Τοὺς σοὺς ὑμνολόγους.

From Menaion - - -

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. [RSV]

You bathed in the vivifying waters of Baptism, whereby you were cleansed; * and then again, Demetrius, you bathed in blood of martyrdom. * Combining both, you thus became a novel spring of most fragrant myrrh. [GOASD]

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [RSV]

The torrents of fragrant myrrh now gladden, as once did the river of the Lord, * your city, O Demetrius, the guard of Thessalonica. * You sanctify everything, like tabernacles of the Most High God. [GOASD]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

O Martyr Demetrius, your city is known for the vivifying spring * of fragrant myrrh that gushes forth like rivers and that inundates * the passions and the heresies, that would engulf us if not for you. [GOASD]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

Theotokion.

Behold, Virgin Mary is addressing the Bridegroom and Master of the world. * “My Son, you are so beautiful, lovely indeed, and beautiful. * I joyfully run after You, for the smell of Your fragrant myrrh.” [GOASD]

Canon 2 for the Saint.

From Menaion - - -

Ode vi. Mode 4. O godly-minded believers.

Τὴν θείαν ταύτην.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

O Saint, you washed in the sacred bath * of Baptism, and you were anointed with the Holy Spirit’s myrrh, * which was preserved undefiled in you * and made the blood that flowed from your side become like myrrh. [GOASD]

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

The Lord and Bridegroom invites the soul * of Martyr St. Demetrius, saying, “My companion, rise and come, * and let us enter the house of nard; * and there we shall enjoy the sweet fragrance of My myrrh.” [GOASD]

Glory.

The Bridegroom Christ, O Demetrius, * calls out to you, “Behold, I make all things new. The winter storm has passed. * Come now, the roses have blossomed forth, * and run after the smell of my ointments, as My friend.” [GOASD]

Both now. Theotokion.

The laws of nature were overturned * by your unusual childbirth, O Virgin: death is overcome by death, * and life arose from the sepulcher, * and blood of holy Martyrs becomes most fragrant myrrh. [GOASD]

The Epistle

For the Martyr.

Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 63.

The righteous man shall be glad in the Lord. [SAAS]

Verse: Hear my voice, O God. [SAAS]

The reading is from Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy.

2 Tim. 2:1 – 10

Timothy, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel, the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the word of God is not fettered. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory. [RSV]

Alleluia. Mode 4. Psalm 91.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Verse 1: The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree. [SAAS]

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Verse 2: Those planted in the house of the Lord.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Gospel

For the Martyr.

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to John.

Jn. 15:17 – 16:2

The Lord said to his disciples, “This I command you, to love one another. If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. It is to fulfill the word that is written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’ But when the Comforter comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning. I have said all this to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.” [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Communion Hymn. Psalm 111/112.

The righteous will be remembered for ever. Alleluia. [RSV]

Hymn after Holy Communion.

Mode 2.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

DISMISSAL

Glory to You, O Christ our God. Glory to You.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, the holy and glorious Great-martyr Demetrius, the Myrrh-streamer, whose memory we celebrate; and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
