LITURGY OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

An optional alternative to the Antiphons are the Typika (Psalms 102 and 145), and the Beatitudes with the appointed troparia, which are provided here.

Psalm 102.

Psalm 145.

The Beatitudes.

Mode 4.

In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Resurrectional.

From Octoechos - - -

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. [RSV]

Adam fell by a tree, and he was evicted from Paradise. * By the tree of the Cross the Robber gained entrance to Paradise. * The former, by tasting fruit, disobeyed his Maker’s commandment not to eat. * The latter was crucified with Him, whom though hidden he confessed to be God. * Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior. [SD]

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [RSV]

You were lifted on the Cross and destroyed the power of death on us, * and You set aside the bond which stood against us and, as God, cancelled it. * Grant that we may also have the Robber’s repentance, O benevolent Lord. * We faithfully worship You, O Christ our God, and we cry aloud to You, * “Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior.” [SD]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

You have set aside the bond which stood against us, shredding it by Your Cross. * When You were numbered with the dead, You disarmed and bound the tyrant ruling there, * delivering everyone from the bonds of death by Your resurrection; * through which we were illumined. And we cry out to You, O benevolent Lord, * “Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior.” [SD]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

Theotokion.

O Christ our God, we present, as an intercessor to pray for us, * Your Virgin Mother who conceived without seed and physically gave birth to You, * and after the childbirth remained incorrupt, O most merciful Lord. * She prays that You always grant forgiveness of offenses to those who cry aloud, * “Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior.” [SD]

Canon 1 for the Fathers.

From Menaion - - -

Ode vi. Mode 1. Jonah long ago.

Σπλάγχνων Ἰωνᾶν.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Strange and new indeed * was the wrong confusion of the natures of Christ that the heretical * council vomited; * and they also confused His two energies * into one peculiar and outlandish energy. * This has been condemned consistently * by the holy and Orthodox Councils all. [GOASD]

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Wishing to avoid * Nestorian heresy, which wrongly introduced duality of sons, * the unorthodox * council slid from the mire to the deepest pit, * promulgating the confusion of natures and wills * incorrectly, which the God-inspired * holy Fathers refuted decisively. [GOASD]

Glory.

Consubstantial is * the Son with the Father and the Spirit. And this is what the fathers of old * had precisely said. * So the Orthodox Council of Teachers, inspired * by the energies and grace of God, is teaching all, * recognizing that each nature has * its own natural will and its energy. [GOASD]

Both now.

Lady, you became * the door of the divinity and source of the ray of light that never sets. * For the plentitude * of the Godhead ineffably dwelt within * your immaculate and holy womb, all-blameless one. * You award the natural energy * and the light of the Godhead to those who ask. [GOASD]

Entrance Hymn. Mode 2.

Come, let us worship and bow down before Christ. Save us, O Son of God, risen from the dead. We sing to You, Alleluia.

Hymns after the Entrance.

From Octoechos - - -

Resurrectional Apolytikion.

Mode 4.

When the women disciples of the Lord heard the Angel joyously proclaim the resurrection, they cast aside the ancestral verdict, and boasting in glory they said to the Apostles, “Death has been despoiled! Christ God has risen, granting the great mercy to the world!” [GOASD]

For the Fathers.

Mode pl. 4.

Supremely blessed are You, O Christ our God. You established the holy Fathers upon the earth as beacons, and through them You have guided us all to the true Faith, O greatly merciful One, glory be to You. [SD]

The Apolytikion of the parish church is sung. Then:

Kontakion. Mode 2.

O Protection of Christians that never falls, intercession with the Creator that never fails, we sinners beg you, do not ignore the voices of our prayers. O good Lady, we implore you, quickly come unto our aid, when we cry out to you with faith. Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who protect now and ever those who honor you. [SD]

Trisagios Hymn

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.

THE READINGS

Prokeimenon. Mode pl. 4. Psalm 31.

Be glad in the Lord and rejoice greatly, O righteous ones. [SAAS]

Verse: Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven. [SAAS]

The Epistle

For the Fathers.

The reading is from Paul’s Letter to Titus.

Tit. 3:8 – 15

Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. [RSV]

Alleluia. Mode 4. Psalm 43.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Verse 1: O God, we heard with our ears. [SAAS]

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Verse 2: For You saved us from those who afflict us.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Gospel

For the Fathers.

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Mt. 5:14 – 19

The Lord said to his disciples, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Communion Hymn. Psalm 148.

Praise the Lord from the heavens. Alleluia. [SAAS]

and the following:

Communion Hymn. Psalm 111/112.

The righteous will be remembered for ever. Alleluia. [RSV]

Hymn after Holy Communion.

Mode 2.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

DISMISSAL

Glory to You, our God, glory to You.

May He who rose from the dead, Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and the Holy Fathers of the Fourth Ecumenical Council, whose memory we are observing; and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
