Ἀδελφοί, οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ τὰ ἱερὰ ἐργαζόμενοι ἐκ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐσθίουσιν, οἱ τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ προσεδρεύοντες τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ συμμερίζονται; οὕτω καὶ ὁ Κύριος διέταξε τοῖς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον καταγγέλλουσιν ἐκ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου ζῆν. ἐγὼ δὲ οὐδενὶ ἐχρησάμην τούτων. Οὐκ ἔγραψα δὲ ταῦτα ἵνα οὕτω γένηται ἐν ἐμοί· καλὸν γάρ μοι μᾶλλον ἀποθανεῖν ἢ τὸ καύχημά μου ἵνα τις κενώσῃ. ἐὰν γὰρ εὐαγγελίζωμαι, οὐκ ἔστι μοι καύχημα· ἀνάγκη γάρ μοι ἐπίκειται· οὐαὶ δὲ μοί ἐστιν ἐὰν μὴ εὐαγγελίζωμαι· εἰ γὰρ ἑκὼν τοῦτο πράσσω, μισθὸν ἔχω· εἰ δὲ ἄκων, οἰκονομίαν πεπίστευμαι. τίς οὖν μοί ἐστιν ὁ μισθός; ἵνα εὐαγγελιζόμενος ἀδάπανον θήσω τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Χριστοῦ, εἰς τὸ μὴ καταχρήσασθαι τῇ ἐξουσίᾳ μου ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ.	Brethren, do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel. But I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing this to secure any provision. For I would rather die than have any one deprive me of my ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my preaching I may make the gospel free of charge, not making full use of my right in the gospel. [RSV]

Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, προσελθόντες τῷ Ἰησοῦ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ Σαδδουκαῖοι πειράζοντες ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν σημεῖον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐπιδεῖξαι αὐτοῖς. ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· ὀψίας γενομένης λέγετε· εὐδία· πυρράζει γὰρ ὁ οὐρανός· καὶ πρωΐ· σήμερον χειμών· πυρράζει γὰρ στυγνάζων ὁ οὐρανός. ὑποκριταί, τὸ μὲν πρόσωπον τοῦ οὐρανοῦ γινώσκετε διακρίνειν, τὰ δὲ σημεῖα τῶν καιρῶν οὐ δύνασθε γνῶναι; γενεὰ πονηρὰ καὶ μοιχαλὶς σημεῖον ἐπιζητεῖ, καὶ σημεῖον οὐ δοθήσεται αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ τὸ σημεῖον Ἰωνᾶ τοῦ προφήτου. καὶ καταλιπὼν αὐτοὺς ἀπῆλθεν. Καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ πέραν ἐπελάθοντο ἄρτους λαβεῖν. ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· ὁρᾶτε καὶ προσέχετε ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων.	At that time, the Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather; for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed. When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” [RSV]

In those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the body of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” And what they said pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands upon them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. [RSV]

Τῇ ΚΗʹ τοῦ αὐτοῦ μηνός, μνήμη τῶν Ἁγίων Ἀποστόλων καὶ Διακόνων Προχόρου, Νικάνορος, Τίμωνος καὶ Παρμενᾶ.	On July 28, we commemorate the holy Apostles and Deacons Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, and Parmenas.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ, μνήμη τοῦ Ἁγίου Μάρτυρος Εὐσταθίου τοῦ ἐν Ἀγκύρᾳ.	On this day we also commemorate the holy Martyr Eustathius of Ancyra.
Τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ, μνήμη τοῦ Ἁγίου Μάρτυρος Ἀκακίου· καὶ ἀνάμνησις τῶν Ἐγκαινίων τοῦ ναοῦ τῆς Ὑπεραγίας Θεοτόκου ἐν τοῖς Διακονίσσης.	On this day we also commemorate the holy Martyr Acakius; and the consecration of the church of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Quarter of Deaconess.
Ἡ Ἁγία Μάρτυς Δροσίς, ἐν χώνῃ χρυσῇ βληθεῖσα, τελειοῦται.	On this day the holy Martyr Drosis died after she was cast into a crucible of gold.
Μνήμη τῆς Ὁσίας μητρὸς ἡμῶν Εἰρήνης τῆς ἐκ Καππαδοκίας, ἀσκησάσης ἐν τῇ Μονῇ τοῦ Χρυσοβαλάντου.	On this day we also commemorate our devout Mother Irene of Cappadocia, who lived in asceticism in the Monastery of Chrysovalantou.
Ὁ Ὅσιος Παῦλος ὁ Ξηροποταμηνός, ὁ ἱδρύσας τὰς δύο Μονάς, τὴν τοῦ Ξηροποτάμου καὶ τὴν τοῦ Ἁγίου Παύλου, ἤτοι τὴν τοῦ Ἁγίου Γεωργίου, ἐν Ἁγίῳ Ὄρει, ὁ ἐν ἔτει 820 ἀκμάσας, ἐν εἰρήνῃ τελειοῦται.	The devout Paul Xeropotaminos, who founded two Monasteries on Mount Athos, Xeropotamou and Saint Paul’s (which is dedicated to Saint George), and who flourished in the year 820, reposed in peace.
