At that time, the collectors of the half-shekel tax went up to Peter and said, “Does not your teacher pay the tax?” He said, “Yes.” And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their sons or from others?” And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel; take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.” At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” [RSV]

Timothy, my son, those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these instructions to you so that, if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of our religion: God was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, through the pretensions of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and enjoin abstinence from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving; for then it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. [RSV]

And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to bid fire come down from heaven and consume them as Elijah did?” But he turned and rebuked them and he said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of; for the Son of man came not to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went on to another village. As they were going along the road, he said to those who were following him, “All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see what you see! The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torture will ever touch them. In the eyes of the undiscerning they seemed to have died, and their departure was considered to be misfortune, and their passage from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in man’s view they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Though chastened in a few things, great kindness will be shown them, for God tested them and found them worthy of Himself. He tested them like gold in a furnace and accepted them as a whole burnt offering. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and they will run about like sparks through straw. They will judge nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord shall reign over them unto the ages. Those who trust in Him will understand truth, and the faithful shall continue with Him in love, because grace and mercy are upon His elect [and He watches over His holy ones]. [SAAS]

The righteous live forever, and their reward is with the Lord; and their care is by the Most High. Therefore they shall receive a kingly dwelling of dignity and a crown of beauty from the hand of the Lord, because He will shelter them with His right hand and protect them with His arm. He will take His zeal as His full armor and will turn His creation into weapons against His enemies. He will wear righteousness as a breastplate and put on impartial judgment as a helmet. He will take holiness as an unconquerable shield and sharpen His relentless wrath for a sword; and creation will fight with Him against the senseless. Well-aimed flashes of lightning will strike and leap to their object as from a well-drawn bow of clouds; and hailstones full of anger will be hurled as from an engine of war. The water of the sea will be vexed with them, and the rivers will wash over them severely. A powerful wind will oppose them, and like a storm it will winnow them away. Lawlessness will lay waste all the earth, and wrongdoing will overturn the thrones of rulers. Listen therefore, O kings, and understand; learn, O judges of the ends of the earth. Give ear, you that rule over multitudes, and take pride in yourself over a multitude of nations. For power was given to you from the Lord, and your lordship from the Most High. [SAAS]

Εὐάρεστος Θεῷ γενόμενος, ἠγαπήθη, καὶ ζῶν μεταξὺ ἁμαρτωλῶν, μετετέθη. Ἡρπάγη, μὴ κακία ἀλλάξῃ σύνεσιν αὐτοῦ, ἢ δόλος ἀπατήσῃ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ. Βασκανία γὰρ φαυλότητος ἀμαυροῖ τὰ καλά, καὶ ῥεμβασμὸς ἐπιθυμίας μεταλλεύει νοῦν ἄκακον. Though a righteous man may die before his time, he shall be at rest. For old age is not honored for its length of existence, nor measured by its number of years; but discernment is gray hair for mankind, and a spotless life is the maturity of old age. There was once a man pleasing to God and loved by Him, and while living among sinners he was taken up. He was caught up lest evil change his understanding or deceit deceive his soul. For envy arising from lack of judgment obscures what is good, and a whirling of desire undermines an innocent heart. He was made perfect, for in a short time he fulfilled long years, for his soul was pleasing to the Lord; therefore, He took him early from the midst of evil. Yet peoples saw this but did not understand, nor take such a thing to heart, that the Lord’s grace and mercy are with His elect and that He watches over His holy ones. [SAAS]

Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾷ μνήμη τῶν ἁγίων τριακοντατριῶν Μαρτύρων, τῶν ἐκ Παλαιστίνης, ξίφει τελειωθέντων.	On this day we also commemorate the holy 33 Martyrs from Palestine who died by the sword.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾷ ἀνάμνησις τῆς εἰσόδου τῆς ἀχειροτεύκτου Μορφῆς τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ Θεοῦ καὶ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησου Χριστοῦ, ἐκ τῆς Ἐδεσσηνῶν πόλεως εἰς ταύτην τὴν θεοφύλακτον καὶ Βασιλίδα τῶν πόλεων ἀνακομισθείσης.	On this day we commemorate the entry of the Icon of the Face of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, which was not made by hands, from the city of Edessa into that God-protected Queen of Cities, Constantinople.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾷ ἀνάμνησιν ποιούμεθα τῆς περὶ ἡμᾶς τοῦ Θεοῦ μεγίστης καὶ ἀνυπερβλήτου φιλανθρωπίας, ἣν ἐδείξατο τότε ἀποστρέψας μετʼ αἰσχύνης τοὺς ἀθέους Ἀγαρηνούς, μεσιτείᾳ τῆς ὑπεραγίας Δεσποίνης ἡμῶν Θεοτόκου καὶ ἀειπαρθένου Μαρίας.	On this day we remember God’s immense and unsurpassed benevolence, which He demonstrated when He routed and put to shame the godless Hagerenes, by the mediation of our all-holy Lady the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾷ ἡ ἐν τῷ ναῷ τῆς Ζωοδόχου Πηγῆς ἐξάντλησις τοῦ ἁγιάσματος, καὶ αὖθις ἀνάδοσις.	On this day we remember when the water of the Life-giving Spring stopped and then started flowing again.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾷ μνήμη γίνεται τῆς μετὰ οἰκτιρμῶν ἐπενεχθείσης ἡμῖν ἐν τοῖς καιροῖς ἐκείνοις φοβερᾶς ἀπειλῆς τοῦ σεισμοῦ, οὗ παρʼ ἐλπίδα ἐλυτρώσατο ἡμᾶς ὁ φιλάνθρωπος Θεός.	On this day we also remember when at that time our humane God delivered us, against all hope, from the threat of earthquake, which was fearful and yet tempered by tender mercy.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾷ μνήμη τοῦ ὁσίου Πατρὸς ἡμῶν Γερασίμου τοῦ νέου ἀσκητοῦ, τοῦ ἐν τῇ νήσῳ Κεφαλληνίᾳ.	On this day we commemorate our devout father St. Gerasimos the New Ascetic from the island of Kefallinia.
Ὁ ἅγιος Νεομάρτυς Σταμάτιος ὁ ἐκ Βόλου, ὁ ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει μαρτυρήσας ἐν ἔτει ͵αχπʹ (1680), ξίφει τελειοῦται.	The holy Neo-martyr Stamatios of Volos, who witnessed in Constantinople in the year 1680, died by the sword.
Ὁ ὅσιος Πατὴρ ἡμῶν Τιμόθεος, ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Εὐρίπου, ὁ κτήτωρ τῆς Ἱερᾶς Μονῆς Πεντέλης, ἐν εἰρήνῃ τελειοῦται.	Our devout father St. Timothy, Archbishop of Evripos, the founder of the Holy Monastery of Pendeli, reposed in peace.
