In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [RSV]

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. [RSV]

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. [RSV]

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. [RSV]

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. [RSV]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

When our primal father Adam disobeyed Your divine command, O Christ, You expelled him from Paradise. But when the faithful Robber while on the cross confessed You to be Lord, You restored him there, as he cried to You: “O Savior, when You come in Your kingdom, remember me.” [SD]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

O Apostles, with the Cross as if a fishing rod * you drew the peoples up from the deep sea of ignorance, * and you greatly diminished * on earth the error of the pagan Greeks. * For believers you became inerrant guides * and saviors indeed. * And therefore we now call you blest. [SD]

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

O Apostles, you became like mystic rays * and illustrious torches of Christ the Sun of righteousness, * and you greatly diminished * the darkness of impiety and led * all the peoples of the world to the light * of the knowledge of God. * Therefore we now honor you. [SD]

For the Martyrs.

Holy Athletes, you endured the burning fire * of the tortures and received from on high the dew of grace divine; * and as the faithful servants * of Christ now you mightily provide * cures and remedies for all human suffering. * Therefore, wise Saints of God, * we believers honor you. [SD]

As the sacred preachers of the Holy Trinity, * Peter, Paul, Mark, and Luke, Matthew, Simon, Iakovos, * Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, * also Bartholomew and James and John, * to our thrice-holy God pray on our behalf * to rescue us from all disasters and emergencies. [SD]

Lady full of grace divine, you are the beauty *of the Apostles of Christ; you are the joy of the Martyr Saints. * Pray to the God and Savior * of all the universe on our behalf, * that we may obtain forgiveness for all our sins, * and that all may attain * divine and eternal life. [SD]

O holy Apostles, make intercession to our merciful God, that He grant our souls forgiveness of offenses. [SD]

For St. Nicholas.

Mode 4.

A rule of faith are you, and an icon of gentleness, and a teacher of self-control. And to your flock this was evident, by the truth of your life and deeds. You were humble and therefore you acquired exalted gifts, treasure in heaven for being poor. O Father and Hierarch St. Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, and entreat Him to save our souls. [SD]

You have taken to yourself, O Lord, the pinnacles of Your Disciples, those unerring theologians and preachers, to enjoy Your blessings and repose. For You accepted their labors and their death as being higher than any whole-burnt offering, for only You know what is in the heart. [SD]

The reading is from Paul’s Letter to the Romans.

Rom. 15:17 – 29

Brethren, in Christ Jesus I have reason to be proud of my work for God. For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has wrought through me to win obedience from the Gentiles, by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Holy Spirit, so that from Jerusalem and as far round as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ, thus making it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on another man’s foundation, but as it is written, “They shall see who have never been told of him, and they shall understand who have never heard of him.” This is the reason why I have so often been hindered from coming to you. But now, since I no longer have any room for work in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to come to you, I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be sped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a little. At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem with aid for the saints. For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem; they were pleased to do it, and indeed - they are in debt to them, for if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings. When therefore I have completed this, and have delivered to them what has been raised, I shall go on by way of you to Spain; and I know that when I come to you I shall come in the fullness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ. The Gospel

Thursday of the 5th Week of Matthew

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Mt. 12:46 – 50, 13:1 – 3

At that time, while Jesus was still speaking to the crowds, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. Some one told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak to you.” But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.” That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he entered a boat and sat there; and the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables. [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Mode 2.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

Glory to You, our God, glory to You.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
