Psalm 103 (104). |
Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, You are magnified exceedingly; You clothe Yourself with thanksgiving and majesty, who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, who stretch out the heavens like a curtain; You are He who covers His upper chambers with water, who makes the clouds His means of approach, who walks on the wings of the winds, who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire. He established the earth on its stable foundation; it shall not be moved unto ages of ages. The deep like a garment is His covering; the waters shall stand upon the mountains; at Your rebuke they shall flee; at the sound of Your thunder, they shall be afraid. The mountains rise up, and the plains sink down to the place You founded for them. You set a boundary they shall not pass over; neither shall they return to cover the earth. You are He who sends springs into the valley; the waters shall pass between the mountains; they shall give drink to all the wild animals of the field; the wild asses shall quench their thirst; the birds of heaven shall dwell beside them; they shall sing from the midst of the rocks. You are He who waters the mountains from His higher places; the earth shall be satisfied with the fruit of Your works. You are He who causes grass to grow for the cattle, and the green plant for the service of man, to bring forth bread from the earth; and wine gladdens the heart of man, to brighten his face with oil; and bread strengthens man’s heart. The trees of the plain shall be full of fruit, the cedars of Lebanon, which You planted; there the sparrows shall make their nests; the house of the heron takes the lead among them. The high mountains are for the deer; the cliff is a refuge for the rabbits. He made the moon for seasons; the sun knows its setting. You established darkness, and it was night, wherein all the wild animals of the forest will prowl about; the young lions roar and snatch their prey, and seek their food from God. The sun arises, and they are gathered together; and they shall be put to bed in their dens. Man shall go out to his work and to his labor until evening. O Lord, Your works shall be magnified greatly; You made all things in wisdom; the earth was filled with Your creation. There is this great and spacious sea: the creeping things are there without number; the living things are there, both small and great; there the ships pass through; there is this dragon You formed to play therein. All things wait upon You, that You may give them food in due season. When You give it to them, they shall gather it; when You open Your hand, all things shall be filled with Your goodness. But when You turn Your face away, they shall be troubled; when You take away their breath, they shall die and return again to their dust. You shall send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth. Let the glory of the Lord be forever; the Lord shall be glad in His works; He looks upon the earth and makes it tremble; He touches the mountains, and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing to my God as long as I exist; may my words be pleasing to Him, and I shall be glad in the Lord. May sinners cease from the earth, and the lawless, so as to be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul. |

Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth, a door of enclosure about my lips. |
Incline not my heart to evil words, to make excuses in sins. |
With men who work lawlessness; and I will not join with their choice ones. |
The righteous man shall correct me with mercy, and he shall reprove me; but let not the oil of the sinner anoint my head. |
For my prayer shall be intense in the presence of their pleasures. Their judges are swallowed up by the rock. |
They shall hear my words, for they are pleasant. As a clod of ground is dashed to pieces on the earth, so their bones were scattered beside the grave. |
For my eyes, O Lord, O Lord, are toward You; in You I hope; take not my soul away. |
Keep me from the snares they set for me, and from the stumbling blocks of those who work lawlessness. |
Sinners shall fall into their own net; I am alone, until I escape. |
I cried to the Lord with my voice, with my voice I prayed to the Lord. |
I shall pour out my supplication before Him; I shall declare my affliction in His presence. |
When my spirit fainted within me, then You knew my paths. |
For on the way I was going, they hid a trap for me. |
I looked on my right, and saw there was no one who knew me. |
Refuge failed me, and there was no one who cared for my soul. |
I cried to You, O Lord; I said, “You are my hope, my portion in the land of the living.” |
Attend to my supplication, for I was humbled exceedingly. |
Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than I. |
Bring my soul out of prison to give thanks to Your name, O Lord. |
The righteous shall wait for me, until You reward me. |
Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. |

If You, O Lord, should mark transgression, O Lord, who would stand? For there is forgiveness with You. [SAAS] |
Contemplation being reached by means of virtue in action, * you set contemplation as * the goal of your actions done for the love of God. * Hence you asked Christ the show * you the Father’s glory * which is truly indescribable. * Indeed, O glorious * Philip, every rational being longs * for God who had created it. * Forthwith You were granted to see the One * for whom you were longing, accepting as His stamp His only Son. * And now implore Him with confidence * for our souls unceasingly. |
You continually had divine ascents, O Apostle, * much like Moses long before, * and you likewise longed to have a vision of God. * You indeed clearly saw * His authentic image * and accepted His identity. * For since the essence of the Son and the Father is known as one, * the Son is the immediate * knowledge of the Father, revealing Him; * and in every manner the oneness and identity is shown, * the kingdom, power and glory, and worship of the one true God. [GOASD] |

You became the instrument of God the all-holy Spirit, * who inspired and guided you * to proclaim the word of God, as if strumming you. * In the world echoing the supernal Gospel * of the Savior, with the fiery tongue * that animated you, you incinerated the flammable * deception of idolatry, * which withered like grass that is burned in fire. * O Apostle Philip, you preached throughout the world that Jesus Christ * is Lord of all and the Son of God, the King of the universe. We entreat you who are the voice * of the Logos, O Gregory, * the breath of the Spirit, the inexhaustible * fiery tongue of theology * that by grace did splendidly * burn to ashes the profane * and the blasphemous substance of * all the heresies. * From the insolence of opposing doctrines, by your prayers, do deliver * those now extolling you piously. [SD] |

For His mercy rules over us; and the truth of the Lord endures forever. [SAAS] |
When you first had shone brightly as * an ascetic and hesychast * and had with the Spirit beheld the Scriptures’ depth, * which is not easy to apprehend, * then Christ set you splendidly * on the lamp stand of the Church. * And from there, you O Gregory, * with your sacred words * and the power of miracles bedazzled the entire world, O father, * and the unstable you stabilized. The remembrance of the righteous is with eulogies; the blessing of the Lord is upon the head of a righteous man. Blessed is a man who finds wisdom, and a mortal who sees discernment; for the profits gained from wisdom are better than the treasures of gold and silver. Wisdom is more valuable than precious stones, and nothing evil will withstand her. She is well known to all who come near her, and no honor is worthy of her. Righteousness proceeds from her mouth, and she carries law and mercy upon her tongue. Now therefore, my son, hear me: Blessed is the man who shall hearken to me and the man who shall guard my ways; for my issues are the issues of life, and grace is prepared from the Lord. You, O men, I exhort, and I utter my voice to the sons of men. I, wisdom, dwell with counsel, and I call upon knowledge and understanding. Counsel and safety are mine; discernment is mine, and strength is mine. I love those who love me, and those who seek me shall find me. Understand astuteness, O simple ones, and put it in your heart, O uninstructed ones. Obey me, for I speak sacred things, and from my lips I will bring forth things that are true. For my mouth shall speak the truth, but false lips are an abomination before me. All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; there is nothing in them crooked or twisted. All things are evident to those who understand and true to those who find knowledge. Therefore, I teach you a true word and good knowledge to be obeyed, that you might answer words of truth to those who question you, that your hope might be in the Lord, and the one who guards it will be filled with the Spirit. |
The mouth of a righteous man distills wisdom; the lips of righteous men distill grace, but the mouth of the humble meditates on wisdom. The righteousness of upright men delivers them. When a righteous man dies, his hope does not perish. A righteous son is begotten unto life; a good man eats from the fruits of righteousness. Light is with the righteous continually, and they will find grace and glory from the Lord. The tongue of the wise understands good things. There is wisdom in the good heart of a man. The Lord loves holy hearts, and all the blameless are acceptable to Him. Wisdom is radiant and unfading; she comes upon those who long to know her beforehand, and is easily perceived by those who love her. He who rises early in the morning to seek her will not grow weary, and he who keeps watch for her will soon be free from worry; because she goes about seeking those worthy of her, and she appears to them favorably in their paths. Evil cannot overcome wisdom. I became a lover of her beauty, I loved her and sought her from my youth, and desired to take her as a bride for myself. The Master of all loves her. For she is the initiate of the knowledge of God and one who chooses His works. The products of righteousness are the virtues. For wisdom teaches self-control, discernment, righteousness and courage, concerning which things there is nothing more valuable in the life of man. But also, if anyone longs for great experience, she knows the things of old and portrays the things to come; she understands subtlety of words and the solution of riddles; she has foreknowledge of signs and wonders and the outcomes of times and seasons. And to all she is a good counselor. In kinship with wisdom there is immortality, and in the fellowship of her words there is good repute. So I entreated the Lord and besought Him, and with all my heart, I said: “O God of our fathers and the Lord of mercy, who made all things by Your word and in Your wisdom built a man, that by You He might be the master of what is created, and manage the world in holiness and righteousness, give me the wisdom that sits by Your throne, and do not reject me from among Your servants; because I am Your servant and the son of Your maidservant. Send her forth from Your holy heavens, and send her from Your glorious throne, that she might be present with me and labor and that I might know what is well-pleasing to You. For she knows and understands all things, and she will guide me wisely in my actions and guard me with her glory. For the reasoning of mortals is cowardly, and our intents are unsafe. [SAAS] |

When the righteous are praised, the people shall rejoice, for immortality is in its memory because it is known both by God and by man. For his soul was pleasing to the Lord. Therefore long for my words; yearn for them, and you will be instructed. Now this love is the keeping of her laws. Honor wisdom, that you may reign forever, and I will hide no mysteries from you; for He is also the guide of wisdom and the corrector of the wise. For both we and our words are in His hand. For wisdom, the artisan of all things, taught me. So in herself, wisdom is a spirit that is rational, holy, for she is the radiance of eternal light, a spotless mirror of the operative power of God and the image of His goodness, and makes holy souls friends of God and prophets. For wisdom is more beautiful than the sun and more than every constellation of stars. Compared with light she is found to be superior. Wisdom rescued from troubles those who served her. She guided a righteous man on straight paths and gave him knowledge of holy things. She protected him from his enemies, kept him safe from those who plotted against him, and arbitrated a strong contest for him, so he might know that godliness is more powerful than anything, but evil cannot overcome wisdom. Nor will justice, when it cross-examines, pass him by. For they said among themselves, as they reasoned incorrectly: Let us oppress the righteous poor man; let us not spare a widow, nor respect the aged gray hair of an old man. Let our might be our law of righteousness. Let us lie in ambush for the righteous man, because he is useless to us and opposes our deeds and accuses us of sins against our upbringing. He claims to have knowledge of God, and he calls himself a child of the Lord. He has become for us as a refutation of our purposes; even seeing him is a burden to us, because his life is unlike that of others; for his paths go in a different direction. We are considered by him as a hybrid, and he avoids our ways as something immoral. He considers the last things of the righteous as blessed. Let us see if his words are true, and let us put these last things to the test at the end of his life. Let us test him with insult and torture that we may know his gentleness and test his patient endurance. Let us condemn him to a shameful death, for there shall be a visitation because of his words. So they reasoned these things and were led astray, for their malice blinded them. But they did not know the mysteries of God, who has authority over life and death, who forgives sins and saves in time of affliction, the One who saves from every evil, because the Lord is compassionate and merciful. The Lord opposes the arrogant, but He gives grace to the humble. [SAAS] |

Lord our God, who inclined the heavens and came down for the salvation of humankind, look upon Your servants and Your inheritance; for they have bowed their heads and bent their necks to You, the fearsome yet compassionate Judge, not expecting human help, but awaiting Your mercy and anticipating Your salvation. Guard them at all times, this evening and the coming night, from every enemy, from all demonic activity against them, from unprofitable reflections, and from wicked thoughts. |

What an amazing phenomenon! He who had previously * used a net, as a fisherman, * was chosen by God to be an Apostle and fisher of men. * He hauled in Gentiles with words instead of nets, * and caught the world with the Cross instead of hooks. * Great was the human catch * that through holy baptism he brought to Christ. * And today we celebrate his sacred memory. [GOASD] |
Verse: His proclamation went forth into all the earth, and his words to the ends of the world. [SAAS] |
What an amazing accomplishment! Philip was sent out by God * as a sheep in the midst of wolves, * and, behold, into the world the Apostle went fearlessly. * Converting beasts into lambs when they believed, * by divine grace he transformed society. * Great and ineffable * are the works and miracles he did by faith. * Through his prayers save our souls, only compassionate Lord. Rejoice, the straight and accurate rule * of Orthodoxy, the ocean of theology. * The Trinity’s single nature * did you distinctly proclaim, * and the simple Godhead, single in its will * and single in energy, uncreated, omnipotent. * You put to shame those who rejected the Sprit’s grace * and the timeless deification, O blessed one. * Mouth of the theologians, holy hierarch Gregory, * and the divine fathers’ glory and their companion and seconder; * the Church’s bright beacon: * through your intercessions freely great mercy is bestowed.
