For fear of the Jews, the Disciples were in hiding,* having congregated in Zion. Τὸν τάφον σου Σωτήρ.

The doors were shut and locked. You appeared to Your hiding * Disciples, as the Life, O my Christ, and You showed them * Your wounded side and hands and feet, * thus confirming Your resurrection* from the sepulcher. However Thomas was absent; * hence he said to them, “If I myself do not see Him, * I will not believe your words.” [SD]

Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. Your Cross, O Christ, we venerate, and Your holy Resurrection we praise and glorify. Your mind fully extended into the depth of contemplation in the Holy Spirit, O mystic of things sacred, you searched out the wealth of the divine words, O Father, and thereby you enriched the world. [SD]

As a lofty beacon of God-inspired doctrines, Father, every day you navigate those who are storm-tossed on the sea of error to the harbor of grace, by the calmness of your words. [SD]

O blessed Athanasius, you were like an an indestructible tower of the Church of Christ our God, and as such you completely destroyed all of Arius’ devices. [SD]

You planted the dogmas of Orthodoxy, * and you cut down the briars of heresy, * and thus you increased the seed of Faith, * with the rain of the Spirit, O holy one. * And therefore we hymn your memorial. [SD]

Oikos.

Let us believers extol today the most festive memorial of Athanasios. He brought down the errant Arius, Eunomius and Sabellius, by means of true dogmas; and he delivered them to burn in everlasting fire, for they had wrongly blasphemed against the Savior’s incarnation, which all the Prophets had announced. Therefore we hymn his memorial. [SD]

On May 2 we commemorate the recovery of the holy relics of our Father among the Saints Athanasius the Great, Patriarch of Alexandria.

Today is the foremost -- yea the Mistress -- of feast days, * in splendor fitly arrayed; * today rejoicing and merriment * well befit the people of God; * for this, the Eighth of Days, * bears eternity’s image, * being figure and type of the age to come. * Brethren, let us cry to Him, * “God exalted over all, * You, our fathers’ God and ours, for evermore are blessed.” [TC]

You made your heart a beehive of blessings; you pour out the sweetness of Orthodoxy for us. We gather it for ourselves, and we cry out: Blessed are You, the God of our Fathers. [SD]

O devout Saint, you were not afraid of the might of the godless. On the contrary, you charged the Orthodox people with boldness, and you in the Spirit you cried out: Blessed are You, the God of our Fathers. [SD]

O devout Saint, you were inseparate from the Spirit, and you kept the doctrine of the Trinity undivided, and you cried out: Blessed are You, the God of our Fathers. [SD]

Glory.

You correctly dogmatized concerning the consubstantial Trinity, and you reproached the wrong ideas of Arius and Sabellius. Therefore, we keep away from their contrary arguments, and we praise, and we bless, and exalt Christ beyond measure, unto all the ages. [SD]

With sacred hymns let us extol that great glory of priests, Athanasius, the invincible hero. By the power of the Spirit, he cut down the ranks of the heresies, and he raised the trophies of Orthodoxy throughout the world. He correctly expounded on the mystery of the Trinity, speaking of three because of the attributes of each Person, and then speaking of one because of the unconfused identity of essence. He theologized like the cherubim, and he intercedes for our souls. [SD]
