The Readings from the Regular Cycle

The Epistle

Monday of the 20th Week

The reading is from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians.

Phil. 2:12 – 16

Brethren, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud. [RSV]

The Gospel

Monday of the 8th Week of Luke

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

Lk. 12:13 – 15, 22 – 31

At that time, while Jesus was teaching, one of the multitude said to him, “Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or divider over you?” And he said to them, “Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat, nor about your body, what you shall put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his stature? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O men of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be of anxious mind. For all the nations of the world seek these things; and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek God's kingdom, and these things shall be yours as well.” [RSV]

The Readings for the Commemoration

The Epistle

For the Devout Man.

The reading is from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians.

2 Cor. 9:6 – 11

Brethren, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, “He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever.” He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. [RSV]

Synaxarion

From the Menaion.

On November 4, we commemorate our devout father Ioannikios the Great, of Mt. Olympus.

On this day we also commemorate the holy hieromartyrs Nikandros, Bishop of Myra, and Hermaios the Priest, who were ordained by the holy Apostle Titus.

On this day we also commemorate the holy martyr Porphyrios.

On this day we relate a story about the Prophet Jeremiah’s Lamentation over Jerusalem, and its fall, and about Abimelech’s ecstasy.

We also commemorate the Orthodox emperor St. John Vatatzes the Merciful King.

By the intercessions of Your Saints, O God, have mercy on us.
