God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. [SAAS]

Στίχ. αʹ. Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ.

Verse 1: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

Στίχ. βʹ. Πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐκύκλωσάν με, καὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου ἠμυνάμην αὐτούς.

Verse 2: All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.

Στίχ. γʹ. Παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν.

Verse 3: And this came about from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes.

Ταῖς τῶν δακρύων σου ῥοαῖς, τῆς ἐρήμου τὸ ἄγονον ἐγεώργησας, καὶ τοῖς ἐκ βάθους στεναγμοῖς, εἰς ἑκατὸν τοὺς πόνους ἐκαρποφόρησας, καὶ γέγονας φωστὴρ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ, λάμπων τοῖς θαύμασιν, Ἐφραὶμ πατὴρ ἡμῶν ὅσιε, πρέσβευε Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ, σωθῆναι τὰς ψυχὰς ἠμῶν.

With the rivers of your tears you made the barren desert bloom; and with your sighs from deep within, you made your labors bear their fruits a hundredfold; and you became a star, illuminating the world by your miracles, O Ephrem, our devout father. Intercede with Christ our God, for the salvation of our souls. [SD]

Τὸ ἀσάλευτον στήριγμα, τὸ τῆς πίστεως, καὶ σεβάσμιον δώρημα, τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν, τὴν Θεοτόκον ἐν ὕμνοις μεγαλύνωμεν πιστοί. Χαῖρε ἡ τὴν πέτραν τῆς ζωῆς, ἐν γαστρί σου χωρήσασα, χαῖρε τῶν περάτων ἡ ἐλπίς, θλιβομένων ἀντίληψις, χαῖρε Νύμφη ἀνύμφευτε.

O Believers, let us magnify the Theotokos in hymns. She is the unshakable support of the Faith, and the venerable gift to our souls. “Rejoice! for in your womb you contained the Rock of life. Rejoice! as the hope of all the earth, and the help of those in trouble! Rejoice, O unwedded Bride!” [SD]

Ἀναγινώσκεται τὸ οἰκεῖον Κάθισμα τοῦ Ψαλτηρίου, ἤτοι Κάθισμα 7. Μεθʼ ὃ ἡ μικρὰ Συναπτή.

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 7. Then the short litany.

Remembering our all-holy, immaculate, most blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

I think about that fearful day, and I lament my filthy deeds. How shall I argue in my own defense before the immortal King? How can I face the Judge with confidence, the prodigal that I am? O compassionate Father, only-begotten Son, and Holy Spirit, I implore, have mercy on me! [GOASD]

Στίχ. Κύριε, μὴ τῷ θυμῷ σου ἐλέγξῃς με, μηδὲ τῇ ὀργῇ σου παιδεύσῃς με.

Verse: O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, nor chasten me in Your anger.

Εἰς τὴν κοιλάδα τοῦ κλαυθμῶνος, εἰς τὸν τόπον ὃν διέθου, ὅταν καθίσῃς Ἐλεῆμον, κρίσιν δικαίαν ποιῆσαι, μὴ δημοσιεύσῃς μου τὰ κεκρυμμένα, μηδὲ καταισχύνῃς με ἐνώπιον τῶν Ἀγγέλων, ἀλλὰ φεῖσαί μου ὁ Θεός, καὶ ἐλέησόν με.

When You sit to pass righteous judgment, in the valley of weeping, in the place You appointed, O merciful Master, please do not make public the sins I committed in private, please do not embarrass me in the presence of the Angels. I beg You, spare me, O God, and have mercy on me! [GOASD]

The Son and Logos of God before the ages was begotten * of God the Father without a mother. But in these last times, * when He became incarnate from your virgin blood, * O Theotokos, you bore Him without a man. * Entreat Him to grant to us forgiveness of our sins before the end, O Lady. [GOASD]

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. Τὴν ὥραν ἀεί, προβλέπων τῆς ἐτάσεως, ἐθρήνεις πικρῶς, Ἐφραὶμ ὡς φιλήσυχος· πρακτικὸς δὲ γέγονας, ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις διδάσκαλος Ὅσιε. Ὅθεν Πάτερ παγκόσμιε, ῥαθύμους ἐγείρεις πρὸς μετάνοιαν.

Ephrem, you preferred to live as a contemplative, * and always foreseeing the trial of Judgment Day, * you lamented bitterly. By your deeds, you were a teacher of the active life. * Therefore, O universal father, you ever rouse the careless to penitence. [GOASD]

Βλέπων σε οὖν οὕτω βιοῦντα ὁ ἐχθρὸς τὸν δίκαιον, γύναιον πάνυ ἀναιδὲς κατὰ σοῦ διεγείρει, οἰόμενος διὰ τοῦ ἀρχαίου ὅπλου τὴν σὴν ἀνδρείαν καταβαλεῖν, καὶ τὴν ἁγνείαν μολύνειν σου, ἵνα μὴ ἐν τοῖς λόγοις καὶ ἔργοις σου ῥαθύμους ἐγείρῃς πρὸς μετάνοιαν.

O father, you wished to follow in the steps of the Forerunner, so you secluded yourself, away from the world, and lived in the wilderness. When the enemy saw you, the righteous one, living in this manner, he incited a brazen and shameless woman against you, thinking to conquer your manliness with the ancient weapon and to ruin your purity, so that you might no longer rouse the careless to penitence. [GOASD]

On January 28 we commemorate our devout father Ephrem the Syrian.
