When You were baptized in the River Jordan, O Lord, it was revealed that God is worshiped in Trinity. For the voice of the Father, who had begotten You, also bore witness to You, calling You “beloved Son,” and the Spirit, in the form of a dove, confirmed that what was said is true. In Your epiphany, O Christ God, You appeared and illumined the world. Glory to You! [GOASD]

Mode 2.

The memory of the just is observed with hymns of praise; for you suffices the testimony of the Lord, O Forerunner. Therefore, when for the truth you had contested, rejoicing, to those in Hades you preached the Gospel, that God was manifested in the flesh, and takes away the sin of the world, and grants to us the great mercy. Putting on a material body, the Lord was incarnate of the Virgin, in the fire immaterial of His Godhead; and He is clothed in the Jordan’s water now, for He is glorified. [GOASD]

Baptist of Christ, intercede for us.

I am immersed in the stormy waters of my passions, O Forerunner; come and save me by your intercessions. For you became a holy and most pure vessel of dispassion, since you were dedicated to the Lord from the beginning as an infant. [SD]

O all-blessed John, the Angel who stands in the presence of God joyfully announced the birth of you, the peer of angels who would become the Lord’s Forerunner and friend, to Zacharias your venerable father as he served as a priest. [SD]

O all-venerable Prophet, you were filled with the All-holy Spirit while you were being carried in your mother’s womb; and you joyfully made known the Fruit of virginity when you leapt with delight and worshiped Him. [SD]

O pure and all-blameless Virgin, the sacred temple of virginity, who conceived God the Logos in your womb, by your intercessions, save us who run to you and pray to you, and deliver us from attacks and danger. [SD]

Forerunner of the Lord, and initiate of grace, O all-acclaimed companion of the Angels, you cancelled the reproach of barrenness, and you recognized the Virgin’s divine Child, and you leapt for joy in your mother’s womb. [SD]

O Prophet who were preferred above all, you came before the Lord and prepared His ways; for, you were the lamp shining on all, and in the water you revealed Him to be the effulgence of the Father’s glory, when He appeared in a body. [SD]

Our incomprehensible God voluntarily came down to earth and became incarnate for us, as He was well pleased to do; and He who is our illumination accepted to be baptized. At that time, the Forerunner said to Him, “O Savior, I dare not touch Your head, for I see that Your are incomprehensible, O Lord. Glory to You, O Logos, for You order all things for our benefit.” [SD]

O all-venerable John, you were sent ahead by the Master, to wash with water those who were stained, and to prepare them to receive Christ, who takes away sin and drives away error with the radiance of the knowledge of God. [SD]

O blessed John, you baptized Christ in the waters of the Jordan, wherein He as Savior crushed the wickedness of the dragons that was lurking there. Entreat Him to cure me of the poison of the dragon’s bite. [SD]

O herald of Christ, you went forth, adorned with the wisdom of God. You became the voice of one crying out, which said, “Repent!” And as a Prophet you foretold of Him who said that you were the greatest of all men. [SD]

It is Jesus, the Author of life, * who has come rescinding the penalty on first-created Adam. * Being God, and having no need to be purified, * He is purified for fallen Adam in the Jordan. * He put to death the enmity, and He grants to us the peace surpassing all understanding. [GOASD]

Now when many multitudes had come to be baptized in the river Jordan by John, he stood among them, and cried out and said to them, “You disobedient brood of vipers! God the Judge and Creator of all, standing now as one of you among you, examines hearts and knows all. He holds judgment in His hand like a winnowing fork; with infinite wisdom He clears the threshing floor of the world. Ὁ φωτισμός.

Baptist of Christ, intercede for us.

O Forerunner, you were arrayed with the light of supernatural virtue, and inspired from heaven, you came to the Jordan River, and you baptized and cleansed through water those who approached you with wholehearted faith. [SD]

Baptist of Christ, intercede for us.

When it was time for you to baptize the pure and undefiled Light, you proved to be a vessel of purity; for you were chosen by Him as being greater than all men, and most honorable of the Prophets, for you were counted worthy to see the One about whom they had prophesied. [SD]

The Forerunner, who was sent before the face of the Lord, and shows men His straight paths, trembling touches the Master’s head and baptizes Him, saying, “I know no other God except for You.” [SD]

O Virgin, your Son proved to be the Son of God as well, and as God He accomplished mighty deeds by His will alone. We all therefore truly and properly call you the Theotokos, for we know no other Mother of God except for you. [SD]

As he is the voice and the lamp of the divine light, * the morning star before the Sun, the Forerunner John * now in the wilderness cries out to all, “Repent; prepare and cleanse yourselves. * Behold, among us is the Christ, who redeems the world from the pit of death.” [GOASD]

“Without change begotten of God the Father, Christ became incarnate from the Virgin, without any filth. No one is able to untie His sandal, and to grasp how the Logos is joined to us.” So teaches the Forerunner, freeing us on earth from all fallacy. [GOASD]

All the disobedient, who refuse to believe that Christ is God, He will baptize in the final fire. But in the Holy Spirit, through grace and water, He renews all those who believe and acknowledge His divinity, freeing them from sin and their trespasses. [GOASD]

Baptist of Christ, intercede for us.

O Forerunner, you the voice of the Word came forth, and you the morning star rose, and thus you clearly announced the Sun of Righteousness. [SD]

O all-blessed John, you ignored earthly cares and were rich in heavenly hopes; thus you passed your life on earth like an Angel. [SD]

We know you as the seal of the Prophets, for you stand between the Old and New Covenants. We also declare that you are the Baptist and Forerunner of Christ our Savior. [SD]

To Adam who in Eden became blind, the Sun has in Bethlehem appeared, and it opened his eyes after washing them in the waters of the Jordan. To him who was blackened and darkened before, a light has arisen that never goes out. No longer is it night for him, but always day. For his sake the Daybreak has been born. For as it was written, he hid in the cool of the day; but he found the Dawn that raises him up who had fallen at evening. He is rid of the darkness and has reached the Morn, which appeared and illumined everything. [GKD]

Synaxarion

From the Menaion.

On January 7 is the Synaxis in honor of the holy and glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John. Coinciding with this was the transfer of his all-precious and holy hand to Constantinople.

The holy new Hieromartyr Romanos of Lacedaemonia, from the town of Diminitzi, witnessed in Byzantium in the year 1695 and died by the sword.

We also commemorate the holy Neomartyr Athanasios, who was from Attaleia, but witnessed in Smyrna in the year 1700.

By the intercessions of Your Forerunner, O Christ our God, have mercy and save us. Amen.

Young and pious men were thrown into the furnace of blazing fire. * The Angel of the Lord came down to them and drove out the fiery flame * and moist whistling wind preserved them free of harm. * Being thus refreshed in the flames, they gave glory, singing in gratitude, * “O supremely praised and most exalted Lord and God of our fathers, You are blessed.” [GOASD]

Glory to You, our God, glory to You.

Standing as they do in heaven with trembling and astonishment, * now at the River Jordan the angelic powers behold with awe * the great condescension of their Lord and God. * He who has control over the waters which are above the firmament * with a body now is standing in the water, even as the God of our fathers. In Exodus we see a prefigurement of the miracle of divine and holy Baptism, when the people of Israel were baptized by Moses in the cloud and the sea. The sea represented the water and the cloud the Holy Spirit. By which purified and perfected, and we cry aloud, “O God of our fathers, You are blessed.” [GOASD]

Glory to You, our God, glory to You.

Now believers all, let us join angelic hosts and glorify Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, theologizing unceasingly. God is three consubstantial hypostases. The Trinity is one God, in whom we received perfection in baptism, and to whom we sing, “O most exalted Lord and God of our fathers, You are blessed.” [GOASD]

Mode 2. N/M (The burning bush.)

Βάτος ἐν ὄρει.

Baptist of Christ, intercede for us.

O Forerunner, after you performed the sacrament of Baptism, and accomplished the divine mysteries that were entrusted to you, you were offered like a guileless lamb in sacrifice sacramentally. Therefore we join you in unison singing: Blessed are You, the God of our Fathers. [SD]

Baptist of Christ, intercede for us.

O thrice-blessed Forerunner, you were like another Elias, for like him you displayed an immaterial way of life, and you publicly reproved kings with boldness when they transgressed. Therefore, O Prophet, we join you singing: Blessed are You, the God of our Fathers. [SD]

Glory.

O thrice-blessed Forerunner, you were greatest of all the Prophets, and you inherited the divine honor of the Apostles of Christ; in this way you are clearly shown to be the fulfillment of the Law and the first-fruit of the new grace. Therefore, O Baptist, we join you singing: Blessed are You, the God of our Fathers. [SD]

Canon for the Forerunner.

Μυστήριον παράδοξον.

Of old, the furnace in Babylon portended paradoxical mysteries, when dew was exuded; * for the River Jordan would admit the immaterial fire when its Maker, who became incarnate, was baptized in its waters. * All peoples bless Him as Lord, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [GOASD]

Glory to You, our God, glory to You.

“Fear not at all, O Baptist John,” the Redeemer called out to the Forerunner. “For now, just obey me. Approach me, for I am good by nature, kind and merciful. Heed my command and baptize me. It is for this that I condescended. All peoples bless me as Lord, and exalt me beyond measure, unto all the ages.” [GOASD]

His hand atremble, John obeyed the Master’s summons, and he extended it as he was instructed. When he laid his hand upon the head of his own Creator to baptize Him, he said to Him, “You, sanctify me, for You are my God. Uncovered at the Jordan was the presence of the Trinity, the transcendently divine nature. For the Father’s voice declared, “He who is being baptized is my Son. He is my beloved.” There, too, was the consubstantial Spirit. All peoples bless Him as Lord, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [GOASD]

On January 7 is the Synaxis in honor of the holy and glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John. Coinciding with this was the transfer of his all-precious and holy hand to Constantinople.

The holy new Hieromartyr Romanos of Lacedaemonia, from the town of Diminitzi, witnessed in Byzantium in the year 1695 and died by the sword.

We also commemorate the holy Neomartyr Athanasios, who was from Attaleia, but witnessed in Smyrna in the year 1700.

By the intercessions of Your Forerunner, O Christ our God, have mercy and save us. Amen.

So, by grace and the seal let us preserve ourselves, O faithful. The Hebrews long ago escaped destruction, when the blood was on the lintel. Now for us this sacred laver of regeneration will be a passing over and exodus to life, where we shall see the never-setting light of the Trinity. [GOASD]

Coming from the desert, the Forerunner’s voice to all points out the Word who for our sake has visited us bodily; full of joy he prepares himself to baptize Him who has arrived, the One who purifies our souls from the ancestral sin through faith in Him. [SD]

Grace and Law do clearly promote you, holy John, as intermediate, in that you seal the Law and inaugurate Grace; and the Word honored you himself above the other Prophets all. You now surpass things visible, all-venerable Forerunner. [SD]

He who demonstrated a life that emulates the incorporeal rejoices now together with angelic hosts; he is full of exultant joy as he stands beside the Master’s throne; forgiveness and salvation he requests for us and all who sing his praise. [SD]

The cognate Spirit from above testifies of Him, that He is the Most High Father’s Only-begotten Son. To Him let us cry aloud, “O Christ our God who appeared to us and saved us, glory to You!” [SD]

You emerged from a barren woman’s labor as an Angel, O Baptist, and you dwelt in the wilderness from the time you were in swaddling clothes. You were shown to be the seal of the Prophets all; for you were counted worthy to baptize in the Jordan Him whom they beheld in various ways and proclaimed enigmatically. You heard the Father’s voice from heaven bearing witness to His Sonship. And you saw the Spirit in the form of a dove showing that the voice was directed towards the One being baptized. And you, who are superior to all the Prophets, never cease interceding on our behalf, as we loyally observe your memorial. [GKD]
