Ode iii. Mode 1. As You are the only One.

Ὁ μόνος εἰδώς.

From Menaion - - -

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. [RSV]

O Andrew, not called, but on your own, * you hastened to the wellspring of eternal life, O Saint, like a thirsty deer. * And once you found it, you made it known to all. * Once you had a drink from it, you shared with the thirsty world * the waters of incorruptibility. [GOASD]

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [RSV]

O praiseworthy Andrew, you observed * the natural bonds of family and with your brother Peter shared what you found, * saying, “We found the One we were waiting for.” * Thus, though he preceded you, born before you in the flesh, * in spiritual knowledge you preceded him. [GOASD]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

Apostle, with preaching as a net, * you caught the people, as if fish, out of the deepest sea of idolatry. * And like a pure entrée you presented them, * glazed with grace divine of Him who appeared in human flesh * in the world, to the banquet of Christ on high. [GOASD]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

Theotokion.

O Virgin, you remained unconsumed, * conceiving God within your womb by the all-holy Spirit’s overshadowing. * To Prophet Moses, the giver of the Law, * the unconsumed burning bush that he saw foreshadowed you, * who would receive in yourself the unbearable fire. [SD]

Canon 1 for the Apostle.

From Menaion - - -

Ode vi. Mode 1. The lowest depth encircles us.

Ἐκύκλωσεν ἡμᾶς.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

All-blessed Andrew, you traversed the present life * as if it were a stormy sea, * with your body as your vessel; and you found * Christ, who is in control of everything, * to be your pilot; and rejoicing, you made your way to Him. [GOASD]

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

O Andrew, by the grace that God has given you, * by word alone you exorcise * unclean spirits, and you make diseases all * depart from the sick and also drive away * the swarming illnesses of body and soul afflicting us. [GOASD]

Glory.

O blessed Andrew, you were like a tranquil wave, * propelled as by a gentle wind, * the Holy Spirit; and by His streams you dried * the wicked oceans of polytheism; * and then you poured out rivers of the knowledge of God to all. [GOASD]

Both now. Theotokion.

Humanity’s progenitors now celebrate * because of you, O Virgin pure; * for through you they have regained Eden’s delights, * which they lost because of disobedience. * You are a virgin after childbirth, as you were before. [GOASD]

The Epistle

For the Apostle.

Prokeimenon. Mode pl. 4. Psalm 18.

His proclamation went forth into all the earth. [SAAS]

Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God. [SAAS]

The reading is from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians.

1 Cor. 4:9 – 16

Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me. [RSV]

Alleluia. Mode 1. Psalm 88.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Verse 1: The heavens shall confess Your wonders, O Lord. [SAAS]

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Verse 2: God is glorified in the counsel of saints.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Gospel

For the Apostle.

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to John.

Jn. 1:35 – 52

At that time, John was standing with two of his disciples; and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “So you are Simon the son of Jonah? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Communion Hymn. Psalm 18.

His proclamation went forth into all the earth, and his words to the ends of the world. Alleluia. [SAAS]

Hymn after Holy Communion.

Mode 2.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

DISMISSAL

Glory to You, O Christ our God. Glory to You.
