O Theotokos, revealed through you to us on earth was the mystery, that was hidden for ages and unknown by the angels. God became incarnate, uniting natures without confusion, and for us He voluntarily accepted crucifixion, through which He resurrected the first-formed man, and He saved our souls from death. By conceiving the Wisdom and Word of God * in your womb without burning, O Mother of God, * for the world’s sake you carried Him who has the whole world in His hand, * and in your arms you held Him who holds up the universe, * and you have nursed the Master who nourishes everything. * Therefore, O all-holy Virgin Mary, I pray you, * that I be forgiven of my offenses when I shall stand before Him who created me. * O all-lauded Lady most pure, I implore you to assist me in that hour. * I am sure you can accomplish whatever you wish. When the hosts of the Angels saw how You were accounted among the dead, they all marveled. You, O Savior, are the One who destroyed the might of death; and when You arose You raised Adam with yourself and from Hades liberated everyone. [SD] |

“Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples?” Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried to the myrrh-bearing women. “See for yourselves the empty tomb and understand, that the Savior has risen from the sepulcher.” |

Very early in the morning, the myrrh-bearing women were hastening to Your tomb lamenting. But the Angel appeared to them and uttered, “The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. Go announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.” |

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went out and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen. [RSV] |

Let the Jewish leaders explain it. How did the soldiers lose the King, whom they were guarding? Why couldn’t the stone secure the rock of life? Rejoice and be glad, all people! An Angel sat on the stone of the tomb. And he announced to us the good news and said, “Christ has risen from the dead, as the Savior of the world; and He has filled the universe with fragrance.” Rejoice and be glad, all people! [GOASD] |

Before Your conception, an Angel brought the salutation, “Rejoice!” to the Maiden full of grace. Again, at Your resurrection, an Angel rolled away the stone from Your glorious tomb, O Lord. The one brought a promise of joy, replacing the pain and sorrow. The other declared that the Master gives life, reversing the threat of death. When you were called not by men but by the Most High, * when the earthly darkness caused blindness to come upon * your body’s eyes, manifesting thus to all the people * the gloomy sullenness of impiety, * then it was that all around heavenly light shone forth, * dazzling the eyes of your reasoning, and thus revealing * to all the beauty of Orthodox belief. * Hence you acquired a full knowledge of Christ our God who from darkness brings out the light. * Therefore earnestly pray Him to illumine us and save our souls. |
When the beginningless Father’s Son and Logos * came to earth and chose His Twelve Apostles, and He asked, * “Who do the people say that I am?” it was Saint Peter, * being preeminent of the Savior Christ’s * Disciples, who then received from heaven grace divine, * and in a loud voice proclaimed and said, theologizing, * “You are the Son of the living God, O Christ.” * Hence he is worthily beatified * for receiving revelation from on high * and the power of binding and of loosing the sins of all. The name of Rock have you worthily been given. * On this rock the Lord of all confirmed the Church’s faith * which is unshaken; and He made you, O holy Peter, * the senior pastor of reason endowed sheep. * Therefore the benevolent Master appointed you * to hold the keys of the heav’nly gates, and thus to open * to every person approaching them with faith. * And you were therefore counted worthy of * imitating your Lord, being crucified. * We entreat you to pray Him to illumine us and save our souls. |
Lord, You have been our refuge from generation to generation. I said: Lord, have mercy on me. Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You. |
