Ephrem, you preferred to live as a contemplative, * and always foreseeing the trial of Judgment Day, * you lamented bitterly. By your deeds, you were a teacher of the active life. * Therefore, O universal father, you ever rouse the careless to penitence. [GOASD]

Oikos.

O father, you wished to follow in the steps of the Forerunner, so you secluded yourself, away from the world, and lived in the wilderness. When the enemy saw you, the righteous one, living in this manner, he incited a brazen and shameless woman against you, thinking to conquer your manliness with the ancient weapon and to ruin your purity, so that you might no longer rouse the careless to penitence.
