Verse 1: Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from before His face.

Verse 3: So shall the sinners perish from the face of God. And let the righteous be glad.

Ὑπὲρ τῆς ἄνωθεν εἰρήνης καὶ τῆς σωτηρίας τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For the peace from above and for the salvation of our souls, let us pray to the Lord.

Ὑπὲρ τῆς εἰρήνης τοῦ σύμπαντος κόσμου, εὐσταθείας τῶν ἁγίων τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἐκκλησιῶν καὶ τῆς τῶν πάντων ἑνώσεως τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For the peace of the whole world, for the stability of the holy churches of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

Ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἁγίου οἴκου τούτου καὶ τῶν μετὰ πίστεως, εὐλαβείας καὶ φόβου Θεοῦ εἰσιόντων ἐν αὐτῷ, τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For this holy house and for those who enter it with faith, reverence, and the fear of God, let us pray to the Lord.

Ὑπὲρ τῶν εὐσεβῶν καὶ ὀρθοδόξων χριστιανῶν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For pious and Orthodox Christians, let us pray to the Lord.

Ὑπὲρ τοῦ Ἀρχιεπισκόπου ἡμῶν (δεῖνος), τοῦ τιμίου πρεσβυτερίου, τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ διακονίας, παντὸς τοῦ κλήρου καὶ τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For our Archbishop (name), for the honorable presbyterate, for the diaconate in Christ, and for all the clergy and the people, let us pray to the Lord.

Ὑπὲρ τοῦ εὐσεβοῦς ἡμῶν γένους, τοῦ Προέδρου, πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας ἐν τῷ κράτει ἡμῶν, καὶ τοῦ κατὰ ξηράν, θάλασσαν καὶ ἀέρα φιλοχρίστου ἡμῶν στρατοῦ, τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For our country, the president, all those in public service, and for our armed forces everywhere, let us pray to the Lord.

Ὑπὲρ τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Χριστοῦ Μεγάλης Ἐκκλησίας, τῆς Ἱερᾶς ἡμῶν Ἀρχιεπισκοπῆς, [τῆς Ἱερᾶς Μητροπόλεως ταύτης,] τῆς πόλεως καὶ κοινότητος ταύτης, πάσης πόλεως, χώρας καὶ τῶν πίστει οἰκούντων ἐν αὐταῖς, τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For the Holy and Great Church of Christ, for our Sacred Archdiocese, [for this Sacred Metropolis,] for this city and parish, for every city and land, and for the faithful who live in them, let us pray to the Lord.

Ὑπὲρ εὐκρασίας ἀέρων, εὐφορίας τῶν καρπῶν τῆς γῆς καὶ καιρῶν εἰρηνικῶν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For favorable weather, for an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and for peaceful times, let us pray to the Lord.

Ὑπὲρ πλεόντων, ὁδοιπορούντων, νοσούντων, καμνόντων, αἰχμαλώτων καὶ τῆς σωτηρίας αὐτῶν τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For those who travel by land, sea, and air, for the sick, the suffering, the captives and for their salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

Ὑπὲρ τοῦ ῥυσθῆναι ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης θλίψεως, ὀργῆς, κινδύνου καὶ ἀνάγκης, τοῦ Κυρίου δεηθῶμεν.

For our deliverance from all affliction, wrath, danger, and distress, let us pray to the Lord.

Ἀντιλαβοῦ, σῶσον, ἐλέησον καὶ διαφύλαξον ἡμᾶς, ὁ Θεός, τῇ σῇ χάριτι.

Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and protect us, O God, by Your grace.

Τῆς παναγίας, ἀχράντου, ὑπερευλογημένης, ἐνδόξου, δεσποίνης ἡμῶν Θεοτόκου καὶ ἀειπαρθένου Μαρίας μετὰ πάντων τῶν ἁγίων μνημονεύσαντες, ἑαυτοὺς καὶ ἀλλήλους καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ζωὴν ἡμῶν Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ παραθώμεθα.

Remembering our all-holy, immaculate, most blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

Lord, I have cried to You; hear me. Hear me, O Lord. Lord, I have cried to You; hear me. Give heed to the voice of my supplication when I cry to You. Hear me, O Lord. [SAAS]

Κατευθυνθήτω ἡ προσευχή μου, ὡς θυμίαμα ἐνώπιόν σου, ἔπαρσις τῶν χειρῶν μου θυσία ἑσπερινή. Εἰσάκουσόν μου, Κύριε.

Ἐκ βαθέων ἐκέκραξά σοι, Κύριε· Κύριε, εἰσάκουσον τῆς φωνῆς μου.

Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. [SAAS]

Τὸν ζωοποιόν σου Σταυρόν, ἀπαύστως προσκυνοῦντες Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός, τὴν τριήμερόν σου ἀνάστασιν δοξάζομεν· διʼ αὐτῆς γὰρ ἀνεκαίνισας, τὴν καταφθαρεῖσαν τῶν ἀνθρώπων φύσιν Παντοδύναμε, καὶ τὴν εἰς οὐρανοὺς ἄνοδον, καθυπέδειξας ἡμῖν, ὡς μόνος ἀγαθὸς καὶ φιλάνθρωπος.

Unceasingly we venerate Your crucifixion that bestowed life, O Christ our God, and glorify Your resurrection on the third day. Thereby You refashioned human nature that was damaged; You also revealed to us the ascent into the heavens, O almighty Lord, singularly good and benevolent. [GOASD]

Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. [SAAS]

Τοῦ ξύλου τῆς παρακοῆς, τὸ ἐπιτίμιον ἔλυσας Σωτήρ, τῷ ξύλῳ τοῦ Σταυροῦ ἑκουσίως προσηλωθείς· καὶ εἰς ᾅδου κατελθὼν Δυνατέ, τοῦ θανάτου τὰ δεσμά, ὡς Θεός, διέῤῥηξας· διὸ προσκυνοῦμεν τὴν ἐκ νεκρῶν σου ἀνάστασιν, ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει βοῶντες· Παντοδύναμε Κύριε, δόξα σοι.

You rescinded the penalty for failure to obey at the tree, when You, O Savior, voluntarily were nailed to the tree of the Cross. As God, You broke the bonds of death, when You descended to the netherworld, O Mighty One. And now we honor Your resurrection from the dead, and we sing in exultation: Glory to You, O almighty Lord! [GOASD]

Ἐὰν ἀνομίας παρατηρήσῃς, Κύριε Κύριε, τίς ὑποστήσεται; ὅτι παρὰ σοὶ ὁ ἱλασμός ἐστιν.

If You, O Lord, should mark transgression, O Lord, who would stand? For there is forgiveness with You. [SAAS]

Πύλας ᾅδου συνέτριψας Κύριε, καὶ τῷ σῷ θανάτῳ, τοῦ θανάτου τὸ βασίλειον ἔλυσας· γένος δὲ τὸ ἀνθρώπινον, ἐκ φθορᾶς ἠλευθέρωσας, ζωὴν καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν τῷ κόσμῳ δωρησάμενος, καὶ τὸ μέγα ἔλεος.

You blasted the gates of Hades, and You toppled the regime of death, by Your death, O Master. You freed the human race from disintegration, for to the world You granted life, freedom from decay, and the great mercy. [GOASD]

Ἕνεκεν τοῦ ὀνόματός σου ὑπέμεινά σε, Κύριε, ὑπέμεινεν ἡ ψυχή μου εἰς τὸν λόγον σου. Ἤλπισεν ἡ ψυχή μου ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον.

Because of Your law, O Lord, I waited for You; my soul waited for Your word. My soul hopes in the Lord. [SAAS]

Δεῦτε ἀνυμνήσωμεν λαοί, τὴν τοῦ Σωτῆρος τριήμερον ἔγερσιν, διʼ ἧς ἐλυτρώθημεν τῶν τοῦ ᾅδου ἀλύτων δεσμῶν, καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν καὶ ζωήν, πάντες ἐλάβομεν κράζοντες· Ὁ σταυρωθείς, καὶ ταφείς, καὶ ἀναστάς, σῶσον ἡμᾶς τῇ ἀναστάσει σου, μόνε Φιλάνθρωπε.

Everybody, come, let us extol the Savior’s resurrection on the third day, through which we were released from inescapable imprisonment in the netherworld, and we all have received life and freedom from decay; and let us sing to Him, “O uniquely benevolent Lord, You were crucified and buried, and You rose. We pray You save us, by Your resurrection!” [GOASD]

Ἀπὸ φυλακῆς πρωΐας μέχρι νυκτός· ἀπὸ φυλακῆς πρωΐας ἐλπισάτω Ἰσραὴλ ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον.

From the morning watch until night; from the morning watch until night, let Israel hope in the Lord. [SAAS]

Ὡς γενναῖον ἐν Μάρτυσιν, ἀθλοφόρε Γεώργιε, συνελθόντες σήμερον, εὐφημοῦμέν σε, ὅτι τὸν δρόμον τετέλεκας, τὴν πίστιν τετήρηκας, καὶ ἐδέξω ἐκ Θεοῦ, τὸν τῆς νίκης σου στέφανον, ὂν ἱκέτευε, ἐκ φθορᾶς καὶ κινδύνων λυτρωθῆναι, τοὺς ἐν πίστει ἐκτελοῦντας, τὴν ἀεισέβαστον μνήμην σου.

To a brave one in martyr saints * we pay tribute to you today * gathered here together, victorious St. George. * For you completed the martyr’s course; * devoutly you kept the faith; * and from God you have received * laurel crowns for your victory. * Therefore supplicate * that He free from corruption and from dangers * those who loyally now honor * your ever-ven’rable memory. [SD]

Ὅτι παρὰ τῷ Κυρίῳ τὸ ἔλεος καὶ πολλὴ παρʼ αὐτῷ λύτρωσις, καὶ αὐτὸς λυτρώσεται τὸν Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ πασῶν τῶν ἀνομιῶν αὐτοῦ.

For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is abundant redemption; and He shall redeem Israel from all his transgressions. [SAAS]

Ῥωμαλέῳ φρονήματι, πεποιθὼς ηὐτομόλησας, ὥσπερ λέων ἔνδοξε, πρὸς τὴν ἄθλησιν, ὑπερορῶν μὲν τοῦ σώματος, ὡς φθείρεσθαι μέλλοντος, τῆς ἀφθάρτου δὲ ψυχῆς, σοφῶς ἐπιμελούμενος, καὶ κολάσεων, πολυτρόποις ἰδέαις ἐπυρώθης, ὡς χρυσὸς κεκαθαρμένος, ἑπταπλασίως Γεώργιε.

With a valiant attitude * as a lion you earnestly * advanced to the contest, O glorious St. George, * thus overlooking your physical * body that would decompose, * wisely caring for your soul * which remains incorruptible. * And when you endured * many methods of torture, you, O Martyr, * were refined like gold in fire * seven times over and purified. [SD]

Αἰνεῖτε τὸν Κύριον, πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, ἐπαινέσατε αὐτόν, πάντες οἱ λαοί.

Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles; praise Him, all you peoples. [SAAS]

Τῷ Σωτῆρι συνέπαθες, καὶ θανάτῳ τὸν θάνατον, ἑκουσίως ἔνδοξε μιμησάμενος, συμβασιλεύεις λαμπρότατα, πορφύραν ἐξ αἵματος, ἐνδυσάμενος φαιδράν, καὶ τῷ σκήπτρῳ τῶν ἄθλων σου, ἐγκοσμούμενος, καὶ στεφάνῳ τῆς νίκης διαπρέπων, ἀπεράντους εἰς αἰῶνας, Μεγαλομάρτυς Γεώργιε.

Voluntarily suffering * with the Savior, O holy one, * emulating His death by death through martyrdom, * you now majestically reign with Him, * attired in the radiant * purple garment dyed in blood, * and equipped with the scepter that * marks the champion’s prize, * and distinguished with laurel crowns of vict’ry * unto never ending ages, * O great and glorious Martyr George. [SD]

Ὅτι ἐκραταιώθη τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς, καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια τοῦ Κυρίου μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.

For His mercy rules over us; and the truth of the Lord endures forever. [SAAS]

Τῷ τῆς πίστεως θώρακι, καὶ ἀσπίδι τῆς χάριτος, καὶ Σταυροῦ τῷ δόρατι, συμφραξάμενος, τοῖς ἐναντίοις ἀνάλωτος, ἐγένου Γεώργιε, καὶ ὡς θεῖος ἀριστεύς, τῶν δαιμόνων τὰς φάλαγγας, τροπωσάμενος, σὺν Ἀγγέλοις χορεύεις, τοὺς πιστοὺς δέ, περιέπων ἁγιάζεις, καὶ διασῴζεις καλούμενος.

With the breastplate of pious faith * were you armed, and the shield of grace * and the spear of Christ’s cross, O holy Martyr George. * And you became thus invincible * contending against the foes. * Therefore routing demons’ ranks, * as a model of excellence, * now you celebrate * with the Angels, while caring for the faithful * whom you sanctify and rescue * when they invoke your exalted name. The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torture will ever touch them. In the eyes of the undiscerning they seemed to have died, and their departure was considered to be misfortune, and their passage from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in man’s view they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Though chastened in a few things, great kindness will be shown them, for God tested them and found them worthy of Himself. He tested them like gold in a furnace and accepted them as a whole burnt offering. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and they will run about like sparks through straw. They will judge nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord shall reign over them unto the ages. Those who trust in Him will understand truth, and the faithful shall continue with Him in love, because grace and mercy are upon His elect [and He watches over His holy ones]. [SAAS]

The righteous live forever, and their reward is with the Lord; and their care is by the Most High. Therefore they shall receive a kingly dwelling of dignity and a crown of beauty from the hand of the Lord, because He will shelter them with His right hand and protect them with His arm. He will take His zeal as His full armor and will turn His creation into weapons against His enemies. He will wear righteousness as a breastplate and put on impartial judgment as a helmet. He will take holiness as an unconquerable shield and sharpen His relentless wrath for a sword; and creation will fight with Him against the senseless. Well-aimed flashes of lightning will strike and leap to their object as from a well-drawn bow of clouds; and hailstones full of anger will be hurled as from an engine of war. The water of the sea will be vexed with them, and the rivers will wash over them severely. A powerful wind will oppose them, and like a storm it will winnow them away. Lawlessness will lay waste all the earth, and wrongdoing will overturn the thrones of rulers. Listen therefore, O kings, and understand; learn, O judges of the ends of the earth. The myrrh-bearing women at dawn very early, standing outside the tomb of the Giver-of-Life, found an Angel who was seated upon the stone. And the Angel addressed them, and this is what he said, “Why do you seek among the dead the One who is alive? Why do you grieve as though corruptible the Incorrupt? So go back and proclaim it to His Disciples.” [SD]

O brethren, let us spiritually extol that veritable diamond of endurance, George the illustrious Martyr. He was set on fire for the sake of Christ and forged by perils. Tortures trained him. Multiple martyrdoms devastated his body, which by nature was subject to decay. For love’s longing overcame nature, persuading the lover to cross over, by means of death, to the loved One, Christ our God and the Savior of our souls. [SD]
