Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, You are magnified exceedingly; You clothe Yourself with thanksgiving and majesty, who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, who stretch out the heavens like a curtain; You are He who covers His upper chambers with water, who makes the clouds His means of approach, who walks on the wings of the winds, who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire. He established the earth on its stable foundation; it shall not be moved unto ages of ages. The deep like a garment is His covering; the waters shall stand upon the mountains; at Your rebuke they shall flee; at the sound of Your thunder, they shall be afraid. As you watched the victorious Martyrs, you, O Varys, were filled with divine courage; and you ran into the stadium, and you proclaimed Christ, who became man for us. You did not fear death nor the imminent tortures. Thus, as you were tormented and mercilessly slashed, you rejoiced with a perfect frame of mind, O wise Saint, for you looked ahead to the lasting glory that awaits those who long for God. [SD]

Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles; praise Him, all you peoples. [SAAS]

You saw your own flesh and blood spilling on the ground, and you behaved as if it were happening to someone else, O most courageous Athlete. O Theotokos, you became a mother in a manner passing nature. You remained a virgin in a manner passing speech and thought, and no language is capable of explaining the marvel of your childbirth. In the beginning, when You fashioned man in Your image and likeness, You put him in Paradise to have dominion over Your creation. But by the envy of the devil, man was deceived; and he ate the fruit and thus became a transgressor of Your commandments. Therefore, O Lord, You sentenced him to return to the earth, from which he had been taken, and to pray for repose. [SD]
