The unlawful edict was issued to all the ends of the earth, to offer sacrifices and libations to idols, and to decorate altars and temples of demons, which would be the destruction of humanity. Then those famous and lovely virgin girls shone like stars and dispelled the darkness of ungodliness and ignorance. They kindled the light of true faith in God in the hearts of the faithful, they publicly cried out, “Greatest is the God, who was crucified of His own will and who rose on the third day! He is the One we boast of. Therefore, they obtained an incorruptible crown, from Christ who is Lord of all. [SD]

We intend that no one should blame us about this liberal gift which we are administering, for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of men. Now it is superfluous for me to write to you about the offering for the saints, for I know your readiness of which I boast about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready since last year; and your zeal has stirred up most of them. But I have sent the brethren so that our boasting about you may not prove vain in this case, so that you may be ready, as I said you would be; lest if some Macedonians come with me and find that you are not ready, we be humiliated — to say nothing of you — for being so confident.
