Both now. Theotokion.

Mode 3.

The Prophets proclaimed it beforehand, and the Apostles taught it; the Martyrs confessed it, and we have believed it: that you gave birth to God indeed, O Theotokos. And therefore we magnify your childbirth, which is ineffable. [SD]

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 13. Then the short litany.

For the Apostles.

Mode 3. You were so beautiful.

Τὴν ὡραιότητα.

You made the memory of Your Apostles all * a splendid feast that shines with glowing light and joy. * Being almighty, You enabled them to imitate Your Passion, O Lord. * Valiantly they overcame the devil’s might and defeated him. * Henceforth they received the grace * of miraculous healing and cures. * Accept their prayers for us, and to Your people * grant peace, O benevolent God. [GOASD]

Verse: Their proclamation went forth into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.

Mode 3. Your confession.

Θείας πίστεως.

The Apostles went and irrigated * all the earth with streams of God the Logos; * and the Faith sprouted forth like an ear of grain; * and the entire world became filled with it; * for they cut down all the weeds of idolatry. * They presented many people to Christ our God, * baptizing them in the uncreated Trinity. [GOASD]

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Mode 3. You were so beautiful.

Τὴν ὡραιότητα.

Bringing to mind how rich is your immeasurable * concern and sympathy, and the invincible * power and might that you possess, * O Lady, I have run to you * under your protective veil. * In distress I am suffering, * and I am beside myself; * from the depths of my heart I weep * and cry to you, O Virgin Theotokos: * Save me, your unworthy servant, save me, I pray. [GOASD]

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 14. There is no litany, but immediately the following:

Mode 3. Your confession.

Θείας πίστεως.

Come all people let us with divine hymns * sing in praise of the holy Apostles. * For they sank the deceit of idolatry, * and led humanity back to the light of God, * and taught the world to believe in the Trinity. * Let us honor and extol them today most piously * and thereby glorify Christ our Lord and God. [SD]

Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament shows the creation of His hands.

Mode 3. Your confession.

Θείας πίστεως.

The illustrious holy Apostles, * who saw God, shone forth in works promoting * Orthodoxy and extinguished the errant deceit * of false religion, enriching the whole wide world * with true religion, adorning the churches with cheer. * Now to Christ God they earnestly pray He grant * His peace and great mercy to all who believe. [GOASD]

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Mode 3. Your confession.

Θείας πίστεως.

I am drowning in the sea of passions. * I rely on your ocean of mercy * and implore you, Theotokos, to help me please. * O all-immaculate Virgin, extend your hand * save me your servant as your Son rescued Peter of old. * Have mercy on my soul that is sinking * beneath the billow of my many sins. [GOASD]

READER

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. [SAAS]

Mode pl. 4. O Planter of creation.

Ὡς ἀπαρχάς.

Saint Philip, Your disciple and Your friend and imitator of Your Passion, proclaimed to the whole world that You are God. At his earnest entreaties, keep Your Church from assaults of lawless enemies, through the Theotokos, O Lord abundantly merciful. [SD]

Oikos.

Give me a river of speech, O Lord, who made the nature of water. Steady my heart, O Master, who established the earth by Your word. And illumine my mind, You who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, so that I may say what is fitting, and worthily extol your Disciple, O Lord abundantly merciful. [SD]

From the Menaion.

On November 14, we commemorate the holy, glorious and all-lauded Apostle Philip, one of the first group of Twelve.

On this day we also commemorate our father among the saints Gregory Palamas, the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Thessaloniki, who flourished around 1340.

On this day the holy Neo-martyr Constantine, who was born in Hydra, but witnesed in Rhodes in the year 1800, died by hanging.

By their holy intercessions, O God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Νόμων πατρῴων.

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

Braving all danger for their ancestral Laws, the blessed young men in Babylon spat disdainfully upon the king’s unreasonable decree; and being joined to the fire, by which they were not consumed, they sang a hymn worthy of God the Ruler: “Sing a hymn to the Lord, all you works, and exalt Him beyond measure unto all the ages.” [SD]

Stand for the singing of Ode ix.

Let us honor and magnify in song the Theotokos and the Mother of the light.

Heirmos. Mode pl. 2.

Ἀπορεῖ πᾶσα γλῶσσα.

Every tongue is dumbfounded to extol as is worthy; * a super-mundane mind is dizzied praising you with hymns, O Theotokos. * Nonetheless accept our faith, since you are full of goodness, * for you have seen our longing indeed inspired by God. * Lady, as the protectress of Christians, you do we magnify. [SD]

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. Greater in honor than the Cherubim, and in glory greater beyond compare than the Seraphim; you without corruption gave birth to God the Word, and are truly Theotokos. You do we magnify. [GOASD]

Your cheeks were like bowls of sweet beverage in the world, O wise Apostle Philip. To the faithful they offered the life-giving drink. You had the active life as an entry to contemplation, and you became a follower of Christ. By your teachings, you adorned the barren and childless Church of the Gentiles, which in Christ has produced many offspring. Pray now for that Church to be delivered from distress and need. For you are able to do much, since you are near to God. [SD]
