Sinners, let us fall before * the Lord and Master in prayer, * and as once the Publican * let us present Him our sighing. * He desires that all humanity gain salvation. * And to all who are repentant He grants forgiveness. * He became a man for our sake, * though with the Father without beginning as God.

Brethren, let us all garb ourselves in lowliness, and with laments and sighs strike at our conscience, that at the judgment then, which is in perpetuity, we shall be viewed guiltless, attaining our impunity. For there we have true mitigation; to see it, let us make supplication. For there is pain and sorrow’s unseating, gone the deep sighs, there in wondrous Eden, of which Christ was fashioner, He being with the Father without beginning as God. [GKD]

John. 21:14 – 25

At that time, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. And he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go.” (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, “Follow me.” Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!” The saying spread abroad among the brethren that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. [RSV]

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression.

Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me.

Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged.

For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me.

Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom.

You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow.

You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice.

Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit.

I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness.

O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings.

A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.

Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

Then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings.

Angels and the human race cannot fully understand * what has taken place in you, Lady, virgin Mother pure.

Aged Symeon the priest, in his arms embraces You, * the Creator of the Law and the Ruler over all.

Blessed Maiden, Virgin pure, the Creator wished to save * Adam and the human race, so He dwelt inside your womb.

Come now all humanity, call the virgin Maiden blessed! * Glorify her faithfully, as the Mother of our God!

Dear believers, come and see Christ our God, the Lord of all, * in the Temple held today in the arms of Symeon.

Ἐπιβλέπεις πρὸς τὴν γῆν, καὶ ποιεῖς τρέμειν αὐτήν, καὶ πῶς γέρων κεκμηκώς, σὲ κατέχει ἐν χερσί;

Earth is made to tremble when You but look upon it, Lord. * How then can a weary, old man contain You in his arms?

For so long had Symeon lived until he saw the Christ. * Then he said to Him, “I pray, let me now depart in peace.”

Gracious Mary, you conceived in your womb the Savior Christ. * Thus you are the mystical tongs that held the burning coal.

Holy, pre-eternal God, willing You became a man. * To the Temple You were brought as a babe of forty days.

In His love for man, the Lord of the universe came down * from the heavens and was met by St. Symeon the priest.

Light for revelation of the Gentiles, You have appeared, O Lord,* even sitting upon a swift* and light cloud, the virgin Maid,* as the Sun of Justice,* and You thus completed* the shadow of the Law of old* and manifested the start of the new grace.* And therefore elder Symeon, when he beheld You, cried out and said,* From corruption release me now,* for today I have seen You, Lord. [SD]

Verse: A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel. [NKJV]

Never separated from the Father’s bosom in divinity,* and incarnated as You willed,* and held in the holy arms * of the Ever-Virgin,* You who hold all things in Your hand were given to the hands* of the divine God-receiver Symeon.* And therefore full of joy he cried to You, O Master, With my own eyes,* I Your servant have seen You, Lord;* now You let me depart in peace.

The Pharisee, who justified himself by boasting about his works, O Lord, You condemned; but You justified the Publican who was modest, and who with sighs prayed for expiation. For You do not accept boastful thoughts, but hearts that are contrite You do not despise. Therefore we, too, in humility fall down before You, who suffered for us. Grant us absolution and great mercy. [GKD]
