Mode 4.

O Theotokos, revealed through you to us on earth was the mystery, that was hidden for ages and unknown by the angels. God became incarnate, uniting natures without confusion, and for us He voluntarily accepted crucifixion, through which He resurrected the first-formed man, and He saved our souls from death. [GOASD]

For the Martyrs.

Mode pl. 2. When the angelic powers.

Ἀγγελικαὶ Δυνάμεις.

The martyr athletes offered resistance in the ring, * contesting for the faith, and the tyrants tortured them. * The hosts of Incorporeals observed and were holding the victory medals. * The truly wise contestants amazed the tyrants and kings. * They overturned the devil by their confession of Christ. * O Lord, who strengthened them, glory to You. [SD]

Verse: God is wondrous in His saints. [SAAS]

The holy athletes endured the contest, and they received from You the medals of victory. They destroyed the machinations of the lawless, and they received the crowns of incorruption. Through them, O God, save our souls. [SD]

Verse: To the saints on His earth, in them He magnified all His will. [SAAS]

O Lord, the memory of Your Saints is like the Garden of Eden, for all creation greatly rejoices in it. Grant us peace and great mercy, by their intercessions. [SD]

O Lord, who called the blessed Maid Your Mother, You came to the Passion of Your own will and intent. Adam You wished to seek; You therefore shone upon the Cross, saying to the Angels, “Rejoice with me together, for I have found the coin that was lost.” O Lord, You have disposed all things wisely. Light always dawns for the righteous. The saints were illumined in You, and they shine like stars forever, and they extinguish the lamp of the impious. By their prayers, You will light my lamp, O Lord, and save me. [SD]

For the Dead.

Everything is truly vanity, and earthly life is a shadow and a dream. Every man stirs himself up in vain, as the Scripture says. Once we gain the world, then we attain the grave, where kings and poor dwell together. Therefore, O Christ God, grant rest to those who have passed away, since You are benevolent. [SD]

Ἐλπὶς τοῦ κόσμου ἀγαθή.

You are for us who are on earth * a powerful protection, * as the one who in time gave birth * in the flesh to the timeless * Son and Logos of God, O Mary Mother of God. * Now as His Mother pray * to Him in earnest with the saints, * the Martyrs and the Prophets * and the ascetic Saints, * to save those who have departed. First to be sown on earth by the heavenly Husbandman, O all-famed Stephen; first to shed your blood on the earth for Christ, O blessed one; you were the first to be honored by Him with the crown of victory in heaven, as the beginning of martyr athletes, O first crowned champion of the Martyrs. [SD]

Oikos.

Looking at the flowers of Paradise, which fill the whole world with their delightful sweetness, I am astonished at the strange sight of them; for even in the freezing cold of winter, they blossom all the more, a thing unheard of for flowers. Such is Christ’s Martyr, who blossomed first of all, and became a door to those who compete lawfully and flower in the cold of torments. He has shown the unerring path to those who desire to compete, he is the good leader of the race, who shone forth brightly in labors, the first crowned champion of the Martyrs. [SD]

On August 2, we commemorate the recovery of the Relic of Saint Stephen, the Protomartyr and Archdeacon.

On this day we also commemorate the finding of the relics of the holy Martyrs Maximus, Dadas, and Quintilian.

On this day we also commemorate the consecration of the holy Church of Saint John the Theologian, Apostle and Evangelist, near the most-holy Great Church.

On this day we commemorate the holy Martyr Phocas, and also the Emperor Justinian of pious memory, in the Church of the Holy Apostles.

By the intercessions of Your Saints, O God, have mercy and save us. Amen.

O Protomartyr, Apostle and first Deacon, you are the gateway of Martyrs, the glory of the Righteous, and the pride and joy of the Apostles. When you stood trial, You saw the heavens opened and the Son of God standing at the right hand of the invisible Father. Your face shone like an Angel. And with joy you cried on behalf of those who were stoning you, “Do not hold this sin against them.” So now, pray for us who lovingly sing your praises, that we may receive forgiveness of sins and great mercy.
