτως τῶν Σεραφείμ, τὴν ἀδιαφθόρως Θεὸν Λόγον τεκοῦσαν, τὴν ὄντως Θεοτόκον, σὲ μεγαλύνομεν.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Εἴδομεν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν, ἐλάβομεν Πνεῦμα ἐπουράνιον, εὕρομεν πίστιν ἀληθῆ, ἀδιαίρετον Τριάδα προσκυνοῦντες· αὕτη γὰρ ἡμᾶς ἔσωσεν.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, whose memory we are observing, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
