Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

You have glorified the Prophets and the Teachers, * the Devout and the Just, O benevolent * and gracious Lord. By their entreaties, save us all. [SD]

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

Holy Martyrs, you did not succumb to fire, * sword, and combing, nor even to wild beasts, * glorious athletes, and you obtained eternal life. [SD]

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Place the souls of those whom You, O Logos, transferred * from this temporal life, there with all the Saints * and Righteous, so that we may glorify You, O Lord. [SD]

Apolytikion. For the Martyrs.

Mode pl. 1. As the Father and Spirit.

All the hosts in the heavens were utterly amazed * by the feats and the contests the holy Martyrs won. * For by the power of the Cross, they competed very well; * they invisibly defeated the bodiless foe, * while in their own mortal bodies. * Now they intercede with the Master, * that He be merciful to our souls. [SD]

The Apolytikion of the parish church is sung. Then:

Ὡς ἀπαρχάς.

O Planter of creation, Lord, to You does the entire world bring as an offering the God-bearing martyr Saints, as being nature’s first fruits. At their earnest entreaties, keep Your Church in a state of profoundest peace, through the Theotokos, O Lord abundantly merciful. [SD]

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3)

Be glad in the Lord and rejoice greatly. [SAAS]

Verse: Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. [SAAS]

The reading is from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians.

1 Cor. 10:23 – 28

Brethren, “all things are permitted for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are permitted for me,” but not all things build up. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. For “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. (But if some one says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then out of consideration for the man who informed you, and for conscience’ sake do not eat it.) For “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” [RSV]

The Gospel

Saturday of the 4th Week of Luke

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

Lk. 6:1 – 10

At that time, Jesus was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath?” And Jesus answered, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” And he said to them, “The Son of man is lord of the sabbath.” On another sabbath, when he entered the synagogue and taught, a man was there whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” And he looked around on them all, and said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

Mode 2.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

Glory to You, O Christ our God. Glory to You.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, the holy Martyrs Probus, Tarachus, and Andronicus, whose memory we observe, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
